This is pretty interesting. It seems that in response to years of study that Gay and Lesbian youth have a higher drop-out rate, officials in Chicago are set to open the first “Gay-Friendly High School.”

The school will not be exclusive to gay and lesbian youth, but will target students who feel they are the targets of bullying because of their sexual orientation.

Full story here: http://www.cnn.com/2008/U... say it is all about creating options for kids. An atmosphere of ridicule, bullying and the danger of physical assault is dangerous for any child. Studies have shown that more Gay and Lesbian youth feel unsafe on school property. The Pride school will be a place where they don’t have to subject themselves to bad circumstances.

Enrollment for the first year is projected to be 600 students.

So what do you think about this new concept?

I have a pretty relevant opinion. I am a gay man who went through my High School career openly gay… the first and only openly gay person in the history of my school. I was bullied, teased, and once hospitalized. So I do have some insight as to what these studies are saying.

But it’s my opinion that this “Pride School” is counterproductive. Gay and lesbian students shouldn’t be forced into their own segregated High School. In my opinion the schools across the nation need stricter policies to combat hatred and ignorance. Removing the students does not resolve the problem. People who have a negative opinion of gay people, in my experience, have very limited interaction with gay people. I have found that it’s important for gay and straight youth to interact and learn from each other. They need to learn that their differences are actually fewer than they think.

So I am of two minds. On one hand I see the value of protecting gay and lesbian youth at the same time offering them a quality education.

But on the other hand, I don’t think it solves the root problem, being intolerance. I think all schools need to become more aware of this issue plaguing gay and lesbian youth and try to incorporate more programs geared towards combating hatred and encouraging mutual respect and acceptance.

What are your thoughts?

im with you that its counterproductive. if its going to become a new trend to create schools geared towards those who are bullied to give them a safer learning environment.. they are going to be very very busy indeed. schools on down the line public and private are wrought with their cliques and wannabe tuff guys.. and anyone not within said clique.. is gonna catch hell from those who are. i was bullied.. they gonna create schools just for kids whos parents are farmers and poor? or just for fat kids? kids who wear glasses? short? tall? black? chinese? adopted? its illogical. i say create a school or two and put the parents who teach their kids to hate within the halls.. teach them to not be such bigoted idiots, thatd be more productive.

This is absolutely stupid that youth cannot go to school in peace, ANY youth at all..what is wrong with this culture here?

Hi Tee, This is a very interesting discussion, and all that you say here does make a lot of sense. After all not a long time ago, whites and blacks could not attend the same school, and that eventually had to end. Although as you say it will be a safer environment for Gay and Lesbian youth, it will not solve the problem of intolerance. I'm afraid that if this idea catches on, it will create even more narrow mindedness than exists today. The answer is to teach the young that there is nothing wrong with being gay and that would help erase hatred and encourage respect and acceptance. Of course I believe the problem in many cases starts in the home, and it will take at least a couple of generations to turn that around,as things stand now. If however the schools would start teaching what they know is the truth, it may not take as long to end this terrible ignorance. Blessings.

I think that it is good that there is at least an effort being made to keep these students safe, but no, it will not help to teach tolerance and eliminate the underlying problem.

Tolerance should be taught in all and any schools, starting with the elementary level and continuing on through to completion. It would be even better if tolerance were also taught at home, but unfortunately for now, that is not going to happen with all kids.

Further more, I think that there should be a law passed that makes it mandatory for anyone, child or adult, that is caught bullying, harming or otherwise harassing another person because of race, color, sexuality, religion or any other reason stemming from ignorance, to take a tolerance class. Kind of like people caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol have to take alcohol/drug classes for X amount of hours, well there should be a tolerance class for hate crime offenders.

I hope that someday, in the not to far future, that everyone will be able to live together, with all of their similarities and differences, in peace.
