If your child was into Martial Arts would you help? |
|
My baby boy has been into martial arts for two months now and he enjoys it he is only seven and I have him in a school that I used to attend.
Now the problem is that I told the instuctor that I would prefer him being in class with her than me because I have been out of it for quite a few years and I would probably be to hard on him.
He asked me to sit in class with him and I said I would which I did and I naoticed certain things and know where he should be at.
Now the question I had been asked to come and help sometime to instruct the students but my way is the old way and because these are children you have to keep them attentive but from my observation there is alot they have to learn.
So my question is what you do we used to go to different sister schools and hold competitons and take the kids to tournaments which all this has been cut out also I would start teaching the adult classes.
As it being my friends school I see to many things that have been watered down and I have been out for at least 10 years. We are an old traditional scool in the Korean martial arts.
What would you do any advice.

At my children's school, a lot of parents take classes with their kids, and the higher belts help teach. With the smaller children, of course it must be a different approach than with older ones but it is something you'll get into with time. I don't do it myself, but I am involved in the organizational part, extra activities, fund raisers to travel to tournaments, etc., etc. I enjoy every minute of it and it helps me stay involved with my children at the same time. We are also a traditional school, and the classes for the older kids and those with higher belts are a bit too intense for the younger ones, but usually they flow pretty nicely making the change from one to another. If you don't want to, you can always follow up at home and adjust the instruction to include your tactics and point of vie. Good luck!

2. Arkie69 (1105) | 1 year ago | You used the term "Watered down". I personally do not believe we should "water" anything down. If the old ways worked then stick with them. If anything add things that will make them ever tougher. You can't water anything down without loosing something. These practices have greatly reduced the quality of our lives.

If on the other hand you feel you will cause more confusion than helpfullness just sit back and watch. Nothing wrong with a little constructive criticism every now and again also.

5. doubleloveyou (837) | 1 year ago | You know as well as I what you are to do. It is not your dojo. Therefore you will follow the lead of the Sensei not your way. If you agree to be under him, then you must fall under his authority, whether you agree with his tactics or not. Do not allow you friendship to trump the heirarchy of the class. The students will never learn to "be loyal to your school and to the art it teaches" if the instructors are not demonstrating that loyalty to their instructor.

7. tamarafireheart (12664) | 1 year ago | Hi Residual,
I think all sports seems to be watered down these day and children are not allowed to be competitive and sports are not important, it is very sad, but I think you may need to start someting up for those kids to get back into competing with each other.
