The Cost of Living Too High?  email this discussion to a friend?

The cost of living has become outrageously high. Food and gas prices continue to soar as the job market shrinks and shrinks the working middle class with it. Even more frustrating is when people holding two to three jobs can't pay off their mortgage. This growing frustration is felt everywhere as employers judge a potential employee from a piece of paper or a computer record before meeting him or her in person. Yet the deciding factor is the person applying for the job. In fact it seems as the middle man, you and me, gets replaced by a computer, our resources dwindle as well.

The other day I called a supposed Human Resources department to ask about jobs. The lady told me she can't share this information with me over the phone, even though it is public. In fact she outright refused to share it with me. My reaction? I was miffed. After all she and the Human Resources department are the resources, right? Bye-bye middle man or woman. Now maybe it is just me, but I felt there was little point in the lady being there to answer the phone if she isn't going to perform her job function. Few employers consider this a possible source of difficulty for the working man and woman trying to feed their family and not end up on the streets. The conflict is people need jobs and the economy needs services to function, even as more employers go the route of computers. People are better equipped to share resources simply for the fact they have been there.

One way to minimize the cost of living is going to stores like Aldis that actually offer the same or more for less money. General Dollar Stores can also come in handy, as some of them carry food, too. A consumer like you and me can buy twice as much for half the amount spent at corporate stores like Walmart. If a person is down and out, go to the local food pantries. They can be found at the Salvation Army and the churches. We all need to eat to live, so there's no shame in using the resources available.

I have also had to use Com Ed's budget billing program and a liheap grant to make it through the very cold winters around here. The budget billing program helps the consumer by mediating and distributing a big heating bill over the span of a few billing cycles. This lowers the immediate cost and the person doesn't develop hypothermia from the cold. However what doesn't lower the immediate costs of living are the rising prices of resources like oil and gas. It is little surprise if more people turn to resources like horses to get around and fireplaces to stay warm in the future. Yet is the price too high? Are we ready to chop down the cherry tree that gave us life in the first place? When the everyday working man and woman get sourced out along with the resources they need to survive on a daily basis, the cost of living is too high.

What do you think?

I think that the economy is in such a rut that it is going to take a long while before it is repaired. Everything keeps going up, besides the paychecks. I don't see how the government expects people to survive. I penny pinch in what ever way possible. If i didn't it would be extremely difficult for my family. I think that real soon there will be no middle class. There will be those who are lower class who are just barely making it, and the upper class who have no problem. There will no longer be those who can live comfortably.

Hi tlb082! I think you are right about the middle class dwindling to a non-existence. That's not a very comforting thought, yes? One insight I have is the future might, and I say this very lightly, include people working out of thier homes more often than not. The state of the economy and its resources might eventually leave us no choice but to work out of our homes, using the resources already in the home.

life is hard when the prices of everything go up except one's paycheque. i shop quite often at thrift stores and dollar stores (be careful when buying food at a dollar store...you may be paying MORE than the grocery store!) we make a lot of soups and stews during the winter and make due with the stuff we already have.

Hi cher913! What you say about prices going up while our paychecks hopefully stay the same is so true! It is frustrating. Check out my post on potential jobs from this morning, and you will see what I mean. I have also noticed food at Aldi's and the Dollar Store is getting more pricey. I guess they have to make a profit, too unfortunately. I have bought food from the Dollar Store many times, and another caution is to check the expiration dates. One can never be too careful, especially when consuming food from Food Pantires or Dollar Stores. We do what we must, yes? Speaking of stews, one time I made homemade chicken noodle, and I was impressed with myself, cause it lasted for a week, and the noodles I made with my pasta maker! Stews are a great way to get though any season, yes?

Life is getting harder and harder to get by. I have found I need to be more and more creative to make ends meet. I am trying to figure out how to make soap from things around my home just to save a penny here and there.

Here's a thought, happythoughts! Maybe the US economy should return to the old bartering system? We could trade food for clothes, and the necessary supplies. That would be interesting. I have not learned how to make soap (yet), but I love crafts and being frugal, so I think I wil have to check it out! I have seem the kits in crafts stores like Hobby Lobby and Micheals. Maybe look online?

It alarms me that the current president and both of the presidential candidates are failing to address the state of our economy. We are tetering on the borderline of something similar to the depression of the 1930's and very few people seem to notice or acknowledge what is happening. Most think it's just a passing phase that will be gone in a few months and they'll return to their "beyond their means" spending habits.

Hi newtondak! One way to think of it, is at least the money is going back into the economy, yes? Americans generally can be so wasteful, and they, we, get so accustomed to material comforts, that we don't realize what we already have, yes? I am glad for the fact I have food in my fridge, a place to live, and clothes on my back. One positive thing I will say for society now is that there are more programs and resources available to the us than there were then, yes?

The cost of living is hurting everyone. We do almost all of our grocery shopping at Aldis. I still buy paper products and health and beauty things at Wal-mart. I can still get Aim toothpaste for 1.00 a vo5 shampoo for .69 cents. Last winter we had to use the food pantry to survive. We hang our laundry on the line and wash everything but white clothes in cold water. That has really helped on the electric bill. You have to do whatever is necessary to survive in these times.

I especially enjoy going to the local Dollar Stores for personal hygiene products, and sometimes the Food Pantry will have some extra stuff, too. Aldi's will surely profit in these hard times, as more and more people turn to the stock-up store. It has gotten to the point I will actually wash some of my clothes in the bathtub in cold water like you said.
