Our first family holiday

September 1, 2008 3:10pm CST
Me, my partner and four of our children have just returned from our first family holiday. My partner has not been on holiday since he was eleven, as when he has gone away he has always ended up working. We decided to stay in the UK and went to the Isle of wight. It was my fifth time going there as I love it so much. It was the second time for three of my children but only my 15 year old remembers the last time as the other two were too young to remember. We stayed in a caravan park. They had teamstars there who were really friendly and great with the children. There was clubs for all the children, the 0-4s,5-11s,and the 12-17s. The three youngest enjoyed the clubs. But my 15 year old decided that the club wasn't for him but he still had a good time. There was entertainment every night. My 11 year old daughter took part in the karaoke, she didn't win but I think she had alot of guts to get up on stage and sing. Once her nerves settled she done well and she has a lovely voice. Me and my partner took part in the darts and we ended up playing each other in the final, which he won. He won a free family holiday as he has to go back to play in the park's finals at the end of the month. We had alot of fun building sandcastles on the beach and me, my daughter and my two year old son went paddling in the sea. There was so much to do on the island that a week was not enough time to do it in. We are hoping to go back next year for a fortnight. The only downside was that my two year old son was travel sick on the way there and on the way back. Also my eldest son, whom is 16 wasn't there to share it with us as he chose to stay at home. Do you remember your first family holiday? Did you enjoy it? Or was it a disaster?

I am really pleased that you enjoyed your first family holiday so very much indeed. It is a shame that your husband hadn't been on holiday since he was eleven years old some people can be too busy at work I know. I love the Isle of Wight and have been there many times. Most of all I remember taking my oldest son there youth hosteling. I like the pretty coastline and as a child I adored it at Black Gang Chine. I think that caravaning was a good type of accommodation for you because your family is large. It was excellent that there were children's clubs and I can imagine that a 15 year old doesn't enjoy that sort of thing as much as your younger children. It most have been funny when you and your partner both ended up in the darts final. I hope that you will go back there again in the near future because you had such a wonderful time. My younger nephew gets travel sick in cars too. Last year we had a holiday in Portugal and my younger son was four months old. We traveled to three different locations and stayed in locally owned guest houses. We went around on trains once we had arrived into Faro airport by plane. Beautiful Lisbon was the highlight of our holiday. This year I just me took my younger son aged thirteen months to the Baltic Countries. We had a lovely time and the highlight of our holiday was gorgeous Vilnius. I always enjoy my traveling but travel with a baby is a bit challenging.

It is vey challenging travelling with a baby. My two year old was great tho he took it all in his stride and did not make a fuss about being sick. I also love Black Gang Chine we didn't manage to get there this time but plan to go in the future. It such a shame that it is slowly crumbling into the sea alot of it has been lost over the years because of it. Thank you for your response.

Hi Our first family holiday after the birth of my first son was when he was 15 months old. We took him from the UK to South Africa for a 4 week holiday in the sun, and to visit his grandparents. We had a great time and he travelled really well. The next family holiday - which in a sense was also a first one, was when our twins were about a year old and our older son was just 3. We went to Spain on a timeshare week - one of those free weeks that you win. It was really good and apart from the weather was a huge success. Spain, where it never rains ... well, the week we were there we had torrential rain for 3 days! We took the kids to the Zoo and the beach and spent time in the pool. A wonderful relaxing time for all of us. Violetdreams

Sounds like you had a good time. I would love to visit South Africa its looks so nice when you see it on the telly. Typical i think the weather must have followed you to Spain. But at least you had a great time and didn't let the weather ruin it for you. We were lucky we had only one morning of rain and then it was warm for the rest of the week but not too hot. Thank you for your response.
