i have just been outside hanging out my washing and i noticed 2 of these butterflies on a towel, one flew off but the other stayed long enough for me to take a picture, it is beautiful, i had to stop my cat getting it though because he was chasing it around the garden, so does anyone know what type of butterfly it is please.....

The butterflies have come out very late this year, although I have still not seen as many as I usually do due to the rubbish weather this summer. From looking at the picture I would say your butterfly is a Red Admiral.

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4292)   ranked 2 out of 121 in wildlife  1 year ago

well i will be honest Gem, i have never seen one before, but it is beautiful...i got up close and snapped this little fella having a snooze on my towel...the other one flew off, Max tried to catch it but i am glad he didn't, they are so lovely aren't they, so it's a red admiral huh....hmmmmm first time i have ever seen one....

It's a Red Admiral. I have seen several recently too. These are migrant butterflies so it may just be passing by on its way south. Some of them do hibernate in England during the winter months. They are most often seen in England between May and October.

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4292)   ranked 2 out of 121 in wildlife  1 year ago

so they don't actually come from England? isn't it strange that these butterflies migrate, i always thought birds did that and not insects like butterflies...you learn something new every day huh....thankyou...

myLot reputation of 97/100. GardenGerty (20626)   ranked 5 out of 121 in wildlife  1 year ago

Like everyone else, I would tell you it is a Red Admiral, and they do migrate, but have not been studied much. The site I looked at says they like yards and marshlands. Your picture is beautiful, glad the cat did not get the butterflies.

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4292)   ranked 2 out of 121 in wildlife  1 year ago

morning Gerty, yes i am glad that Max didn't catch it, i would have been sad if he had have, i think they are gorgeous, i have never seen one before so it was a joy to capture it on camera, we do have marshland closeby, but it was lovely that it chose my washing to have a rst....LOL...thankyou....

It's a Red Admiral butterfly. Look at the following link to have a closer look at this type of butterfly http://www.butterfliesand... . By the way you have posted a nice interesting photo.

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4292)   ranked 2 out of 121 in wildlife  1 year ago

thankyou ron, isn't it wondeful looking at them amazing colours and patterns on their wings?, this is the first time i have ever seen one, especially in my garden, i have just looked at a better pic in the link tyou gave me, i am in awe, they are gorgeous, maybe they are feeding on the apples that have dropped in my garden, i did read that they eat bird droppings and fermented apples, so maybe they have found natures kitchen in my garden, happy they are wonderful creatures aren't they?

hi there!! How wonderful to have that land and wait for you!! Everyone has already told you what it is.. I will just add, it is also called a 'Vanessa atalanta' in case you want to look for more information. This must be a second generation if you have it fluttering about NOW in the fall. Wonder where it is migrating to soon..or do they stay there and hibernate where you are??
Thanks so for sharing this joy and a foto of it!

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4292)   ranked 2 out of 121 in wildlife  1 year ago

lol well at least i know what species it is now thanks to these people in here, i have no clue to where it will go next but i must say that it's a joy to see 2 of them fluttering around outside, they must be eating my fallen apples, and they are quite welcome to them also, i don't like the idea of them eating birdy poop though...LOL...it's quite a warm day today considering it's October, i am in awe with these little creatures, i am so glad that Max my cat didn't catch it because it would be sad to see it die in the "paws" of my moggie...LOL....

I see that you've already gotten your answer, several times!

These beauties probably wanted a bit to drink and your wet laundry was very handy! Isn't it nice when we can get that close to wildlife?

I had some kind of wren sitting on the top of our patio umbrella just this morning. I peeked out the window, which is only a few feet away from the umbrella and watched this bird sing it's little heart out! Not sure what kind of wren, exactly, although it looked like a sparrow but had a yellow breast. It's song was beautiful!

I wish I had been able to grab my camera before it flew away.

this is the finch

myLot reputation of 98/100. mentalward (4389)   ranked 7 out of 121 in wildlife  1 year ago

This picture of the finch definitely looks like the bird I'm talking about except that the yellow wasn't that bright. Maybe it was the same, only this picture is a male and the one I saw was a female... hmmm... now that I think of it, as far as canaries go, only the male sings. My bird was definitely singing!

Maybe yours is a picture of a British bird and mine was it's U.S. cousin. Who knows?

It could have been a young finch or the silly things got mixed up and mine was a cross-breed, if that's even possible in the bird kingdom.

Whatever it was, I certainly enjoyed hearing that bird sing so loud it sounded like it was right inside my kitchen! happy

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4292)   ranked 2 out of 121 in wildlife  1 year ago

oh wow, that must have been glorious hearing that hittle fella chirping away like that, we have song thrushes here and they sound like they are having a ball chunnering away all morning, they normally some out at dawn, their tunes is the same as the other thrushes, or maybe the same one comes every morning at the same time, it's lovely to listen to it, it sounds like a concerto if a few of them get together, but i just love their little songs, i love birds, we get a few in the garden which i don't recognise, robins are the most common here and all they do is make like a squeek noise but they are gorgeous to look at, i really think that you may have a finch, also they could be from the same genetics, but like you said, yours isn't as yellow, but nevertheless, your so lucky to hhave him/her singing to you i would have loved to have heard that......

Really nice shot of the butterfly! Nice of it to stay so
still for you to get a picture! It is really very beautiful!
I don't know anything about butterflies except that I just
love them and I collect butterfly things (not butterflys).
Glad the kittys didn't get it! They are out kinda late
as someone else said. I hardly see any here where I live
anymore and certainly not any that are so pretty and
colorful. I don't know what happened to all the pretty
butterflies that we used to see. We just don't seem to
have any here any more. I'm glad that you do and that you
are able to get the photos. At least I can still know that
they exist! Thanks tatty!

well my landlady is a buff at anything like wildlife and insects, she also said that they like to live off sap and apples that have fallen, the apples in my garden are fermenting at the moment, so they will be feasting on them right now, i was so glad that Max didn't get his claws into it, that would have been really sad, there were 2 of them but one flew off, maybe they were looking for a place to eat, i am glad that i caught them on my camera too because i love butterflies, we have had a few in the garden which i have not seen before, there was this gorgeous aqua coloured one fluttering by in the summer, never seen it before, but i couldn't catch it on the camera, also we have had the common yellows and a few white ones too, it may have something to do with the flowers that i have planted too, i have seen a few land on certain plants....thanks opal...

Thankyou Gerty, i think a few people have confirmed it's species, i have never seen a red admiral before and they have never come this way especially resting on my washing...LOL...it is gorgeous, i am so glad that i got a few pic of it before it flew away....also Max almost got it but i chased hi away so he couldn't kill it, it was a rare moment for me seeing that beautiful array of colour in it's wings...
