Word Origins | | | | Did you ever wonder where words comes from? What did they originally mean? The study of word origins is etymology and it's my passion. I find it extremely interesting. Here are some everyday words in English, and the words they derived from: 'Hysteria' comes from the Greek 'hyster' meaning 'womb'. 'Allegory' comes from the Greek 'allos' meaning 'other'. 'Elite' comes from the Latin 'elire' meaning 'to choose'. 'Hazard' comes from the Arabic 'al zahr' meaning 'the dice'. 'Silly' comes from the German 'selig' meaning 'happy'. Both 'sugar' and 'candy' come from the sanskrit 'sarkara' meaning 'grit'. 'Incentive' comes from the Latin 'incanere' meaning 'to sing to'. 'Nice' comes from the Latin 'nescius' meanig 'ignorant'. 'Idea', 'idol' and 'ideal' all come from the Latin ''idein' meaning 'to see'. Rhubarb is named after the Volga River. In Greek, the name of the Volga is Rha, and barb means "uncultivated." Rhubarb is thus a wild plant that grows along the Volga. 'Toboggan' is derived from the Algonquin language and loosely meant 'instrument with which to drag a cord'. The Dalmatian dog is named for the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia, where it is believed to have been originally bred. Beets reminded early cooks of a bleeding animal when they cut them open, so they started calling them "beets." This was derived from the French word 'bête', meaning "beast." The ‘v’ in the name of a court case does not stand for ‘versus’, but for ‘and’ (in civil proceedings) or ‘against’ (in criminal proceedings). According to one source, the Los Angeles Dodgers coined the term "high five." Outfielder Glenn Burke is credited with originating it in 1977. The word "toady" originally referred to a magician's assistant who literally ate toads a part of the show. Toads were once thought to be poisonous; when the "toady" recovered from eating one of them it was considered an indication of the magician's power. It is the internet myth that the name of the popular Scottish game Golf stands for "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden." The word golf originates form medieval Scottish and Dutch dialects. Back in a day before the creation of dictionaries, there was no standardized spelling of any given word. So it is believed that word golf originates from Dutch word "kolf" or "kolve" which meant "club." Later on old Scots dialect transformed the word into "gouf" or "golve ." | | | | | | | | | | Arab Chat& Dating Free Arab Chat for Dating& Marriage. Join Free Now! Arabmatchmaking.com/lp/us

| | I write with my left hand. You idea makes perfect sense, about the origin. That's what I love most about etymology, it gives us a glimpse of how life was when the word was originated. | | | | | | | | | Arab Chat & Dating Free Arab Chat for Dating & Marriage. Join Free Now! | | I had a friend that was always trying to figure out words, when you were talking she would keep interrupting and tell you what the word meant if you used it incorectly or it's origins. It was both funny and annoying lol But since then i cant help wonder what all these random words came from like when i see the word "butterfly". Thanks for this, she'll love it xD | | | | | | | thelastwolf113 (2987)

| | I tell my husband when he is misprouncing or inaccurately using a word. I don't do it to anyone else. I'd sound like a pompous a$$, LOL. I only do it to my husband so he doesn't sound ignorant or illerate, which he's not. Our NYC accent makes us sound awful as it is, let's not make it worse, LOL I'm laughing because I have a character in my novel (unfinished) that is exactly like your friend, constantly telling people what words mean, and he is funny, informative and annoying all at once. Butterfly, now this is interesting. Middle English ~ butterflie from the Old English: buterfloege butere meaning butter + floege meaning fly Here's the interesting part: believed to come from the belief that butterflies or witches in the form of butteflies stole milk and butter. | | | | greyy21 (120)

| | I think most people here say "I done it" instead of "I've done it" or adding anyways into every sentence they can possibly think of and the annoying bit is then i start saying it too! Lol~ I think i like your character already xD Ooh! thank you! That's kinda funny when you think about it.. witches stealing butter. My da once told me as a joke that it used to be called "flutterby" and it got muddled up after a while. Yeah, I beieved him.. | | | | thelastwolf113 (2987)

| | Another one is the difference between 'seen' and 'saw'. People say, 'I seen that', when 'it should be I saw that' or 'I have seen that'. And the difference between 'don't' and 'doesn't'. Ex.: "it don't go that way", it should be 'it doesn't go that way'. Many contractions are used incorrectly. If the speaker would take the time to think of the full words instead of the contractions, it would make sense to them and they could choose the correct word. Ex.: 'it do not go that way' or 'it does not go that way', which sounds better? | | | | | | | Greek Looking For Greek? Find It Nearby With Local.com! Local.com | add comment | | | |

| | Hi friend! Lately, I have been missing discussions that are really informative. I am having this political apathy that your post sounds like a breath of fresh air. In my country, we have so many dialects and they came from whoever influenced a certain region. We have a province in the southern most where their dialect is almost spanish. We call them bastardized spanish. There are many words in our language that came from the spanish language because we were colonized for more than 300 years then. There are other influences. Our driver is called "tsuper" which came from the word chauffeur. | | | | | | | thelastwolf113 (2987)

| | It's interesting how you can trace words, sort of like a lineage. English is very interesting because we have words derived from many languages. | | | | | | | Arabic The Get Address, Phone, Background Info & More on Arabic The! USSearch.com | add comment | | | |
