My daughter has dyslexia and she finished college last year with 4 degrees in natural rescources. It took her 6 years to complete it but she did it. I have dyscalcula and dysgraphia. For those not familiar with these terms. Dyslexia is the inability to read properly most people see the words as upside down or backwards, Dyscalcula is the inability to do anything but the basic math and even that is a challenge. Dygraphia is the inability to write legibly. My dad had dysgraphia and some of my children do. Two of them have dyslexia, my daughter has it severly and she has two of her six children who have dyslexia and dysgraphia. It is hereditary. Some is also caused by illness or accidents or chemical inbalances in the body. I struggled to do math for years and learned I could do math pretty well until 3rd grade and I could read and play notes on the piano. Then I got scarlett fever and it caused damage to some of my brain cells. Doing math causes me to get blinding headaches since age 9 and I did not know why this was until tested and learned of the scar tissue damage to the brain cells due to a high fever in childhood. So party of these are hereditary and part are from illness or injury to the brain. Do any of you suffer from a specific learning disability?

I have scotopic sensitivity syndrome, which is often mistaken for dyslexia. I can process words correctly, unlike dyslexics. The problem is, I can't see them correctly. Words move on the page and the flickering of the page and the moving of the lines is very distracting. As a result, reading gives me bad headaches so I tend to do most of my reading on audio.

I didn't have a brain injury but sometimes this can be brought on by such an injury. If you want to know more about it, visit www.irlen.org (I think it's .org, maybe .com).
