Do you use environmentally friendly things to clean with. I use bicarb and vinegar to clean somethings, a steam mop for the kitchen and bathroom floors (so don't use any chemicals), and eucalyptus or lavendar oil in water for wiping down where it's good to have a bit of disinfecting.

Do you use these sorts of things or do you prefer the chemical cleaning products?

i use equal parts of vinegar and rubbing alcohol for surface cleaner, floor cleaner and glass cleaner. make soft scrub with washing soda / baking soda / borax and a bit of liquid castle soap for soft scrub. all of my face care products are natural(and homemade) now, and i am working on bath products.

l like Pine Sol for my floors, & use Vim degreaser for the counter top and stove.
I also sometimes use Mr.Clean...but I do like the fresh smell of Febreeze, more than the others. The only thing that's "green" in my house, is the garbage bags.

Thanks for your thoughts crazydaisy. I am afraid garbage bags are "green" in colour only!

I'm very sensitive to chemical cleaning products, but I do use things like bleach, occasionally. Mostly, it's vinegar and baking soda. I even use vinegar as a shower spray after I shower. The counters are cleaned with an all-natural surface cleaner that's cheaper than most of the chemical ones -- and it smells great! I do like to keep bleach around for our white, cast iron sink, but the only time it stains is when we're gone and my SIL keeps pouring coffee into it without rinsing it afterwards! angry

Hi fluffnflowers I'm glad to see that someone else uses vinegar as well.

I could be wrong but I think bleach is sort of meant to be ok for the environment - I think I've seen it somewhere.

I have been gradually getting away from chemical cleaning products, for the sake of our health, and I don't like them around my daughter. The one thing I have notice is a lot of companies are coming out with green products that are suppose to be safer. I do want to get a steam mop, but my fiance is worried that it will ruin our floors. We just put in new laminate wood flooring. Have you had any issues with yours?

myLot reputation of 95/100. vegegirl (371)   ranked 31 out of 754 in homemaker  4 years ago

Hi tlb

I haven't had issues but I just have old vinyl and ceramic tiles - and they usually come up a treat - specially for bad marks and stuff that looks difficult to get off - the steam mop is great - I think I used it in my last house that had real wooden flooring - but that was years ago and I can't remember exactly, but I think I did.

The only green cleaning products I buy are the dishwashing detergent and laundry detergent, then all other types of cleaning I just use the things I mentioned and also the special cloths that don't need anything except maybe water.

We are not exposed enough about this topic and this is why community site like MyLot should play their role. A discussion like this help people like me a lot. I have to admit I still use chemical cleaning product. It is more easy, but I think I will try the alternative one day...

myLot reputation of 95/100. vegegirl (371)   ranked 31 out of 754 in homemaker  4 years ago

Thankyou Nizhama
I am glad you are interested in the discussion, even if it just sets you thinking about this. It really is pretty easy to use bicarb of soda and vinegar to clean sinks and things with - it is probably just that we aren't used to it!

I clean most everything with vinegar and/or baking soda. Even the "environmentally-friendly" products that are sold in the stores seem to have a lot of unnecessary ingredients.

myLot reputation of 95/100. vegegirl (371)   ranked 31 out of 754 in homemaker  4 years ago

Thanks newtondak - we seem to have similar ideas. Maybe we could bottle the baking soda as eco cleaner and give it as presents with instructions to all our friends that don't know this simple secret!

myLot reputation of 74/100. newtondak (2145)   ranked 16 out of 754 in homemaker  4 years ago

It's sure a lot less expensive than all those fancy cleaners that don't do any bette job of cleaning.

I agree with you on that one!

I noticed this discussion hadn't gotten any responses in awhile and I thought that it would be a good idea to let everyone else know about it. I'm going to make a discussion about a list of discussions I have responded to that haven't been responded to lately. This is the first discussion I found for cleaning so this will be first on the list. To get to the response, I don't use any of these type of cleaners but I also don't clean my own house yet, my fiance and I live with his parents and we're happy here. When and if we do move I'll probably be using stuff like this as I like being environmentally friendly.
