Transgender On America's Next Top Model. |
|
I confess to being a fan of the Top Model programs on television. A few nights ago, I watched Canada's next top Model, and then tonight, I caught the premiere of America's next Top Model.
What really surprised me tonight is that one of the girls, called isis, is a pre-op transgender. Isis was born a male, but always felt that she was a female stuck in a male body. So she made the choice to become a woman, though she hasn't had the full gender change surgery yet. Tyra asked her when she wanted to have the surgery, to which she replied that if she could have it done right away, she would.
Some of the other girls who made it through said that it freaked them out to think that Isis had something "different down there" and that if she were to walk down the street of their hometown, she'd be shot. I think this is a bit shallow to be honest. In a show such as Top Model, it's not whats down there that counts.
I personally cannot think of a better example that America's Next Top Model could send to the viewing audience that you don't have to be the typical girl next door good looking to be on the show, or to be a model or anything else you choose. Being transgender does not mean that you should not have the same rights as anyone else. Isis is a beautiful woman and is very open about the fact that she was born a man.
So, what are your thoughts on this? Should Isis be able to be on a show such as Top Model, despite being a pre-op transgender, or do you believe that it's strictly a show for women who were born women?

It is cool, and a great way to set an example. Making it through to being on of the girls in the house to go through the highs and lows of modeling I think is wonderful.
It's sad that a lot of people do still hold that narrow minded view that she's not "natural" so to speak, and I only hope that the other girls in the house learn to accept her for who she is, and not what she has between her legs.
Having someone like her lead the way can only be a good thing. I too, am hoping she wins.

She is proud of who she is, and isn't ashamed of herself. I think it sends a great message to all young girls out there. That you don't need to be ashamed of who you are, and that you should reach for your dreams, no matter what obstacle may stand in your way. I don't think it matters if she is transgender. She is comfortable with her self, and cheeres to americas next top model for being open minded.

angelwhispers30 (1907) | 1 year ago | I totally agree with you. I could not have put it any better myself.
Showing everyone that they're being open minded and that you don't have to be that stereotypical good looking all natural girl is setting a great example for so many youngsters and teens out there.
Isis inspired me tonight. Showing that she is who she is and that she isn't scared to reach for her dreams, despite the obstacles that she knows she will be facing in the coming weeks will be an inspiration to so many.
I say Good Luck to her. She deserves to be there!

But could you tell me why you think that a transgender shouldn't have the same opportunities as the other girls in the house? I mean, she's not trying to be a drag queen, and she is actually very beautiful.

I think to me it actually does not bother me, I mean there are some seriously lovely looking transgenders about and it is hard to spot it on some of them. But I also see that for some it could be a problem. Maybe they should compromise if it is a bit of a problem and do a next top transgender model, then no one could feel that it was unfair or freaky. Plus I bet that it would be a really good show!!

angelwhispers30 (1907) | 1 year ago | There are some seriously lovely transgenders about, and yes, it CAN be hard to spot. When I first saw Isis, I thought she was all female. I wouldn't have guessed had they not told us.
I see what you mean saying that for some it could be a problem, but I don't get why trangenders should have to compromise. If they were forced to compromise and have their own show, then where does it stop you know? When do people start turning around and saying things like "She can't be on the show because her legs are too hairy" and stuff.
A show such as Top Model isn't, and shouldn't be about what a model has between her legs.

5. mummymo (11642) | 1 year ago | Well mini angel I don't watch the show but I do know what it is about! I cannot think of any reason why Isis should not be on the show - my heart breaks for those who do not fit into a certain nook in society and are made to feel less than human, something that should be hidden away and not come into contact with other 'normal' people! I think the girls who said that should hang their heads in shame for being hte bigoted and shallow people they showed themselves as. What is someone had been born a hermaphrodite and had had that extra piece of equipment as well as female parts? Or do they think only people like themselves should be allowed to exist? xxxx

angelwhispers30 (1907) | 1 year ago | I hear ya mummymo and totally agree with you. Haven't seen you around in a while btw!)
The girls who are judging Isis now are going to be the ones who will end up being voted off, because their views will eventually compromise their values and what they're willing to do.
I kind of get the feeling that they feel that the show should be strictly for women who were BORN women, which is sad.

I totally agree with you and the girls who have a problem with Isis will eventually realise that the problem is THEIR problem - not hers! xxxx

6. vanities (8842) | 1 year ago | personally i guess no...i mean a transgender should not be allowed to be mixed with the other female models ..im conservative type kind of thing..and i abhor those males who done something to alter their genders...i myself believe that our body is the temple of God and we must not change thru surgery or whatever...however i guess the world now is changing into somewhat?..well i really dont want to spell it out...

angelwhispers30 (1907) | 1 year ago | Well, Isis is a pre-op transgender, though I understand that she's had some hormone treatments so her body starts to develop, but yes, she's still technically a male.
However, I don't see why she should not be allowed the same opportunities as the other girls. She obviously made it onto the show so she has something going for her at least, and the judges were very impressed with her photos this week.
The show isn't about what a model has between her legs, and as much as I respect anyone's right to their own views, letting the thought of what Isis has between her legs color their opinion of her is something I find sad of the other models. She's already proven that she's just as good as they are.

7. sudalunts (4247) | 1 year ago | I heard about this before the show aired, and was anxious to watch it last night. I think Isis, has just as much a chance to become America's next top model as the other girls. Nature is strange, and she can not help what has happened to her. She has what it takes, and she performed very well last night. The other girls just want to have something to talk about. Isis, is not interested in them, and the immature comments shows how ignorant they are. I wish her well, and hope that she goes far on the show. I thank she is very attractive, and I heard one of the girls call her him. This should be a very interesting season, and I do not want to miss any episodes.

angelwhispers30 (1907) | 1 year ago | I agree with you. Isis did extremely well with her photo shoot this week and I was highly impressed that she didn't let the other girls comments distract her or put her off in any way. It's easy for a transgender to feel "picked upon" so to speak.
I was sorry for her that some of the other girls made immature comments though. It seems even in today's world, people can't accept what is not the norm. I really hope Isis goes a long way, and I would love to see her win this competition. What a message that would send to everyone!

8. thesongwriter (104) | 1 year ago | if the person was to win would they be given a fair chance in the modeling world, would WOMEN around the WORLD be able to RELATE to the person as a covergirl, would covergirl be willing to have him/her on their cover, would the product they are advertising sell? (covergirl products are used all over the world not just in america, the company is fully aware of this,so will they be willing to take Isis on)
Personally I believe that the person was put on the show for the purpose of increasing audience, whether or not Isis would win, although unlikely,we'll have to wait and see.

angelwhispers30 (1907) | 1 year ago | Would WOMEN around the WORLD be able to RELATE to the person as a covergirl, would covergirl be willing to have him/her on their cover, would the product they are advertising sell?
These were some of the questions that the judges asked themselves, and their answer was yes. Isis is exotic looking and she is beautiful (though that's just my opinion) I think that if they had any doubts about this, Isis wouldn't have made it onto the show. And even now, I still fully believe that she's capable of winning.
As for your question regarding how she is referred to. Technically, she's still male because she hasn't had surgery to perform the change yet, though she's had the hormone treatments so that she develops a female body.
I wasn't sure whether she would be classified as a male, and so I asked my partner. He said that even when she's had the change, genetics will dictate that she is a male, because she won't have the female reproductive system, but I think she would be referred to as a "she". She will have all the outward appearance of being female, and she won't have the male organs between her legs.

thesongwriter (104) | 1 year ago | Is it true that on his identification card, her gender will still be male? That's why i keep wondering if she can make it in the fashion industry, i mean the fashion industry is so brutal. I really hope he is prepare to handle everything hope she has a strong support system cause she's gonna need it.

| 9. Yingwang (5) | 1 year ago | hi, i think a person should have rght to choose his gender .maybe this is person-right .but they can't do harm to the other people. we should respect them.and treat fairly.

|
angelwhispers30 (1907) | 1 year ago | I totally agree with you. If a person is not comfortable with what gender they are, and they feel they were born into the wrong body, then they should be able to choose whether to do anything about it or not.
They should be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as other people, but sadly, a bigoted and opinionated world won't allow that to happen. That's why I hope Isis wins the show. It would be a message of hope to other transgenders out there not to give up on their hopes and dreams.
