What do you think about the Confederate flag? Here is how McCain feels |
|
John McCain has had a long history with the Confederate flag, he has made many comments about it as well. Here is a list of some of his comments: What do you think?
1999 - Flying Confederate flag should be left to states (Sep 1999)
2000 - Confederate flag is a "symbol of heritage" (Jan 2000)
2000 - McCain called for the removal of the Confederate Battle flag from atop the South Carolina Satehouse. His said he his stance during the primary was a "sacrifice of principle for personal ambition".
2007 - Confederate flag on top of capitol was wrong, in front is ok. (May 2007)

At first I was glad that he called for the flag's removal and felt so strongly that it was offensive and a symbol of racism. But then...he suddenly said that was a symbol of heritage. Just because his previous remarks didn't play so well in the polls. It's even worse that you could totally tell from his face, body language and the was he sounded all scripted that he didn't mean it. And only reversed his position for the politics.
This really disappointed me.

It's not very likely nobody's ever pointed that out to him, so it's clearly a sign that hatred and oppression are just fine with him! Our poor country is very much at risk.

thegreatdebater (1081) | 1 year ago | Thanks for your response X. But, did you read the whole post, and see where he came back a year later and said he was wrong, and he said that to help his campaign. So what else is he saying today that he doesn't believe in, just to get elected, like he did on the flag. That is the questions we need to ask ourselfs.

However, even though he may find it to be a symbol hatred and rascism doesn't mean that other people in America do as well which, if this is the free country in which he is running for, he has to recognize and treat them with respect. I could see maybe why he wouldn't want the flag to be flown from on top of the SC state building. If the flag is on top of the building it could give an onlooker the impression of that being what the state stood for rather than having the flag flown from in front of the building where the flag would be acknowledged SC heritage. Being in front of the building could make the statement, the confederacy is a part of our heritage but it is not our entire heritage

5. lilwonders123 (1252) | 1 year ago | As a southern I feel the flag means more than racism. It is about history and heritage and not all of it good. When I see it I think of states rights and slavery. I strongly agree with states rights, but think slavery was horrible. It serves to remind us all that just because a large group of people thought something was exceptable does not mean it is. The civil war was about more than slavery. And much was lost and gained during that war. I can understand the rebel jack offending some people. I know here in south carolina we fly "the stars and bars" our state capital. Which was the souths "official flag". They only used the rebel jack during battles due to confusion caused when the flags on each side were so simular. I feel each state should decide on their own if they want to fly the flag. But in the end you need to remember Americans died under both flags. All of them were someone's child or loved one. All died doing what they thought was right.

6. CherylsPearls (1024) | 1 year ago | McCain changes with the political wind. The only reason he has changed his mind about the Confederate flag is because it's not politically advantageous for him. He changes his mind on many other subjects and issues for the same reason.
If he changed his mind because of new information, that would be one thing. I could understand that. I don't think there has been any new information on the Confederate flag for the last one-hundred years, though.
Speaking of the Confederate flag, being Southern, I do see some people's argument about displaying it. By that, I mean I understand their passion about it. The problem is, that the South has allowed the KKK and other hate groups to use our flag in representation of themselves. I feel the same way about the Christian cross.
After years and years of this display, when I see the Confederate flag, I think of these groups. Not long ago, I noticed a house up the road, actually in the next small town, with a huge Confederate flag in the window. The population of this town is only something like 750 people. I thought they were just rednecks. No, I was on the Southern Povery Law Center site when I decided to look up "hate groups" in my area. I was quite surprised to find that this house was home to the "Carolina Skinhead Alliance." Shocked is what I was. I had no idea.
And for that reason, I think the Confederate flag should never be flown again. As proud as I am to be Southern, I do not want to be associated with any of these hatemongers. Ever!

8. newtondak (2149) | 1 year ago | I agree that the Confederate Flag is a part of some people's heritage and that, if they choose, they should be able to fly the flag. The laws of our country, however, indicated that the American Flag should always been flown in a position superior to any other flags being flow at the same time. His comments are consistent with that.

thegreatdebater (1081) | 1 year ago | Which comment, the first one or the second one? If this was a democrat saying this, they would call it a flip flop, but being a republican, they say he changed his mind.
| |
|
|
newtondak (2149) | 1 year ago | I don't see it as a flip-flop; he did not say that it should not be flown at all - he said that it should not be flown on top of the capitol, which it should not - that would be putting the Confederate Flag in a position equal to that of the American Flag.
| |
|
|
thegreatdebater (1081) | 1 year ago | If you look at the timeline you will see that he first said it should be up to the states to decide that. Then he said that it shouldn't be flown on top of the capital. If he felt that it shouldn't have been flown on the top of the capital then why didn't he say that in the first place. He also said that his 1999 statement was "sacrifice of principle for personal ambition." This means that his 1999 statement was purely poltical, and he didn't support it in 2000. That, is a flip flop, and he did the rarest of rare thing for a politican: He admitted it.

9. ArsonCuff (2715) | 1 year ago | The Confederate flag is a heritage symbol for many. Just because those people were pro-slavery, the flag itself was not designed to be a racist thing. If people wish to embrace their ancestors than so be it.

10. sirnose (1027) | 1 year ago | I think that the Confederate Flag belongs in a museum for all to see how the Southern States thought about salvery and how they wanted to perserve it for future generations...If it hadn't been for the Civil War and the North winning the war the South would probably still be lagging far behind the rest of the country. As for John McCain that's why some say that he's to old to be Commamder-in-Chief with such outdated notions i see why.
