What are some of your favorite hymns? |
|
Our church is really into the new praise and worship music. I'm a part of the praise team and I am a big fan of contemporary Christian music too. But 2 weeks ago my church had an old-fashioned hymn sing! I think I was a kid the last time I went to one. We sang "victory in Jesus", "Blessed Assurance", "When we all get to heaven", "It will be worth it all (when we see Jesus)"and so many more. The men in the congregation were especially in rare form and occasionally we would split the verses with the women singing one verse and the men the next. What a way to worship and what a blessing to all who attended. What are some of your favorite old hymns? Do you have any stories associated with them that you can share?

However, I like praise songs as well. "Shout to the Lord." "As the Deer," In the Presence of Jehovah," and "I Am the God Who Healeth Thee" are some of my favorites. I prefer a mix of hymns and worship/praise songs that lead the congregation into an attitude of listening for the message from God through the preacher or priest.

rocketj1 (2114) | 10 months ago | Thank you retiredrdh, Our church has two services. Our first service is in our original sanctuary and features a mix of praise and worship and hymns with acoustic/piano/organ accompaniment. Our second service is in our gymnasium/auditorium (we need the space) and is strictly contemporary. I sing with that praise team (guitars, keyboards, and drums). I love all music and that's why it was nice for me to hear the old hymns again!

2. redkathy (1740) | 10 months ago | My favorite old time hymn is How Great Thou Art. My uncle, God rest his soul, sang Ave Maria, his favorite hymn, at my cousins wedding. He died a year later. The wedding was in another state and I couldn't attend however my mother had a video of the song that I got to view after he passed away. He sang it beautifully.

3. salonga (4304) | 10 months ago | Oh I love hymns. Victory in Jesus in a top favorite in our church. Blessed Assurance is very meaningful. It was composed by the great Fanny Crosby, the blind hymn writer and poetess. In fact that same words were written in her tomb. "Aunt Fanny... Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine." I was so touched when I read about her story and from then on she became my favorite and all her songs have been more meaningful to me. Some of her hymns that I like are " My Savior First of All", "Tell me the Story of Jesus", "There's a cry from 'Macedonia," "I feel like singing all the time," "Never be afraid to speak for Jesus," "Lord, at Thy mercy seat," "Jesus the water of life will give," "'Give,' said the little stream," "We are marching on with shield and banner bright," "Pass me not, O gentle Saviour," "Jesus, keep me near the cross," "Rescue the Perishing," "Sing with a tuneful spirit," "Praise Him, praise Him," "To the work, to the work," "The Bright Forever," "Close to Thee," "Blessed Homeland", "Thy Word is a lamp to my feet, O Lord," "Hast thou trimmed thy lamp, my brother?" "Never say goodbye" and my top favorite is "Saved by Grace". I want to share the lyrics here: Saved by Grace ---------------- Some day the silver cord will break, And I no more as now shall sing; But, oh, the joy when I shall wake Within the palace of the King! Refrain: And I shall see Him face to face, And tell the story—Saved by grace. Some day my earthly house will fall; I cannot tell how soon ’twill be; But this I know—my All in All Has now a place in heav’n for me. Some day, when fades the golden sun Beneath the rosy tinted west, My blessed Lord will say, “Well done!” And I shall enter into rest. Some day: till then I’ll watch and wait, My lamp all trimmed and burning bright, That when my Savior opes the gate, My soul to Him may take its flight. God bless!

rocketj1 (2114) | 10 months ago | I TOO read a biography of Fannie Crosby and was amazed to find out that she wrote literally hundreds of hymns! She went thru so much in her life and yet she was always so hopeful. God really used her talents for his glory!

5. fjaril (3549) | 10 months ago | HI rocketjl As far as hymns go, I think this should qualify. It has been sung by Josh Groban and Westlife and is very spirtually moving. A truly beautiful song and I will look for a link so you can listen to it too, I am having such problems with internet connections here,, grrr so will get back to you later. The lyrics When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary; When troubles come and my heart burdened be; Then, I am still and wait here in the silence, Until you come and sit awhile with me. You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas; I am strong, when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas; I am strong, when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up

rocketj1 (2114) | 10 months ago | What I am really sad about is that this current generation will probably not even recognize any of the songs we are talking about. My kids don't sing anything like them in Sunday School. All the stuff I sang as a kid, they don't even know. That's why I had our daughter come with us to the hymn sing. She actually enjoyed herself although she DID say that she only knew one song. The current trend that I see which might alleviate this, is that many old songs are now played on the radio with a more comtemporary style. This may be the only way many of these kids will hear these songs.

9. fasttalker (2143) | 10 months ago | Oh wow there are so many I'm not sure I can go with a favorite. Here goes my list: What A Day that Will Be, In The Sweet Forever, I'd Rather Be An Old TIme Christian, Standing On The Promises, Looking For A City I could go on an on. Another great worship is signing songs if you do a lot of contemporary. And the youth catches on to this amazingly fast. We do a combination of both but we just had our annual homecoming service this Sunday so all of these are fresh on my mind! God Bless!

10. cher913 (11390) | 10 months ago | we have a pretty contemporary worship service so we dont sing a whole lot of hymns (we sing mostly hillsong) but there are a few older hymns that i like and most of these hymns have been around for 100 years or more! my dad has a book on little short stories about the authors and the circumstances they were in when they wrote their particular hymn - facinating reading!

rocketj1 (2114) | 10 months ago | I have read one of those books about the hymns. When you see the inspiration behind the songs you can understand why so many of them have stood the test of time.
