A Toaster As A Graduation Gift For Her???? |
| |
| I was browsing around on Kmart.com and found the most interesting thing. Under "Graduation Gifts For Her," I found three toasters and a mini size refrigerator. I was totally shocked. How many women would be offended if they recieved these kind of gifts for graduation. I am confident that the men on Mylot would know better than to purchase such gifts for the women in their lives, right? For myself, I would prefer jewelry or something personal like that. But please do not give me a household appliance for a gift. I would not even want a household appliance on mothers day. These are days to make me feel special. Not days to contribute to the needs of the household. What do you guys think? http://www.kmart.com/shc/... | | | | | |

| | Well, I must disagree a bit with you because if I was graduating High School and moving into a dorm in college I would GREATLY appreciate a toaster, and a minifridge and other of those items. They are very expensive and Lord knows that money is not something you have when you are a college freshman. | | | | | | |

| | But should they be gender pecific? I think it's the old sexit stereotype that's bugging people here. Isn't a toaster or mini fridge as good a gift for HIM as it is for HER? | | | |

| | You guys are funny, but not that funny, show me the money. Then I can buy my own stuff. I have yet to see a toaster in a college dorm. But then again, I don't watch very much television. | | | |

| | These are great gifts! Whether the graduate is going on to college or graduate school they probably will be on their own. Having your own fridge and toaster and other stuff is right on point when you are just starting out on your own. | | | | | | |

| | They are perfect gifts for any girl that will be continuing her education. Lot's of times people do not think of practical gifts to give, and if she is not going to college, one day she will be on her own and would appreciate gifts like those. | | | | | | |

| | But Rozie if one were moving to college, away for the first time, this would be something that one would really need. College kids can afford bread and peanut butter most of the time, and having it on toast might just be a HUGE treat!! And of course a mini fridge for all that corona... I can here it now My youngest is in college and he has told me, after the fact of course, how him and his friends lived off of Ramen noodles and peanut butter for a week cause they spent all their money on beer or a toga party or something crazy like that. Not that I condone this behavior or anything, but I'm not there. He told me recently that my old saying has rang true for him... "If your gonna be dumb, you better be tough!" He's calmed down much and is about 6 months away from graduating, thank God! Sorry for rambling, guess I'm just in the "kids in college" era of parenting life! So to answer you, I don't think they are bad graduation gifts for her! | | | | | | |

| | A toaster to me, is one of those things that you should miss about him. I do not think that I would want the messy crumbs of a toaster to further complicate college life for me. Fresh bread is a lot easier to handle and a lot less time consuming to prepare. College kids appreciate quick and simply. I am glad to know that your son has calmed down and is more focused. I understand how their first time away from home and not under the watchful eye of their parents can cause them to go a little wild. But eventually most of them get back on track and finish sucessfully. I like your saying about being tough if you are dumb. I have always attempted to do the smart thing, because I suck at being tough. Congratulations on your son doing a fine job. | | | |

| | It would depend on if the girl was planning on going to college, then the gifts might come in handy. Also if the girl was getting her own apartment, that would be a nice gift. My hubby felt like you do, household stuff was not a gift. Gifts were personel things. I would be happy with new appliances for a gift, but jewelry from your hubby or boyfriend does make you feel more special. | | | | | | |

| | I would think that a toaster would be far too messy for a college dorm. But I have never lived in one so I do not know how things work. I know as far as a school and being on time, I would want to keep it simple and fast and waiting for a toaster to pop up just doesn't play in to that. | | | |

| | I can't beliee all he sexit assumptions tha can go along with those gits. I guess I won't be shopping at KMar anymoe. Not to worry since they're no longe in Canada, and haven't been or years. If my husband ought me a oaser as a special gift for a special occasion, I'd shove his left foot in it!! LOL Why do there need to be different gifts for her and fo him anyway? I can't think of one thing I'd ever wan that a man wouldn't enjoy oo. | | | | | | |

| | I totally agree with what you are saying. Another thing that seems to have bothered me is the fact that the only gifts they had listed for a girls graduation was a toaster in three different colors and a mini frig. The list of gifts for women for any occasion should be the longest list of all. There are so many special things that we enjoy. | | | |

| | Awwww, that is so not fair, but it is true and therefore extremely funny. More fathers do not to teach this to their sons. I believe the world would run so much smoother if they did. I remember when I was in my early teens, my uncle gave my aunt a "Lakers," basketball for mother's day. He had been bugging her about losing weight. That still tops the list as the worst gift ever to me. But as the article stated, men give gifts that they feel will be useful. Then one Christmas when we were planning to move and my aunt was going to rent out the house that we were in, he did not give her a gift at all that Christmas. He told her that the bars that he had put on the house a few months ago, had been her Christmas gift. She ran home to her mother and for the first few days in the new house, she was not there. But somehow he made their relationship work. They were married for 27 years. He passed away this May and they were still very much in love. | | | |

| | I think some people might be thinking of getting a gift for a kid who is going to college and living in a dorm. I know I have actually asked for a toaster for a birthday or Christmas present when I didn't have one and needed one. So, it didn't offend me. But, I wouldn't have wanted it otherwise. I think it's good to give appliances out if the person asks for it, but not out of the blue. It might make a good wedding gift for a young couple just starting a home together, or a housewarming gift. | | | | | | |

| | Exactly, a wedding or housewarming gift is perfect. It also bothered me that they only offered appliances and only two little cheap ones at that. We women are so much more than that. | | | |

| | Well I suppose these small appliances would be appropriate for a girl that is moving to a place of her own ... to a dorm or her own apartment. I remember I wanted to get my niece a nice graduation present after she graduated from high school. She was going off to college in another city and was getting her own apartment. I asked her mom what she would like and she said she needed to furnish her apartment. I didn't specifically know what she needed and I didn't want to duplicate anything so I gave her a giftcard to Target. This same niece is graduating from college next week and landed a wonderful job ... this time I got her a designer laptop/briefcase that I hope she will enjoy for her new career! | | | | | | |

| | I'm guessing that it would depend on the person and their wants and needs. Some women have Hope Chests in which they buy a few household items every week/month/year for a loved one's Hope Chest so that when they grow up they'll not be needing so much because it was bought through a period of time such as sheets, bath towels and wash rags, dish cloths and towels, blankets and so on. But if this person didn't put it on their wish list then heck no! I wouldn't buy that for them as a gift! It would be very insulting. But then again, it could be for a college dorm use too so who's to say? I'd have to ask the person who's recieving the gifts a few questions without their knowledge of why I'm asking before I bought anything just to be sure. | | | | | | |
