Maine is great, you should visit! email this discussion to a friend?

I lived in Maine for the first 24 years of my life. I just recently moved to Kansas. I lived all over the state including Machias, Hampden, Bangor, Old Town, Orono and Portland.

I was starting to get sick of the harsh winters and short summers but it really is a beautiful state, especially with the foliage in the fall. There aren't many places that beat it.

I also lived in Maine for the first 29 years of my life. I was sick and tired of so much snow and long winters. I am now in Virginia and hate it. The weather is great but I would go back to Maine if I had the chance. I couldn't wait to get out of that state but home is home I guess. I would recommend everyone visit at least once in their lives as it is a beautiful state. Just don't go in the winter unless of course you love the snow.

Last winter was especially ridiculous when it came to snow. We were finally at a point in our lives where we could pick up and leave and try something new, so we did. The weather has been great here in Kansas but the idea of tornados still kinda freaks me out.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to stay away from Maine for good but you really can't learn to appreciate or love a place if you don't try something new and realize how much it really meant to you. I'm starting to realize that already.

Fryediddy - hi. I lived in and around the Portland area for seven years. This was some time ago and honestly, I thought it was boring there. I'm sure it's different now.

The winters were brutal, 20 degrees below for two weeks straight.

I would like to go back just to see my house. It was built at the turn of the century, and we restored it. It took forever, the house had been vacant for years. I loved that house.

I liked the job I had there as well. The store was right on the river. All three of my kids were conceived during those long, cold winters, and now they all live in Florida, and only one of them has ever seen snow. Weird.

I wonder what Maine is like now? I moved away in 1983.

I was born in 1983 so my perception of Maine is probably a bit different from yours. Things have changed quite a bit since I was a kid so I'm sure you'd be pretty surprised. I've already started to miss it after a couple of months so I'm sure I won't be able to stay away long. I sure won't miss the cold. I can't imagine not ever seeing snow. No matter where I live I want to make sure my kids know snow so they know what I had to put up with all those years.:-)

Well then, one of these days I will head back up to Maine, in the summer. I remember the beaches as rocky with rough sand.

My ex and I dug a big hole in the sand for our two year old daughter. I can't remember which beach. When we got back to the car, I realized my engagement ring was missing. Yup. buried in the sand. My ex went back with a sifter, but we never recovered it. It was a small diamond, but it was an unusual pear shape and I'm so sad I lost it all those years ago.

By the way, that same daughter, who is much older now, did see snow. She came to visit me and as the plane landed she wondered to herself about the white stuff on the ground. She was thinking, they don't have sand here do they? What a laugh we had when she realized it was snow!
