Foods and Plants that are toxic to your dog |
| |
| I heard that grapes were toxic to dogs, so while my husband was out running errands he stopped at the vets office and asked him. he said only the ones that are used to make raisins. Here's a list of additional foods and plants he gave us. This is by no means a complete list. I know it's long and I've been accused of being boring when I try to give information. Yes, it may be boring but it can save your dogs life. Please copy and keep where you can easily reach it. I have another list with more plants that are toxic to dogs. If you are interested I can send it in a PM. I don't want to pi$$ off the Boredom Police. * Indicates that a substances is especially dangerous and can be fatal. | | Hmmm. That's some list. I wonder about some of the things on there, though. Garlic, for instance. One vet told me to put garlic in our dog's food and it would repel fleas. Another vet had us feeding an old dog a mixture of ground meat, rice, peas and onions. Onions is also on this list. | | | | | | |

| | I was giving my dog garlic to repel fleas and ticks, now I'm not going to do it anymore. I didn't write the list, I got it from my vet. | | | |

| | I know there are lots of remedies for fleas and other problems that include garlic. But I have read and heard repeatedly that it is very dangerous to dogs. Recently I asked a vet about that and she said, even tho she knows it is in some products, she doesn't know why it is in there because it is definitely not safe and she would not give garlic to cats, dogs, or even to my pet rats. So I'll err on the side of safety, tho I wish the ASPCA poison center or someone would explain. I also was told all grapes -- anyway, how do you know which ones are used to make raisins? Onions also are definitely bad. These things, some of them, are like chocolate, in that even tho sometimes some dogs eat them with no problem, other dogs die from eating them. It all depends on how much they ingest, how big they are, what else was in their stomachs, etc... | | | |

| | He did say grapes/raisins cause kidney failure. I have another insect repellent but I'm loathe to use it on my dog, mix garlic with salad oil and spead it on his coat. I'm not making my dog's coat greasy. Skin needs to breath, I don't see this happening with the oil. I don't know what I'm going to do about insect repellents next year. More research in the meanwhile... | | | |

| | My husband came home a few days ago having read an article about this stuff. I never knew half of this stuff was bad for them. I think the only one I knew about was chocolate. Thanks for the list! | | | | | | |

| | I knew about chocolate and hear about grapes, but all this, no way! I'd rather be safe than sorry. I just assumed my dog can eat whatever I eat. | | | |

| | Also swallowing a penny is dangerous for dogs too. It is not simply a choking hazard but it has to do with the copper of the penny being toxic for them to swallow. Hope that helps too. | | | | | | |

| | I see now that morning glory is on the list too. I have also heard that morning glory can make humans sick too. I was advised that if I were to pull it, I should wear gloves. It can make you ill through cuts in your skin. | | | |

| | My dog likes vegetables and since he's so big I don't mind giving it to him as a snack rather than milk bones and treats. | | | |

| | Thanks for posting. Why don't you make a second post with your second list? I don't think any of us are bored about knowing what might hurt our dogs! | | | | | | |

| | OK, but some of it overlaps, same items on both lists. It is a C &P from the papers my vet gave us. | | | |

| | WHAT? My back-door neighbor has a cherry tree and some times the fruits fall on my backyard. My Golden Retriever loves them! | | | | | | |

| | We eat stuff that's not good for us, or even poisonous. How are dogs to know the difference? I was shocked when I first read the list because I have NO IDEA all these things were harmful to dogs. | | | |
