Crochet: A Lost Art |
| |
| I have been told that crochet is a lost art as I sell handmade crochet blankets on E-Bay and several other websites and the blankets that I sold to other people some of their respones were that crocheting is an lost art. Sometimes the people of today are either too busy to crochet or don't know how but someone in their family was a crocheter I have been crochets since I was 16yrs and finally learned how to make money doing it. I have sent my blankets to far away places as France, London, Japan, etc have a good day | | | | | |

| | Never really thought about it being a lost art, but I think I'd have to agree that not as many women take it up as much anymore. I've crocheted for many years, probably at least 40+. I used to make an afghan every winter for one family member, or friend, etc. In between I'd make baby sets: booties, cap, jacket, and a matching blanket. I've never really tried to make money with it, so I'm glad to read that you are! That's really cool! If I may ask, around how much are you able to get for them on eBay? I've thought about doing that but didn't think there'd be too many interested. Glad also to read here that there's other people who still crochet! I like to do mine mostly in the winter while I'm listening to tv or something. | | | | | | |

| | Thanks for the info :-) I never heard of Etsy, will have to check it out. I love doing the matching baby sets. Usually I just give them for shower presents and never really thought about selling any. Maybe this winter I'll have to try it. Thanks once again! | | | |

| | I wouldn't say that it's a lost art, but not nearly as many people do it as did say, in my mother or grandmother's era. It was more of a necessity then than it is now, with everything being mass-produced and available at your local store. I do know that the interest has picked up in recent years and more young women are wanting to learn, and men make the best designers! I make baby blankets and afghans and such too, and have posted several of my things here and in the 'crafts' discussion area. I'd love to see some of your work. | | | | | | |

| | The best thing for you to do is to get yourself a small learn to crochet kit or a book that explains in simple detail how to crochet once you get the hang of it, it will be easy I make only 2 styles of blankets the granny square & the zig zag or ripple style so once you learn how just stick to a simple style until you get better hope this was of some help to you have a good day | | | |

| | Here's a on-line link to learn how to crochet for free. You can print them off for reference. They even have instructions and pictures for left-handers trying to learn. http://www.howtocrocheting.com/ how to crochet offers a free 5 part e-course that shows you how, and gives you handy tips to remember for the beginner. Also, don't forget there's a lot of good beginner's books to learn from that have excellent pictures to help you learn. Oh...and if I may suggest...for whatever your first project is, (scarf, whatever) do it with a sportweight yarn. If you try to learn with say baby yarns, or anything that is 'fuzzy' or a novelty yarn, it'll be much harder to see your stitches. You want to start with something that is easy to the eye so you can easily see if you made a mistake, and if you do make a mistake and need to rip out a few stitches, the sportweight is easier to pull stitches from without snagging. It's also easier to learn to hold and maintain tension with. Creations is right, once you get the hang of it, it's easy. | | | |

| | Do you make much money selling blankets? I have heard that it is not very profitable after you consider the cost of yarn and the time it takes to crochet a blanket. Kelly | | | | | | |

| | Hi, Thank you for your interest, but basicly crocheting is my hobby I crochet every chance I get so all of a sudden I have accumlated all these blankets that I don't know what to do with and how many times can you give family & friends blankets for christmas? So I set up a store on Etsy and just see who buys I also did and E-Bay store so if a sale comes along I am greatful but it wont pay the bills thats for sure just a part-time thing but good question you have I just do it for fun & and little cash | | | |

| | I used to crochet but when I downsized my crafts I put that away. I didn't totally give up on it because someday I might go back to doing it....but both of my daughters and my daughter-in-law crochet.....I know it takes alot of time to do a project with a pattern. But good for you for selling your blankets! | | | | | | |

| | I visited your site on Etsy ... your blankets are nice! I have been crocheting for years! It's very relaxing and goes fast. You can have a project finished in no time! I like to do the granny square because it's easy to take a long and not as cumbersome as working on a whole blanket at one time. I have made rugs, pillows, placemats, potholders, toys, purses, hats, scarfs, shawls, blankets, slippers, coasters, trivets, and even jewelry. It's so much fun! =) | | | | | | |

| | I don't think its a lost art but I have been ntold that by other people it seems to me if your mom or grandmom did crocheting then usually it is followed by one of the children like my sister she knows how to crochet but very rare does she do it as she doesn't have a lot of time I think that is the case with a lot of people even me I put it down for 2 1/2 yrs then picked it up again well have a good day | | | |

| | I hear that all the time from people when I'm working on a blanket or something... I LOVE to crochet, and taught my friend how to make a granny square blanket, because she could never get her gauge right on any other stitch, lol. Now her blanket fits a full size bed and looks amazing. My kids love that every year they get to pick out yarn and they get a new blanket :) I think it's awesome that you sell your blankets. I have tried but never was able to make any money with it. I also learned very young to crochet and love to do all the fancy stitches :) I think crochet is an amazing art, it's too bad people don't have time for it anymore. | | | | | | |

| | I can't find your work on Etsy. Can you send me a link? I crochet. Not continuously, but the last thing I made was a christmas stocking. Last year I made a ton of wash cloths and scrubbies for gifts and the year before, I made a bunch of slippers. I guess I like crocheting for gifts. I do the wash cloths and scrubbies when we travel - they are a good car craft. Oh - I forgot - I crocheted a bunch of those fuzzy flip flops this summer. My daughters and their friends love them. I can find the eyelash yarn at our dollar store and when I do, I buy a ton of it. | | | | | | |

| | I've crocheted since I was little. I then even taught my sons how to crochet when they were little. It's amazing how much they loved it. I guess I likened it to boy scout knot making on steroids. LOL It's awesome that you have sent your blankets to so many different places in the world. How fun! My Grandma once made all her grandkids an afghan as a sort of keepsake. Now that I have my first grandbaby on the way, I plan to do the same thing. I'm also going to crochet one for my hubby for Christmas. Looking for a nice 'manly' pattern. LOL | | | | | | |
