A gas war??

I have said for some time what we need is a good gas war to bring the price of gasoline down. Looks like we may have a small one going on in this area. One station is advertising their gasoline for $3.22 a gallon. That's about 30 cents cheaper than it is at other outlets in this area. The oil company had to cut their price to the dealer of they couldn't sell it that cheap. The most a station makes per gallon is less than 5 cents per gallon. Someone on the national news the other night said gasoline sales were down a good bit. They said people were cutting down on their driving and buying less of it. Maybe the oil companies have finally gone too far and pushed the American people a little two hard. If we can get a gas war started at the upper level you will see the price drop like a rock.

I remember those gas wars of yesteryear. They were fun to watch and keep track of. All those gas stations were vying for your business. You don't see that much any more and the fact that you are seeing one in your area, I would say, is quite rare. Oh you get a token battle once in a while, but nothing very serious. What's the cheapest you've ever seen gas come down? I saw one at .18 cents back in the dark ages one time. Good discussion.

This is the only thing even close to a gas war that I have seen in this area in many years. They were big in this area in the mid 50's to mid 60's. In the early 60's I sold many a gallon for 19.9 cents a gallon. About 18.9 cents is the lowest I have seen it too and this was in the mid to late 50's. Back then there was a service station on every corner and very tough competition. Back then you didn't make enough off gasoline to pay you to pump it but you could use it to draw people in and make pretty good off your other services. Most service station owners lived off the oil sales, oil changes and grease jobs, fixing flats and selling new and used tires. That's where the money was.

Those were the days. A dollar could buy a lot then. However, you didn't make very many of them either. I remember when .75 an hour was not too bad for a beginning wage. Oh well, those days are gone. Now it's time to adjust.

I have filled many a gas tank with less than $5 worth of gasoline. Like you say I was working for about $.75 an hour then too.
