|  I don't know why, but I guess I just don't change my avatar much, so every time I go to do it, I can't remember how.. But that is okay, I added the picture here instead..And I wanted everyone to know that I won't be here tomorrow and if I am, it won't be until after sundown..

| |  I can't believe I found someone who is also Jewish like myself. As a Conservative Jew, I used to observe Yom Kippur by not going to work, traveling, not eating as repentence. But since I changed to Reform after I retired, I just don't write or do chores. And because of having to take medicines and having low blood sugar, I need to eat. I still go for services at the Jewish Community Center (instead of the synagogue which charges way too much). I made big dinners the first 2 nights (Rosh Hashanah), and tonight (Yom Kippur).
Anyway, I'm wishing you and anyone else who has the same religion a very happy, healthy, successful New Year. My husband is in Europe (since 10/2 until 10/11). He usually fasts, but I doubt he'll be able to do that with all the sightseeing that is scheduled (Globus & Starr Tours). I couldn't go due to being a caretaker for my 94 y.o. father; afraid of flying; get homesick after 5 days; not having enough money. I told him I'd light a Yahrzeit candle for all our dearly departed family.

| | I am sorry, Janet, I didn't mean to mislead you, I am not Jewish. Most of my friends know that I am a believer who embraces my spiritual, (and possibly physical) roots and that includes the Jewish holidays..
I am sure G♥d understands why you don't fast, for He does look upon our hearts.
I would like to go to a synagogue or a Jewish center, but there is nothing like that around here..In fact my neighbor who is a liberal Jew, when their kids were little, they would travel about 45-50 miles to go to Shabbat school and services...
Instead what I did was read the Torah readings for the week along with reading the book of Jonah and had some prayer time too..I also fasted, and though it was hard, I am sure it was worth it..

| |  Thank you, I don't celebrate it, but I accept all well wishes. Since you do celebrate it, Happy Yom Kippur to you, too. I don't know much about it except that the colleges in NY State gave us all the Jewish Holidays off. Which since High School gave us all the Christian ones off was a big change. The colleges also gave us Christmas and Easter, but no Good Friday or some of the others. Take care.

| | Thansk writer, that is awesome that NY State also gave you the Jewish holidays off..I remember when I was in High School and envious that this girl would get to stay home on Yom Kippur, then again this was a long time ago, I believe where I grew up, the population is more Jewish, so maybe they do get Yom Kippur off.. | | | |

| |  hope you are really having a blessed day and a very easy fast as well. As far as I know Yom Kippur means absolutely nothing to eat and to drink for 24 hours. Thats hard and I am not sure that I could really follow that.

| | Thanks book and yes, it is hard, but unlike other holidays which start in the morning, Jewish holidays start at sundown the night before...From doing a lot of juice and water fasts, the hardest part is sleeping on an empty stomach, with this one, as long as I eat somethign before sundown, then I am not sleeping on an empty stomach and I get to eat again the next day at sundown..But Janet said in the earlier reply, you shouldn't do a fast if you have health problems, this fast should only be done by healthy adults.. | | | |
