Pavlov's Dog |
| |
| I am sure that many dog lovers and none dog lovers have heard of Pavlov and how he had done the experiment with bell ringing and dogs and how he got them to drool on command..(though why you want a dog to drool on command is anyones guess). If you haven't, here is some info on this guy and his experiment: http://nobelprize.org/edu... Now I don't want my dog to drool on command, but wondered if I could get her to come to me on demand. So, I started with a bell and rang it every time I fed her and I gave her treats for when I rang it between meals.. After just a couple of days, when Zoe was in the otehr room, I rang the bell and she came to me.. But to make sure that it will work when she is distracted is my goal..Because though she stays in our own yard, we have a neighbor dog that isn't very smart and will bark at us, and then of course Zoe chases her.. We also have another neighbors dog who comes over and visits us..One time this dog came over, I waited until both dogs were in the other room and I rang the bell and Zoe came to me again.. (she would never come to me if the other dog was in the kitchen) Now, in order to work this for outside, I have to get a dog whistle and train her with that.. So, my husband now calls Zoe, Pavlov's dog whenever she comes to me.. I am so excited because the last dog we had was deaf and she rarely got to run around because of it.. | | | | | |

| | I learned that in grade school, conditioned responses. Cool that you bring it up, I haven't really thought about it in years. | | | | | | |

| | Would you consider training your dog to come to you usinf this method? I would like to get my dog to, because though she isn't always allowed to run free, we do occasionally and only when my husband or I are supervising..This is because my 6 y/o and the dog both need this activity of running around together to relase their energy and have fun..But like I said, the one neighbors dog, because she doesn't like my dog will bark and to my dog, that is an invite to come over and chase her instead.. | | | |

| | In a way we already do. By training them with rewards, it's a conditioned response. | | | |

| | I am glad that working for you and your dog and I bet you can train your dog to do a few other things with the bell if you wanted too. I am like you and I don't want my dog to drool on command but I would like mine to maybe sit on command and maybe I will try this. | | | | | | |

| | That's a great story, carmelanirel. Most dogs are very intelligent and that is why they can be trained so easily. I don't think you will have any trouble getting Zoe to respond to the whistle. Good luck! | | | | | | |

| | I had called the tractor supply company store and they said they have dog whistles, so if not today, then sometime this week we will be picking one up.. | | | |

| | It's important to train a dog to come when you call. I personally like coming on command better. What if you don't have a bell handy or a whistle? Also there was some type of recall on the whistles that were being used and no one seems to know why (like did they not work? Or did they hurt the dog's ears?). We had a dog's fur catch on fire, he tried to run into our dry field and forest (we had a drought that year). It could have been horrible. But we yelled stop and lay down. He did. We rolled him and hit the fire out. Who knows where a bell or whistle would have been right then. Or clickers. Those are really popular, too. But I still prefer commands. Too many people forget the clicker in the stores. | | | | | | |

| | Luckily when he obeyed, there was a tarmack driveway still left, but he was going to go to the field. He could have died a horrible death. 9 1/2 acres of ours plus three other neighbors had fields and woods surrounding us. 40 acres in all could have gone up. | | | |

| | Oh wow, how scary for you..I could work on her stopping on command I guess, but I wanted to ues a whistle because once she gets into the neighbors yard, there is so much noise, I can't yell that far. The whistle would be worn around the neck of whoever is taking her out, which is why I wanted to use a whistle, because we can't wear a bell, like Bessy does... My daughters friend had mentioned about a whistle hurting a dogs ears, but it won't be like we are going to blow it full force in her face for a long period of time..Just a short blow when she is too far away for us to yell at her.. So if you have any ideas for me to train her to stop on command, I am willing to try..But I have to tell you, once she sees something she wants, it is like any training goes out the window, except I found using the bell, she responds to that.. | | | |

| | Yeah, I forget about noise, with the exception of when my neighbors use ATVs and snowmobiles, we have serious quiet here. I'd either search online or buy a book if I was training a dog. PetSmart has classes, but they aren't cheap. Take care | | | |
