This phot attatched is from my beebalm flower bed by the side of my house in Minnesota. I have seen many of this species of butterfly lately in my yard pollinating everything. I tried many times to try and get a better shot but it kept fluttering off to another flower bud. Do you have any idea as to the species of this butterfly at all? Have you any photos of your local butterflies to share?

Camera shy! LOL!lollollol

myLot reputation of 95/100. webeishere (12511)   ranked 9 out of 3,157 in photography  1 year ago

Pure white?
No butterflies are all one solid color.
May be a moth possibly. Thanks bunches.

I think there are some solid ones, blue, sulphur, lime green and white. They are usually pretty small though.

My mom used to call these little ones 'cabbage butterflies.' We'd get a lot of them in our garden, and they were solid white, or yellow. I don't see them around anymore.

When this beastie is at rest does it slowly open and close its wings or sit with them closed? Then it is a butterfly. If it sits at rest with the wings open, then its a moth. (something I learned from a friend who studies butterflies.)

I'm afraid I really don't know what kind of butterfly or moth it is since I'm not familure with the secies in your area - I would think it was a swallowtail if it had the extra little faux antennas on the back of the wings, but I can't see that part of the wing, and it was in my area.

myLot reputation of 95/100. webeishere (12511)   ranked 9 out of 3,157 in photography  1 year ago

I new that about the wings etc.
This is definetly a butterfly.
Thanks bunches.

As usual, I am answering from my email, and of course I will look and see if it hidden somewhere in my memory bank, and if it is not, then I will search the web for it. I am anxious to go see the picture.

Looks like a swallowtail or a parnassian. Can you tell I am researching? The white butterflies are Cabbage Whites, large whites and small whites. The cabbage whites would be seen mostly around plants of the cabbage family, like broccoli. The site I looked at said there are lots of swallowtails, and parnassians are similar, but are translucent.

myLot reputation of 95/100. webeishere (12511)   ranked 9 out of 3,157 in photography  1 year ago

Ahhh. Thanks for this info.
I have seen these white "moths" around my brocholli.
Now I know that it is actually a butterfly.
I learn something new daily here on myLot.

Wow, they're really called 'cabbage butterflies.' I wonder if the yellow ones are cabbage ones too. I thought my mom just invented the name, because they were always around our cabbage plants, as I've mentioned above. lol Thanks for the lesson. Good to know.

The yellow ones are called sulphurs. I do not know why I remember all of this, but I do. You can probably search it under that name. What I would like to know about are the neon green little ones that you see during the alfalfa harvest. Guess I will do some more digging.

It looks to me like an Easter tiger swallowtail butterfly!

I actually just got back home from taking photos of butterflies! My "homework" for the photography club I belong to is to take pictures of flowers. So I was just at a local garden with the intent to shoot flowers, but when I got there the place was swarming with butterflies! So most of the photos I took were of the butterflies!

Several years ago they had a butterfly exhibit at the Tulsa Zoo. My sister was down there at the time, so she took my younger cousins to see it. I always wondered how they pulled something like that off. I mean, they are live butterflies... But I love how pretty they are. I don't know what kind the one in your photo is, but it's gorgeous none the less. Just one more thing God made beautiful.: )

myLot reputation of 95/100. webeishere (12511)   ranked 9 out of 3,157 in photography  1 year ago

I went to a local Zoo here recently. They have a Butterfly exhibit with thousands of butterflies in it. very beautiful to sit in there waiting for any to land on your body. I had a blast and got many photos like the one I am attatching here from that visit.

That butterfly almost looks like the type I had photographed years ago....and I identified mine as an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail... Since it's nearing September I just bet the Monarchs will be in full force soon as they start their migrations to Mexico...so would imagine other butterflies will be more noticeable as well

I had a slew of Monarchs visiting my floers and veggies a couple weeks ago so they may be on the move already as I haven't seen one for a week or more now.

Hi Grandpa Bob, happy

I missed this discussion, as I haven't been getting all of my notifications again lately. I love butterflies, and when I saw your photo, I too thought it was some sort of swallowtail. We mostly get Monarchs around here, and even so, I don't see that many. It's rare to see some of the other varieties. A few years ago, I visited a butterfly conservatory in Niagara Falls. It was a wonderful experience with lots of tropical foliage, and of course, countless species of beautiful butterflies.
