My Son';s Ears  |

 Update time. Many of you expressed an interest in finding out what happened when we had R's ears checked. Well, we were at the doc's last Thursday and she checked his ears again. Apparently the wax has cleared for now and she was able to see the ear drum. Her comment to me was that his ears were full of (for want of a better word) 'snot' (her word). It seems than in adults the canal is angled and in effect, self drains. In kids the canal in question is horizontal and so doesn't drain.
Anyway, the upshot of it all is that I will be taking him for a hearing test this coming week and we will take it from there, but there is a good chance he will have to have grommets inserted to help clear the mucous. Hopefully one this is clear his hearing will be fine, and his speech will catch up with his sisters and we will be able to understand him more clearly.
Thankfully, it seems this is not as serious as we feared and he will be fine.

But I reckon your child has glue ear in which there is fluid and mucus in middle ear. If that is the case grommet can help in drying and letting the mucus out. many a times nasal intonation of voice occurs due to fluid in middle ear. that corrects itself when the fluid is drained out. so I along with you hope that your son gets relief soon. have a good day.

Not to go into great detail here, but my son is 3 and we have noticed that he seems to not hear that well (at times) and this is what made us take it further and get the doc to have a look to see what was wrong.
Funny, the doc didn't metion glue ear, but guess it makes sense from what you say of the treatment - that is what she said, that we needed to drain and dry out the area.
I don't know about a nasal intonation, but he seems slow to talk, and now that he is talking, it is very indistinct and blury. In fact it seemed that he was hearing muffled, and hence, his speech was also muffled.
Anyway, lets hope for the best. I will keep you all posted.

When my son was small around 5 or so, they took the adenoids out and his ears were fine after that operation.
I am happy to hear it is not as serious for your dear son.

| 3. jillhill (11840) | 1 year ago |  That's a step in the right direction! My granddaughter had tubes put in her ears and has had only one ear infection since! And she didn't need meds....just ear drops! Even adults can get a build up and suffer from hearing loss!

I don't have children, and I won't even try to compare my feelings about my dog to your feelings about your son. But I get upset enough when something is wrong with my dog, my concern about my own child would be more than quadruple of that, I'm sure. And I bet he'll feel better in the long run when it is all taken care of, no matter how annoying getting the procedure done might be.
