Today's Telemarketer... I Am NOT Happy! email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 98/100. katiedoubleu (2953)   ranked 168 out of 38,357 in life1 year ago

Okay, there must be a bajillion discussions about telemarketers, but this is mine, so I'm sure someone will have good answers for me. I'm not in a very good mood right now. angry

He spoke in broken English so I couldn't catch half of what he was saying but I got enough to know what he was doing. I wanted nothing of it and started with the politeness I generally try to use. I told him what he was offering didn't interest me. I told them we don't NEED them taking over the mortgage, everything' fine. Etc etc.

But he went on and ON with the schpiel. I'm not one to just hang up (but that's what I ended up doing) but I didn't know what to do. He kept saying he had an offer for me and he kept using my first name... ugh. I asked for a number at which to reach his supervisor and it didn't phase him, it was the same "We have an offer for you, haven't you been listening to the news?"

And then I mentioned that I'm on the no-call list and he's breaking the law by calling me. "But I have an offer for you!"

It was really creepy and I finally just hung up. I don't usually like to do that because then the other person has my number and I don't like that. I WISH I would have remembered what I read to do and just say "hold on a minute" and then leave the room for as long as it takes, but I didn't think of that. sad

Question is... what do YOU do? Hang up on them immediately? Or have you never had one so persistent? My experience is that after usually two statements of not having an interest, they thank me for my time and hang up... this was new to me.

I know many of you will say I stayed on much too long with him to begin with (but it was only like two minutes or less) and frankly I agree but I can't change that now. How long do YOU give them before your politeness leaves?

I really need to practice doing that. happy I know they have to make their salary but when it gets to where they won't take "no" I'm always stuck with what to do. Thanks for responding, cjgrooms!

I heard my neighbor respond to a telemarketer a few weeks ago, and I loved his response.

He said, "George, is that you? I'm so glad you called. I've been trying to reach you. Grandma isn't well and she's in the hospital and you have to get there soon. She's been asking about you. Oh, and that dog you left with us? You really need to come and pick her up. The FBI was here looking for you too. What have you done now?"

My neighbor just kept talking and talking and talking and the telemarketer could not get a word in...so he finally said, "You're crazy" and hung up. Mission accomplished.

I absolutely love this response! If I could think on my feet that fast to come up with something like that, I would have such great fun with those calls. hehe

I don't give them the time of day. We are on the not call list either. The people you do business with can still call you. I often just hang up. In your case I would just have said that I don't own a home, don't have a mortgage, am debt free, and wouldn't take his money if it would be for free, lol.

myLot reputation of 79/100. jonesy123 (3254)   ranked 2,689 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

Oh, btw, check if you are still on the do-not-call list. That list is not foolproof and numbers can drop off the list, happened to us. I wish they would add politicians to the do-not-call thing. My phones is ringing off the hook with their pleas to please vote for them. Hey, I can't vote, I'm just a permanent resident, lol!

myLot reputation of 98/100. katiedoubleu (2953)   ranked 168 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

I would have normally done that but the creepy part is that he already had the mortgage information... and my first name that isn't in the phone book... so it wasn't one of those calls. The mortgage was just turned over to another company, so I think the list of customers leaked out or something.

Of course now I'm thinking of dozens of things I should have said but... isn't hindsight a strange creature? shocked

myLot reputation of 79/100. jonesy123 (3254)   ranked 2,689 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

I don't think the information leaked. My guess is the new company hired a telemarketing company (hence the heavy accented English) to contact all of the debtors in order to have them refinance their mortgages/loans to have them conform to something they have in their system. In those cases I say, mail it to me, I don't discuss those things on the phone.

BTW, the amount of your mortgage, when you got it, what your monthly payments are, and if you are current... all of that is on your credit report. Banks which you have dealings with do have access to that information and may access it at any time in order to extend an offer to you.

OMG, every telemarketer that calls my house just keeps talking. I cant get a word in edge wise most of the time. Normally I say NO THANK YOU but they keep talking so I say, I'm hanging up on you now and I hang up. Right now we don't have that NO CALL LIST but it's coming into effect very soon here. I cant wait to go on it and the second one calls, I will say very loudly, to please take me off their list and then I'll hang up. Telemarketers are used to being hung up on. Everyone does so don't feel bad for hanging up on the guy.
The best thing I did to a telemarketer one day was try to sell them a car over the phone! They tried talking to me about God knows what and I said, well let me ask you something, I work for such in such car dealer and wanted to know if you would like to come in and test drive a new car. We have a 5 star crash rating and it has won the award for best in its class. So what day would you be available to come in for a test drive and we'll find a vehicle that fits you perfectly. By the time I was done my little speal, the telemarketer was speachless and said, have a nice night and hung up!! I just wish I could do that all the time but I usually don't have the time to do this so I just hang up on them.

myLot reputation of 98/100. katiedoubleu (2953)   ranked 168 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

Brilliant! Trying to sell a telemarketer a car. lol I am getting some really great ideas here. I think I'd much rather "play" a little when I have the time and not just hang up. lol

As soon as I know it's a telemarketer, I just hang up. Period. I don't apologize, say goodby or anything else. I know some people think that's impolite, but I didn't ask them to call, and they're usually interrupting something I'm doing, so I don't owe them anything.

myLot reputation of 98/100. katiedoubleu (2953)   ranked 168 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

That seems to be a good plan, yes. Actually today I didn't even say hello because a computer calls that VERY time of day every day... and I know that if someone is actually there, they'll say something to me. So I just picked up and was quiet. He waited pretty long and finally said hello. That would have been a good time for me to hang up when I heard it wasn't a family member or friend. Like DUH on me! rolleyes

I give them once chance to stop talking to me or else I hang up. I tell them that I'm not interested and that I am on the Do Not Call list which means they are breaking the law. If this does NOT stop them I hang up. I feel like they sometimes are paid more for the longer they keep you on the phone, regardless of whether or not you actually buy anything. I mean, that may not be the case but I feel like some places pay them in that way so I'm not going to give them the satisfaction of keeping me on the phone. You get one chance, and then you're done.

myLot reputation of 98/100. katiedoubleu (2953)   ranked 168 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

Hey highflyingxangel... I don't know if they're paid more for keeping you on the phone longer or not. I think this call probably wasn't even from within my own country so maybe he got yelled at for using so much long distance time on me. lol

What I don't get is do those people*truly* think that someone's going to just turn over financial information to ANYONE, let alone someone who's obviously from halfway around the world? Does anyone actually fall for this?

myLot reputation of 92/100. highflyingxangel (9005)   ranked 236 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

Sadly people do fall for these sorts of things and that's how people get scammed. Some people are just extremely gullible and just love to go for the next best thing that sounds like it's really going to help them out so they jump on it and get screwed over because they don't know any better and don't know how to say no.

Firstly you have a right to feel angry, he is invading your own private space, that's why I hate telephones, and some of my friends know that I will not answer the phone, unfortunately I have to have a landline because of the internet. I am not the most polite people on the phone and the fact that it's ringing in the first place puts me in a bad mood, it's disturbing my peace and it's demanding my attention, how dare it! I say no thank you straight away and end the call as soon as, if they don't take the message then I will put the phone down on them, I will then dial 1471 to find out what their number was, sadly most of the time, it says caller withheld their number, never had anyone ring again but as you said you don't know they have your details you don't know what they could be doing with it. If you are rude to them could they get revenge? Sinister I know, but not everyone is like that! Oh and to use your first name is far too personal for my liking, it's easy in hindsight for people to give you advice but when you are the phone and in the moment you can never remember everything you should do or say, only afterwards, but, by then as you know it's too late!

myLot reputation of 98/100. katiedoubleu (2953)   ranked 168 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

happy You understand exactly how I feel! Frankly I don't like when it rings either... not that phone. People I want to call have a cell number for me now, and when the other one rings, I just don't like it. Maybe I should just let it ring off the hook if it's that one... hey that's a good idea now that I think of it!

So if I ever call you, you'd be like really incredibly cranky and say things that would make me gasp and call you WolfieCrankyPants? shocked

Yes, the first name thing creeped me out... they don't usually do that, and no, I don't think those thoughts are sinister. It's exactly why I don't like just slamming down on them... they*do* have my number and this one repeated my address back to me. Ugh. Still has me a little freaked out.

myLot reputation of 98/100. katiedoubleu (2953)   ranked 168 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

Uh, not "repeated back"... I mean read it off to me in the beginning.

myLot reputation of 99/100. wolfie34 (13885)   ranked 83 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

I knew what you meant and I forgot to say that I use my mobile, although I still prefer people to text me and not ring me! I have an aversion to the phone! Oh and please get it right it's Mr Crankyboxers, I don't wear pants;0)

myLot reputation of 98/100. katiedoubleu (2953)   ranked 168 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

I was getting a good giggle out of the visuals this painted until I realized that I think maybe you'd call them "trousers" what I call "pants." Because I was going to ask if you don't wear pants, I couldn't imagine what do DID wear. Cultural difference, I think... you call pants what we in the US call... briefs, yes?

What a conversation! I was thinking you might wear a kilt or something if you don't wear "pants" wink

myLot reputation of 99/100. wolfie34 (13885)   ranked 83 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

That never crossed my mine, not that it would being pure and white as the driven snow, off course pants in America and trousers in the UK! That's why we call pants underpants ewwww, you made me laugh too, what we like eh? Get together and cause utter and total mayhem!

I don't 'let them in the door' so to speak.

As soon as I know it is a telemarketer, I say that I'm not interested, ask them to please take me off their list, say thank you, and hang up.

I don't do it in a nasty way, I just do it and I'm done with it. They don't take it personally unless someone is really rude, they just move on to the next call. I don't think any of them are talking about me in the break room.

myLot reputation of 98/100. katiedoubleu (2953)   ranked 168 out of 38,357 in life  1 year ago

Not letting THEM get a word in seems to be a good plan, yes... and not the other way around. At least if they're talking about you in the break room, you'll never find out about it, eh? happy

okay, here is the thing,

I was a telemarketer for 7 y ears.

they have to go on with the spiel or lose their jobs, it is as simple as that, and yes they have families to support as well and a thankless job, full of stress because as nice as you were there are people who are will yell scream swear at the threaten to kill them etc. And they still have to do their spiel.

With a good telemarketing firm, they have to make an offer 3 times, and get a no 3 times and then they can let you go,

so you might start a conversation

with

listen to me,

no, no, no, I have said no three times you are obligated to cut the call now

if that doesn't work, hang up, don't worry about feeling bad about it, we were so relieved when the people would hang up, it was release us from bugging them, for the sake of waiting for the three no's.

the other thing, you said you were on the do not call list,

he didn't answer he was supposed to,

demand to speak to his supervisor, and tell the supervisor this guy wasn't listening to you, and you are on the do not call list,

he might not want to let you through but demand in a very authoritative voice, he will either pass you through or get scared and hang up.

no if that doesn't work,

you see although the do not call list works for most companies it won't for all. Also once they know you are on the do not call list you will still get calls for up to 31 days, it takes that long to go through the system.

but there are unscrupulous companies that just does not give a rats behind,

there is not much you can do about them, unless you can trace the call.

If they leave the phone per chance, like you start 69 and find the number see if you can google it,

then if you get the goods, take it back to the Direct association Associate 1120 avenue of the americas in New York,New York 10036-6700

good luck

Thank you for the contact info. Fact is that I did it in the past, too. I knew when to say "thanks anyhow for your time" and hang up. This guy didn't stop. I didn't know about the three refusals thing. It's not part of what I was taught in training many moons ago, so that's good to know. Maybe the guy couldn't count because I said it about six times. sad Even then it was "don't you watch the news? Don't you know about the US economy?" THAT really riled me because by then he was talking down to me.

The supervisor... yep, I asked for that about a minute into the thing. "You want to talk to my supervisor?" "Yes, and I want the phone number of your company, too." Of course he gave me neither and went back to "I have an offer for you!"

i agree with everything your saying-i myself worked at a call center for 6 years where i was doing outbound for credit cards and i had to follow everything you just mentioned-and as far as the do not call list we were suppose to apologize and release the call immediately and dispo the call as customer on do not call list-the thing is some employees didn't dispo their calls properly either and it made it bad for the rest of us. thank god i am no longer there

normally, If it's a live person I say, "Would you like to buy some insurance" normally they just hang up, and we do not get another phone call from that particular telemarketer. If it's a recorded person, I click to speak to a live person, and then kindly ask to be removed, and they normally do it, and that does work, or if they provide the option to be removed by click 9-or 1-or something else, I/we do that.
