My favourite hobby is over:( |
|
Apart from playing guitar my favourite thing to do is feed swans (and ducks when there's some in the river). I was reading up on the net about swans and apparently white bread is very bad for them so I decided to feed them something else. I bought some porridge oats to feed them but they weren't interested. I then bought some fresh lettuce but they didn't want that either. All the swans swam towards me but they went away as soon as they discovered I didn't have bread. Although I love feeding them, my conscience won't let me give them bread now that I've read it's bad for them. As they're not interested in any other food I guess I'll just have to stop feeding them. Sadly that was the only nice thing to do in this crappy town. I loved the company of the swans and ducks, they're better company than most people around here. I guess I'll either have to go back to wandering aimlessly around the town like I used to or just staying at home all day. I just felt like ranting.

2. savmot (214) | 1 year ago | People say that white bread is bad for ducks, but they seem to like it, and there's never a ton of dead ducks in the river at the back of my house, and they get fed plenty of white bread. You could always by brown bread if it concerns you...

3. chej18 (453) | 1 year ago | Hi there,
Thats very interesting hobby you got..I tried to picture it in my mind and i find it so peaceful. We have also small manmade lake at the back of our apartment and mostly in the summer lots of birds, ducks and swans. And i feed them also but then brown bread i dont know if that allowed to feed them but i gave it anyway coz they like it to much..I think it will be better to give that to them than to starved them to death..Specially in the winter they cant find much food so we help them, we give them bread and i hanged some peanut outside the house in the garden..Try to give the swans small fishes mybe they like it.

crispeater (1461) | 1 year ago | I don't think they'd starve. They usually eat the plants that are around the river. I think they like the bread because it makes a change from plants. That's probably why they didn't like the lettuce, it just looked like a bunch of leaves floating on the river. Maybe I'll feed them again during the winter when there's no one else feeding them. It's good that you were feeding the birds brown bread. It's a lot better than white bread.

| 6. hrjustin (97) | 1 year ago | Ive never heard that before I always thought it was good for them and they love it so much. I was wondering if you could buy bird seed or something else that would be good for them that would float on the water like bread. Other then that you could always spend more time here on mylot and make a little more extra money while you partake in the many great discussions. Speaking of which good post I had no idea white bread was bad for birds.

crispeater (1461) | 1 year ago | They do love bread. Apparently it has no nutritional value though and it stops them eating healthy things like grass and plants. I'm not sure if they'd like bird seed but it might be worth a try.

7. darkjedi (4380) | 1 year ago | Ive never heard that before, and like others have said you dont find a lot of dead ducks and swans around because of it. Its probably like stuff with us, might not be good but as long as thats not the only thing you eat it wont bother you that much. They dont just eat that so it wont affect them, you should go back to feeding them like you used to and not worry about it.

crispeater (1461) | 1 year ago | I read that if they eat too much bread they get full and eat less grass and plants. Maybe I should just feed them a little less than I have been.

8. MSV1313 (2243) | 1 year ago | While I don't have swans here, I have been feeding the ducks and geese that come to my swamp for over a decade. The reason they don't recommend bread is because if they eat it dry and then swallow water, the bread can swell and get stuck in their throats, If you break the bread up very small and throw it in the water it should be OK. But I feed my feathered friends bird seed and cracked corn. They LOVE the cracked corn and I have had many generations of happy ducks and geese who show me their babies every spring and I get to watch them grow up and take their first flights. You do NOT have to give up your peasant time with them! They will like the cracked corn (some even eat it in whole kernels, but the cracked kind is easier) and/or wild bird seed. You have NOT been harming your swans, it's OK!

crispeater (1461) | 1 year ago | Most of the bread I gave them landed in the water. When I did feed them on land they didn't drink any water immediately afterwards so I guess I didn't do them any harm. I did also read that bread has no nutritional value and fills them up so they eat less healthy foods like plants and grass. I'm not sure how true it is but I'd hate to do any harm to them. They're so used to bread that they turn their noses (or bills) up at anything else. I might try bird seed, but would it float in water?
| |
|
|
MSV1313 (2243) | 1 year ago | It's been my experience that most bird seed and cracked corn float, and the stuff that sinks is eaten as well, they know how to dunk their heads in the water for food below the surface. I really don't think you have harmed your swans, if all else fails, you can try multigrain or whole wheat bread. The swans were most likely eating other food when you aren't around, and see your stuff as a "treat".
| |
|
|
crispeater (1461) | 1 year ago | Another thing that concerns me that I didn't mention is there's now a lot of ducks in the river. Until recently there was just swans in that area of the river . I've seen the swans being aggressive and chasing the ducks away from the bread. I've read that this can have terrible consequences. This makes me think that feeding them may not be a good idea.

9. twoey68 (9610) | 1 year ago | What about a different kind of bread? Or maybe crackers? If you really like to do it and they like when you do it, by all means try to find a happy medium. I wish I lived somewhere that I could do something like that.

MSV1313 (2243) | 1 year ago | They will also enjoy other invertebrates such as crayfish, but they can probably find those on their own, and you would not want to add a live creature to the water that is not native to the river there, or you can accidentally screw up the ecosystem (if the birds don't eat them).
| |
|
|
crispeater (1461) | 1 year ago | That's true MSV1313. I don't think I'd really like to feed animals or crustaceans to other animals anyway. I know it's nature, but I'd rather leave that to the swans to do for themselves.
