Religious accomodations in the workplace |
| |
| Here I go again.... I really cannot sit here and read all this BS about accomodating religious beliefs in the workplace without reacting. I was looking at a public announcement type about religion in the workplace and found these stupidities...giving more rights to immigrants than the native people: source:http://64.233.169.104/sea... During my job interview, the employer asked me if I am a Christian. I told her I am Hindu. Can she refuse to hire me because of my religion? No. It is against the law for employers to discriminate on the basis of religion against employees or applicants when hiring or firing. In Seattle, the law applies to companies and organizations with one or more employees. This law does not apply to religious institutions. I’m not Buddhist, but I’m applying for a groundskeeper job at a local Buddhist temple. Can they deny me a job simply because I’m not Buddhist? Yes. Federal laws regarding religious discrimination do not apply to religious institutions. Many religious institutions, however, have open hiring policies and employ people of other faiths. Is it just me or this seems to be at the very least contradicting?? Let me know what you think of this and maybe give other examples you are aware of | | | | | |

| | This is a bunch of bull sh%&t and we all know it. A job, no matter where it is at should not discriminate against religion even if you are not of that belief. I hate to say but, everything is going down hill and it gets harder and harder to find a good job anywhere. And now they are going to discriminate against everyone who applies! It's flipping ridiculous! | | | | | | |

| | In scenario 1 I agree with the job candidate; s/he should never have been asked about his or her religion. In scenario 2 I'm on the fence, for a large operation I would say don't worry about the religion of your groundskeeper. But in a smaller operation, it would be nice to have a member of your church doing the work because s/he would be likely to interact with parishioners (sp?). I believe in religious freedom, and I believe every citizen has the right to live here free from persecution. But religion and the workplace really never need to interact, so there shouldn't ever really be special accomodations made. Of course, as always, I need to leave that comment open for the occasional special accomodation (I'm thinking religious grieving process, if someone dies and your religion dictates a certain procedure to care for it that interferes with the work schedule). --Busty | | | | | | |

| | I know to be able to teach at a Baptist University you have to be a Baptist. And you have to believe in Christian principles even to work there part time. With religous institutions I understand this. They want to have people around them of the same beliefs (especially in a teaching institution) and I am perfectly ok with that. But in secular institutions they shouldn't ask you your relgious beliefs. I don't think it is legal in the US. | | | | | | |

| | I agree with what you have stated ... though I feel religious bodies should be allowed to employ people pf their own religion since that person would be well acquainted with the rituals and preparations required to be done ... otherwise I feel work is worship and religion should not be a hindrance to work and performance in business. | | | | | | |
