Our Australian Government would do nothing and it was not till ex Veterans went to South Vietnam on their OWN MONEY did the Government of the day come good. I am HAPPY to say I beleive we have found our last MATE (MIA) This part of history may be closed and wrinten about. I give to you the lead on the story. HICCUP/ Grave of Aussie digger found in Vietnam 23:03 AEST Fri Aug 29 2008 16 hours 20 minutes ago A search team believes it has found the grave of the last remaining Australian digger unaccounted for after the Vietnam War. Special Air Services Regiment (SASR) soldier Private David Fisher fell from a rope suspended by a helicopter over thick jungle in southern Vietnam in 1969. His patrol was being "hot extracted" by a RAAF helicopter at the time and despite an extensive search of the rough terrain, Private Fisher was lost without trace. Federal Minister for Defence, Science and Personnel Warren Snowden said an investigation team had uncovered an identification tag and bones after pinpointing a burial area in the Cam My region of Vietnam. "An identification tag inscribed with Private Fisher's details has been found at the site," Mr Snowden said in a statement. "This is an extraordinary discovery that together with the small quantity of bones recovered in the dig, strongly suggests we have located the grave of Private Fisher and we wait with some confidence for formal identification by Australian and Vietnamese forensic specialists." He said the investigation team had carried out research, including interviews with locals and Vietnamese veterans earlier this year, before a full scale archaeological dig was undertaken last week. The remains will be transported to Hanoi for further forensic tests before being released to the Australian government for repatriation to Australia. Mr Snowden said the Australian investigation team had received assistance from Vietnamese authorities in locating the fallen soldier. http://news.ninemsn.com.a... | | | | | |

| | Yes it is wonderful that the body of the last Aussie digger from the Vietnam conflict is now home at long last. However there are still 2 Aussie RAAF men whose bodies have not been located and I hope that the search continues for them too. For the families it is a wonderful thing that they can now lay their loved one to rest after such a long time. As you said, the government did nothing at all and it was other Vietnam veterans, primarily, who provided the funding plus spent their own time and energy in locating the missing men. All governments - of all political persuasions - have been a disgrace when it comes to bringing back our service personnel who paid the supreme sacrifice for our country. The one thing I noticed was that government politicians (whichever one is in power at the time) are there when the bodies have been returned home, making speeches and getting their photos taken. That is as much a disgrace as their lack of willingness to locate our men and have them returned home, so they can be laid to rest in or soil. In fact I find the politicians actions offensive. | | | | | | |
