"I'm stressed out "- this a statement you would have used or come across so often. Yes,a lot of our illnesses and diseases,be it depression, heart ailments, diabetes...even surpression of our immune system are related to or caused due to stress. However having said that some amount of stress has its positives as well. Like, our responses to stress in certain ways does keep us alert and safe during emergencies. Further an optimum level of stress is required to motivate us to improve our lives. If things were just handed over to us without any effort on our part would we be contented ? Please share your thoughts .

Alok very well said! I agree to what you have to say. Its shocking how we are heading towards (or have we already?) towards a mechanical, robotic life devoid of any emotions except stress and subsequent depression! Soon , I guess we would nee "health leaves' instead of 'sick leaves'. I need to chill a bit, I need a HL (health leave). Or how about, 'I am dog stressed out, need a HL urgently.' I feel, stress is an integral part of our lives. We all have it, the magnitude may differ and also it depends on the constitution of a person. Our aim should be to minimise it in whichever and whatever way possible. Stress, as in pressure (job pressure, social pressure..) is good, as you have said. That gets us going, makes us know our worth and limitations and excel in our jobs. I just hope that made sense. smiles... PS: Only yesterday, I was hoping to write an article on this. Will write it soon.

Oh yes Mimpi, It made a lot of sense. We are heading towards an overstressed life, this is the negative side of it and we don't seem to be able to control it. We need to find ways to control it the optimum level which is good and helps us in getting motivated and makes life that much more interesting. You need to chill out Mimpi.Do take your "Health Leave". BTW: I must admit that this discussion was due to my getting stressed as I was "running out of ideas". Thanks for the inspiration. An I most certainly look forward to the article. Do write it soon.

There actually IS a level of stress than is deemed to be of beneift called EUSTRESS. A basic definition is "a pleasant or curative stress". Endorphins could be classed as a stress as well becasue of the changes and the rush they trigger in the human body. Endorphins also create a positive feeling because they activate specific brain sensors. "Fight or flight" actions we experience when faced with a confrontational situation like you have mentioned I agree can arguably be referred to as a good stress as well because these actions can be to our benefit. If there was no stress whatosever in our lives we would more than likely become lazy and non-responsive! The key is trying to limit the bad stress as much as possible!

James, Thanks a ton for the insight on "EUSTRESS". It sure would be boring life though without that little bit of stress which keeps us from becoming lazy. You are also right about the need to control the bad stress. That is where the problems start. Really appreciate it.

I do agree that we do need a certain amount of stress in our lives to help motivate us. At the moment I am under a lot of stress due to finances and it finally dawned on me the other day that maybe this stress means that I should look for different work, so I am. If I did not have this stress I would probably have kept on doing the same old thing and that maybe isn't how it should be. And yes I think life would be a little dull if there were no stress. Although I think I could use a little less stress right now :)!!!!

I think , in todays world of competition..we need to handle stress.. In modern world it is called handling pressure...or working under pressure..so it is necessary,,, Just like a certain level of sugar is necessary.. even for diabetes patients...

Yes I do believe that stress has its different points. Sometimes it can be constructive under certain circumstances but it could also lead to diseases as you have mentioned. I believe that stress needs to be kept in check and your question about things just being handed over to us without any effort does bear a response that I think that we do have to struggle and have a challenge sometimes to get what we want. Life has to require some effort on our part or it wouldn't be life.

Hi there alokn99, I worked for a major world corporation, and I don't know how other supervisors in the company handled things, but our supervisor would occasionally notice someone who was feeling extremely stressed out. She would go to that person, and tell them to take a mental health day. That meant you should take tomorrow off, and just relax, let your mind rewind, and then, you can come back to work feeling better and more productive. They, of course, wouldn't do this at a time when we were swamped with work, i.e., under a lot of stress, but as soon as things slowed down a little, anyone who had been working especially hard, would get a mental health day. It was really a wonderful company to work for, as they did recognize the stress under which we worked, and they were sure to do everything that they could to keep us "up and running" at our full production rate. Hope that your life only has good stress in it. LOL

Thanks for sharing your experiences. The concept of a Health day is something unique and really needs some serious thinking about from a lot of organisations around the world. Moe than that i suppose we too should conciously recognise and control the good stress from becoming a negative one. Thanks for your best wishes. So far my life had the not so good stresses but intend changing all that very soon.

You are lucky to work in a corporation like that bbjwlsn! =) Your supervisors know how to treat their employees well. I hope all companies are like that.

i don't really like stress because it get me very tired when the stress is over. i could think of times when i have to go through stress but i don't think is the stress that push me over the hard times of our life. i would say that it is what i see in the end of the line. what do u gain in after these stress, the goal that you want to accomplish keeps you going and being able to do the impossible.
