Carrying "Authority" to Extremes? |
| |
| Do you think this is carrying “I do it because I have the power to do it” a bit too far? A 12-year-old boy from Palmetto, Fla., was suspended from school for having a “Mohawk” haircut. The school principal felt that his ‘do would be too distracting to fellow students, so the youngster was placed alone in a classroom for the remainder of the school day, and he hasn’t returned to school since Monday. He was told that he’d have to shave off the remainder of his hair or remain on suspension until it grows back. At least in one Pinellas County school, administrators encouraged students to show their support for the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team by painting their hair blue and cutting it into a Mohawk. So what’s the big deal? Check the story here: http://www.heraldtribune.... I fully understand that if the ‘do were something that would distract his fellow students throughout the day or throughout the class it could be said that the ‘do is overly distracting. But the kid looks neat and clean, and the “Mohawk” doesn’t stand out like an erection. It’s not worth more than a glance and perhaps the comment “Kewl, dude!” Why is it that our educators take on the role of parent and savior of the world when there are FAR more important things, like teens giving birth in the restroom, then trying to flush the infant down the toilet? Like kids sneaking drugs or smoking crack? Like bullies beating other kids? Like TEACHING? What give this pompous, self-righteous, stodgy educator the right to deny the boy a bit of “team spirit”? Maybe HE is BALD? Maybe he’s not getting enough from his wife or girl friend? Maybe he’s just an OLD FART who wants to prove that he “can.” Do YOU find ANYTHING objectionable about the boy’s appearance? Good grief! I’ve seen Mohawks that look stand up like proud erections. This one is MILD by comparison. And we sit back and wonder why kids “go bad.” It’s stupidity like this that kids remember and after they’ve been shoveled just too much s*it, they begin to rebel. And truth be told, I wouldn’t blame this boy for rebelling. Memo to self: You may be getting old, RJ, and balding, but at least you can see the injustice in this action. Self-righteous and pompous you ain’t, nor are you stodgy. In this instance the score is principal 0, Mohawk kid 1. © 2008 RJScott | | Boy With Mohawk | | | | |

| | I think we should all pool our money and buy a case of toilet paper to send to this principal and tell him that if he was going to continue to act like an a$$hole, then he'd better have a lot of paper on hand! | | | |

| | My son also quit school after being told his shirt was inappropriate after he moved to NJ with me. The shirt said "Your Team Sucks". And it had a green monster on it. I had bought it for him as part of his school wardrobe. It didn't bother them when he went dressed to school like a gangster with a bandanna around his head and half over his eyes (partly because he was the new kid and he was trying to be intimidating instead of intimidated), but God forbid he insult sports in any way! They said 'sucks' was a swear word and not appropriate. To this day, I don't agree. They also refused to accept his promotion to 9th grade from the Utah school system saying they didn't think he had enough classroom time, so they stuck him back in 8th. He later ran off back to Utah to live with his dad and never went to school again. Do these people actually understand what effect they're having?? Do they care? | | | |

| | I see absolutely nothing wrong with the boy's mohawk. Some teachers like to exert their authority just because they can. It seems ridiculous to suspend the boy for a haircut. My sons' high school is very strict about uniform and, even if they have a stripe or a logo on their school trousers, after 10 warnings it is automatic suspension. One boy was barred from his year social because the school didn't think his attire was appropriate. Anything out of the norm is frowned upon. I can't wait to hear what they have to say about my 17 year old's eyebrow piercing when school goes back after the current holidays. I think some teachers have forgotten that they are there to teach, NOT to bully or stifle kids' self-expression. Kids should not be treated as sheep and expected to look identical. Those that stand out from the crowd, may be the free thinkers of this world who go on to do great things. | | | | | | |

| | Someone in higher authority needs to develop some balls to tell this principal he's out of line. As long as he gets away with this power trip, he will only get worse. | | | |

| | Where are the parents? Teachers? Friends and their parents? If this happened where I teach, the protests would be heard all over the country! I thought about this for a few minutes and realized that, of just under 200 kids in my classes, there are eleven boys with mohawks, and a lot of those are more flamboyant than this. Two years ago, a girl in my third period had a right pink mohawk. So what? | | | | | | |

| | There will always be problems with power. I suppose what people need to do is to exercise their own power. I certainly do not allow abuse of power to happen if I can help it. Cheers!! | | | | | | |

| | I think people like this just get off on the power they wield. Like you said, they do it because they can. They don't feel good until they can prove they're in charge - which only proves they're weak and emotionally impotent. There is not one thing wrong with this boy's haircut. My own son, when we all lived in Utah (the most conservative state in the US) had designs cut into the back of his hair in junior high. No one sent him home, no one thought he was a distraction. Their concern was his behavior. Not his hair. And, his hair didn't indicate any potentially bad associations because it wasn't gang related. One thing I learned once in a parenting program was that if it's not illegal, immoral or life threatening, it's NOT something to worry about. And, I haven't - that clicked with me like nothing else did. This boy's hair is NONE OF THE ABOVE!! | | | | | | |

| | That's ridiculous. There are far more distracting things going on in classrooms and on school grounds--spending time punishing something like this is a huge waste. What's the harm of a haircut? Maybe the guy always wanted a mohawk, but his parents would never let him, so now he's on a mission to destroy all mohawks. One of the teachers here has a mohawk that he dyes on a weekly basis. I suppose the university system is a little different. | | | | | | |

| | I don't see anything that distracting about it at all. It's quite short and not really how kids wore them when I was in school in the 80's. My best friend had one about 4 in high, even that was short. Anybody staring at it would get bored pretty quickly. Not like those spiked up jobs that you try to fathom what they put on it to keep it at that altitude for so long. | | | | | | |

| | I don't know what the big deal is on this one either. It would be one thing if he had a raised mowhawk. This one just lays there and I'm not sure if I can really consider it a mowhawk myself. I resembles one to me but I don't know what the deal is. Heck, when we were kids, boys had some pretty stupid haircuts. They used to shave their heads and leave nothing but thier front bangs! Nobody ever had a problem with it at our school. I don't like the haircut and hope my son doesn't want his hair cut like that but when your kid is old enough, what can you do? I don't think there should have been a problem with this kids hair. | | | | | | |
