Plastic bag waste, and fixing the problem | | Everywhere I go, I see so many wasted plastic bags around, littering the ground. These things do not biodegrade, and use up valuable, limited resources. The resources of our planet are limited, and running out at an alarming rate. It seems like this waste we see is unacceptable, yet it continues, with nothing stopping it. I'm not sure something like this has been proposed in the US, but what about having a 5 cent deposit on plastic bags? When you buy stuff, and use one, you pay an additional 5 cents per plastic bag. You can return them, and get it back, just like with cans. I think this would definitely encourage people to recycle their plastic bags, and lead to less waste. I think this would be a small price to pay to help change peoples behavior towards something better for the planet, and even just our own communities by decreasing levels of litter on our streets.

Well firstly I re-use some of my plastic bags by lining my small bins in house with. I also take some of my bags to the local charity shop so that they can re-use them for their customers. Some of the large chain supermarkets here have a big like skip that you can deposit your unwanted plastic bags into and one of the supermarkets gives you loyality points for using your own bags after paying for your groceries. Also in my town the smaller shops have stopped giving out plastic bags and you can buy a recycled bag with a special recyled logo on it and the town name which is really nice. So I am doing I can really when it comes to plastic bags! I live in a small town in England by the way, just in case you were wondering!

Think about the dirtiest homes you have every seen. Think of the people who don't wash their hands after they go to the bathroom. Think of the homes with shaggy dogs and cats, where bits of fir are all over everything. Now picture yourself putting your produce in bags that were returned by these people.
Another point would be, the deposit thing has been tried. There used to be a 10 cent deposit on pop bottles. You got your dime back if you return your bottle. When I was a kid, we used to walk along the roads picking up bottles. We each usually collected enough bottles that we could all go to the movie on saturday (which ended up being about a dollar each because we also wanted popcorn and a cherry coke). The dime was enough for a lot of people to keep their bottles and redeem them when they went back to the store... but for most people, it wasn't.
People buy cloth bags for about $1 each now. It's cheap enough that those who want to "Go Green" can afford to. Those who choose not to aren't going to be swayed by a dime per bag.
I think we're doing it the way we should. Give people a good choice, and let us be free to make it.

TheHawkBat (627) | 1 year ago | I know this is going to sound really totalitarian of me, but what if people make the wrong choice, and it is obvious it is wrong. Should they really be given the choice? I mean, what benefit is there of letting them do something like that that ultimately does a decent amount of harm?

ParaTed2k (4591) | 1 year ago | You're right, it sounds totalitarian of you. How many other choices are you willing to force on everyone else? I knew people in the 80s who wanted to ban eggs. They had the same passion and "evidence" backing their demands for "our own good".
I've seen cities and states mandate recycling. Then we learn that it is more polluting and costly to recycle some products. The State of Wisconsin (and others) wants to mandate E85 Ethanol. Nevermind that the plants running now have been fined several times for poluting the water, our cars get much lower gas mileage using the crap, and poultry farms are going out of business because feed is too costly.
The fact is, totalitarian methods have never produced what they set out to do. All they do is make the problems worse.
