My Kitten Was Snakebit! |
| |
| My wee son came in telling me the kitten was crying and got in ants and the ants bit him. So I followed him out and I could hear the kitten yowling. I finally located him and knew something must be bad as he is my quiet kittie. I searched him over and could tell it was something with his right front leg, or paw. He bit me when I tried to look. I got the kennel, put him in it to let him calm down and went and washed out the bite really well. He is not yet old enough for his rabies shot. I went back and tried to check the paw again, he was favoring it and he was not happy. He finally let me look and I couldn't see anything to cause it. I then palpated the area and got a pretty good pain response from him. I thought maybe he had been stung by a wasp or ground hornet so I gave him a bit of liquid Benedryl per my pet first aid book. My friend, who is an EMT, came over about then and we checked him out better. By that time it was starting to swell and I was able to see the marks where the fangs entered the flesh. One was oozing clear yellowish fluid and the other blood. My First Aid for Pets book said that usually if a pet is going to succumb to the bite they will do so in the first 1-2 hrs but are not out of the woods for about 10 hrs. His little paw continued to swell. We flushed the area with lukewarm water. Then we took some baking soda, benedryl spray and come Caladryl ointment and made a poultice out of it and applied it to his paw and wrapped it loosely. It's been about 4 hours now and he is resting and seems to be doing well. He is drinking and purrs when I check on him. I have him in the house in a small kennel with food water and a potty box. If anyone has any other info that would help, I would appreciate it. We can't afford a trip to the vet right now. I am doing all I can for him and he seems to be resting comfortably. No shock or fever. I used to work for a vet so I do have a bit of experience. My friend says cats are pretty resiliant. I hope so as this little guy is my favorite. We rescued him and are pretty attached to him now. I am hoping we will rescue him this time as well. We are pretty sure it was a copperhead as the fang spread was small. They are not as toxic and sometimes you won't get any venom or only one fang will have venom, from what we observed that seems to be the case here. Have you ever had a cat bit by a snake? Did you treat it at home? | | | | | |

| | Thanks ma friend. He seems to be doing ok. I will be glad for tomorrow which will tell me more. It's been about 4 hrs now and according to the book we have about 6 more to go at least, to tell for sure. I just hope the venom doesn't rot the skin as is known to happen in some cases. He's such a wee trooper and pretty kitty. | | | |

| | I hope the kitten recovers fully. I'm glad it wasn't your son that got bit! I would be scared to death to let him out of the house now. I'm deathly afraid of snakes. So bad that I can't even watch them on television! | | | | | | |

| | Well the cats were outside the back fence, in the undergrowth. That is why we got cats because we had seen a few copperheads around the house. This is their first encounter with a snake and my friend, who has many cats, says that he will never be bit again. She says they learn quickly how to take out a snake. Cats are great hunters, snakes usually just stay away when they sense cats around. You can tell he probably batted at it, with his paw, the way the bite is set on the foot. He's a smart wee cat and I figured he was going to be the best hunter out of the two. I am just a bit worried because he is yet so small. | | | |

| | These kittens came from a bunch of outdoor litters. We adopted them. The mommacats are kinda wild but these 2 guys are happy as clams to be loved and petted. I can just point at them and they start purring away, LOUDLY! I sure hope he is ok. | | | |

| | That is rather scary, hope everything works out well for the kitten. Since this happened to your cat, aren't you afraid for your children? Luckily, I do not live where there are snakes, but I know I would always be afraid of something happening. The treatment you and your friend used, is it to draw out any poison? I will pray for your kitty, the he will recover without any problems. | | | | | | |

| | aww, the poor baby kitty, I'm sorry it got bit. I hope that he does better, and I know you must have been scared and still are now. You seem to be doing a lot for him, I wish I could tell you more but alas I don't know. My fiance's cousin works for a vet, but I think she's at work and / or busy. Our dog got bit by a bigger dog and we as a family rushed him to the vet and he's doing better. His fur is growing back now, and we only take him out in the backyard. We have Coyotes and all, but we know it was a dog because my mother in law saw the dog bite Cracker (our dog) I hope that your's does better! | | | | | | |

| | Thanks cowgirl, I hope so too. I would call a vet here, but mostly they won't tell you a thing without seeing the pet. If I could find an old country vet I would have a chance but there are few left anymore. | | | |

| | Very few, but not uncommon. Have you actually tried calling the vet? even they might have a number of someone who will talk to you about the cat! | | | |

| | Oh Lordy, Irish, I hope your kitten will be OK. Sounds like you took all the measures that any vet would use. That's another notch in my "WHY I DESPISE SNAKES" gun. The kitten was probably amused by the movements of the snake and perhaps wanted to play with it. Snakes are truly "snakes in the grass" and they apparently have no sense of humor or desire to play. All they want to do is frighten people and eat or attack most anything that moves in their direction. Memo to God: God, you made a big mistake when you created the snake. BIG mistake. Would you consider taking that creation back? (C) 2008 RJScott | | | | | | |

| | My main concern is infection from the bite, I don't have antibiotics available. Just say a wee prayer for our kittie. As long as he is drinking well and voiding then I think we are home free. Just want to make sure his kidneys are ok as that is another concern. So far he is drinking but is none too happy about the wee potty box. LOL! | | | |

| | well good luck with your little kitty, I hope he survives and if not then I am sorry, just know that you did all you can to help him feel comfortable, if he's purring then that is a good sign, if he's eating and drinking water that is good as well, just keep an eye on it as best as you can, if anything ask a vet doctor the best thing you can do for him, maybe they can give you some tips or look online search Google for tips on snake bites to pets etc. | | | | | | |

| | So far he is doing ok and not showing any of the common symptoms for the fatal poisoning. It does say it can come on suddenly so I will continue to watch him. Seems the only thing we did wrong was that we should have applied a slight pressure bandage between the bite and the heart and loosened it for 5 min every hour or so. I can't go back now. I just pray we did well enough by him. | | | |
