My employer thinks I'm a techie guy  | | | |  He calls me the USB geek. But really, I'm not a technical person. I'm just a fast learner. And it just so happens that I'm familiar with the technological trends that have swept our culture these past few years. The advent of the notebook computers, mini-digital cameras, usb flash drives, 3g phones, mp3s, mp4s, PSPs and other modern electronic devices have consistently flooded our market that you cannot just ignore the benefits and opportunity that these products offer to non-technical persons like me.
So everytime I insert my USB drive to my laptop, my boss flashes a sheepish grin, as if thinking in his head, 'here he goes again, this USB geek'. I really don't mind him thinking that way. Because I know I am just keeping myself abreast with the times. I don't want to be left behind.

| | Hi GardenGerty, the USB flash drive has already taken the place of computer diskettes where information of all kinds are stored (word files, images, powerpoint and video clips, etc.). It's a small pen-like (shorter than a pen) device where you just insert it into the usb port of your pc or laptop and then wholla... just save all info into that gadget and you can keep it in your pocket, hang it around your neck with a lanyard or just tuck it in your laptop bag for safekeeping. And the memory of such usb drives can go as high as 40 gigabytes (I was told). I only use a 1 gigabyte drive at the moment for my word files. But it has come in handy for me and has worked wonders in the office. Hope this helps. | | | |

| |  I don't just get every new thing that comes out, but I do like USBs and such because they make things easier. I have all my music and photos on a USB drive so I can take them with me when I travel if I can't take my laptop. One thing I am in the process of doing is taking old photos of myself and my family and scanning them using one of the local photo centers. I scan them and then put them on a photo CD. This way, I can keep these photos secure for years and years and I can get copies made for other people in my family. That is something that every family in the world could use. And I just love digital cameras. I love to take pictures but in the old days you never knew if the photo was good or not until several weeks later when you finally filled up the roll of film and sent it off somewhere for developing. Now, with digital, I just take several shots of whatever I want and then get rid of the ones I don't like and keep the ones I like. So, don't worry about your boss. You aren't just being a "geek," you are using technology to make your life (and his) easier.

| |  I'm a bit like youmy friend, fast learners tring to be abreast with new technologies and more. You boss might think you are a geek, but that's more because he is probably left behind. Atleast you have the problem of only thinking tht your boss gets the impression. My previous and present bosses have dumped the responsibility on me. I'm not a techie. But now nothing in the IT field gets purchased without getting it routed through me. There is a problem they call me. It can get bugging, but I suppose it's also good that your knowledge is being put to use.
