When you go shopping, do you always put you child in a shopping cart? Has your |

| child ever fallen from it? I just saw a child fall off from a shopping cart because his mother was not keeping an eye on him but instead was busy chatting away with someone. The cart tipped over and the toddler fell smack on the ground. His mouth was bleeding and the poor thing was screaming in pain. It was terrible. | | shopping cart | | | | |

| | My oldest was happy and content in the seat. Then my middle one came along. She managed to unbuckle herself easily. I always had to keep an eye on it. So she started hiding that she was unbuckled (quite smart for almost two at the time). Then I checked for an item on the shelf and law and behold quick as a weasel the girl stood up, lost balance and fell out. Except for a little bruise, nothing, but she was shocked and cried. Not that it made an impression though. Now I checked that she was buckled each time I got something off the shelve. Yet at a register she tried to climb on the conveyor belt while I was trying to pay. The car pushed away while she was doing that and the cashier caught her in time. After that I let her walk. You would think it would be safer. No, now she wanted to climb in the cart and she is a good climber. I grabbed something from the shelf looked at the label and I hear crash. She had fallen and knocked the cart over. Giant bruise on her forehead but learned nothing. Two weeks later she tried to jump the cart while I was crabbing something. After that she finally learned her lesson. My third doesn't like to sit in it, but also is too impatient to unbuckle himself so he tries to wriggle out of it. Gives me some time to try and push him back into the seat. If I don't put him in the seat, he runs off and I have to chase him down. He has finally calmed down and stays near the cart. As a parent sometimes there is nothing you can do. Kids are fast. Things happen quickly. Of course in the situation you described it seems the mom didn't pay attention for a prolonged time. That's plenty of time for a child to do something he/she is not supposed to do. But hey, I used to doubt those women who said I looked away for just a second... now I know it's enough for harm to come to your child. | | | | | | |

| | I'm relieved that your daughter was not injured badly after experiencing what she did. My son didn't care too much to sit in the cart just like your son. So I gave up and carried him on my back using a baby carrier that is made to carry children on the back. I can't remember the name of it but it was made by Graco when I ues to go shopping. I agree, children are quick and so are babies who can move around. Both my children have fallen off the bed when they were babies. I had turned around and it semed it was only for a second and before I knew it they were on the floor. Luckily all they got were a bruise on their heads. | | | |

| | I wish I could have carried them in something like that but at that point they were simply to big for it, especially my son. He is two but the size of a four year old. People think we are lying when we say he is only two. Doesn't help that he learned how to talk fairly early and is very articulate by now. It was funny, when he was born the doctor was utterly surprised at how big he was. The poor guy thought I was simply overweight and didn't believe me when I said that this child is much heavier and bigger than the other two, lol. Anyhow, yes, things can happen quickly and I can only be thankful that kids are quite resilient. | | | |

| | My son was quite big too, but I don't think as big as your son. He is quite big compared to the majority of kids his age (10) here in my country. I always have to buy his clothes from the men's section. That's great your son started talking early. I'm small made and although my son weighed only 3.5 kilos when he was born, I really had a hard time delivering him although he was born just 3 hours after I got my pains. My doctor was surprised that he came out so soon. The same happened when I gave birth to my eldest (my daughter). | | | |

| | I always put my son in the cart when he was small enough to fit, he was ok with it unless he saw something he wanted. Whenever I would turn around or take my eyes off him, I always had a hand on him. I did see a dad with 2 kids standing in the back of a cart and I saw the little one reach (the dad was playing the crane game) and I tried to get there in time but couldn't and the child hit the concrete ground, I will never forget that sound. The dad picked him up and gave me a dirty look. I was shocked and just sickened. | | | | | | |

| | My gosh that's terrible. That father is a real stinker. Yesterday was the first time after many years I saw something like that happen to a child while shopping. Just like you, I will never forget the sound when the child hit the ground. I'll also never forgot the way that baby cried. It was horrible. That's great you hold onto your baby whenever you need to turn your eyes away from him. I think that's one great way of making sure a child does not tip over from the cart. | | | |

| | Oh and to think, due to the injuries these kids could have problems in the future. I always have a hand on because I've heard stories too of kids being picked up right out of carts when parents turn away. Too scary for me. | | | |
