What's green and fuzzy and in my cupboard drawer? |
|
I just went to have breakfast and pulled my bread out of the cupboard drawer and when I opened the package it had a strong odor. I was not surprised to find that it had turned fuzzy and green with mold. I live by myself and don't use alot of bread except for toast or an occasional sandwich. I should keep it in the freezer and just take out what I need when I want it...but I don'! Do you occasionally find your bread green and fuzzy? Or do you eat it so fastt it doesn't have time to get stale?

1. muscles4me (9143) | 1 year ago | I seldom buy bread as I live alone also. If I am low on cash and don't feel like going to the bank because payday is a few days away I MIGHT go buy cheap bread and have pbj or just pb sandwichs for a couple od days. It is harder to shop when single than it is to cook for one IMO.

hiddenwing (1416) | 1 year ago | I seldom buy bread too. If Mcdonald's are considered to be bread, I sometimes buy it. On the other hand, I have never found the thing like u said. Take care!

2. tyc415 (4493) | 1 year ago | My husband takes sandwiches for his lunch to work each day and sometimes I will eat a little bread through the week and same thing with my son so very seldom does the bread get green and fuzzy here. Now sometimes we have bought a brand new loaf of bread and it is already getting a little moldy which is bad.

4. leenie50 (1829) | 1 year ago | Jill, As you said, keep it in the freezer and take out what you need. My mom always did this, even though there was nine of us kids. There was always a couple different types of bread on the table. Also, she would go to the day old store. So the freezer keeps it fresh. You can also keep it in the frige but it won't stay as fresh. It's a good way not to waste. leenie

6. ellie333 (6793) | 1 year ago | Hi Jill, I did start buying cheaper bread when everything went up in price but false economy as it does go off really quickly so I buy the best now and find I do tend to use it up especially as we have to feed the ducks often too so any going a bit stale goes to the pond. I do always have a back up loaf in the freezer anyway but it sounds like maybe you should start freezing again if you are not getting through it. Ellie @:D

8. PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | Oh, that is just too funny! In FL, when the bread gets moldy, it just has small white dots on it. Well, I guess that could be due to the kind of bread I buy, which is whole wheat.
Anyhoo, yes, my bread occasionally goes moldy. But ever since the prices got so high, I use a ziploc bag and just take out a few slices at a time and put them in the ziploc bag. I leave the whole loaf in the freezer.
Something else I've done is put the loaf in the fridge, but my husband doesn't like "cold" bread. The other way just works better for us.

jillhill (11824) | 1 year ago | ANd the self defroster makes the bread dry out....but I should prepackage it when I get home into ziplocks...freeze what I don't need. That's a very good idea.

9. Goodie123 (7548) | 1 year ago | Hehehe green and fuzzy, Yum. I always keep my bread in the freezer. When I make hubby's work lunches, just whip a few slices out and away I go. I try to only leave a few slices out ready for daily use. In the summer I keep the bread in the fridge as it goes mouldy very quickly here.

10. lilybug (15367) | 1 year ago | We keep our bread in the fridge most of the time. It gets left out on the counter for a day or two, but after that it goes in the fridge to keep it from molding. We also have extra loaves in the freezer. When it is hot out I will take frozen bread and make my son sandwich for his school lunch with the frozen bread and it thaws by lunch time and keeps the rest of his lunch cool too.

jillhill (11824) | 1 year ago | My daughter says that she used to do that but the self defrosting part of the refridge makes the bread dry out.....but it sounds like you use it right away anyway! THanks for sharing!
