Native American tribe allows same-sex marriage  | |  Has anyone seen the article regarding the Native American tribe in Oregon that has allowed same-sex marriage? I am an open-minded person and feel that whatever may be may be, but for some reason I was surprised by this. I always saw the Native American culture as one that solidly stood by it's old traditional values. Not saying it's a bad thing, but just quite surprised! Anyone else?

Many, but not all Native American tribes held homosexual tribe members in higher regard than heterosexual tribe members. They saw them differently than straight tribal members because they thought it was something special because gay women or men were thought to possess both qualities of the male and female spirit.
Some tribes may not see gay tribal members this way, but some did. So I don't think it's that surprising that one tribe now is allowing it to occur.

| highflyingxangel (6555) | 3 months ago | I actually did not know this until I took a introduction course to Native American culture last year for college. I knew that some where pretty traditonal, but I just never thought beyond that. There were some, but I'm not sure if any still do, that believe it's OK to push their wives around and what not. However, for the most part, they're very respectful of others. It mainly depends on the tribe and the tribes location. If I remember correctly, the tribes that were more aggressive to their wives tended to be tribes that were in colder climates.
I think my textbook also said that some tribes also held transgendered tribe members in high regard because they too were thought to embody both the male and female spirit. I think it had something to do with being able to communicate easier with both spirits but I'm really not sure. | |
