My daughter's bedroom is a mess: what would you do? |
| |
| My daughter is 13 and she has never been really well organised. but it's getting worse. Yesterday I went into her bedroom and the show was awful. clothes everywhere on the floor, desk overloaded, garbage full, bed in a mess etc etc. I couldn't even walk there was so much junk on the floor. After getting very upset, I thought that she really needs help. I don't know how to help her. if I yell, she is going to clean it and then 2 days after, it will be the same. Should I threaten her? what would you do? do you have children who are disorganised like this? | | | | | |

| | my 15 year old's room is much the same as that and what we have done is buy her some organization stuff (boxes, shelves, magnetic bars) which have helped a lot but she still gets messy and then we just tell her if she doesnt clean her room up, she cannot go on the computer (or whatever.) | | | | | | |

| | Oh yeah! My sons bedroom is an awful mess. I use to get mad, threaten to take away things and privilages. Now I close the door and walk away. I have bigger issues to deal with lol. It's his room and his mess. I'm just glad I don't have to sleep in there lol. | | | | | | |

| | it's her room...she can do what she wants with it...i was not very messy yet i always had my mother come in my room and tidy after me even little things i left around...i never got to the point you talk about with your daughter...anyway it bugged me big time that my mother would put her nosei n my stuff...she was spying my things and making me lose things or throwing away papers i actually needed just cos she thought i didnt need them...i say just leave it up to her...tell her that she could at least try to keep things a bit more tidied up but there is not a lot you can realy do...when she grows up she will understand for herself that living in the jungle is not very convennient | | | | | | |

| | That is how my room was when I was growing up and I knew exactly where everything is. I don't make a big deal when my kids rooms get like that. They will clean them if I ask them to and I do ask them to if we are having company and I think that they may be upstairs for some reason. As long as they clean when I ask them to, it isn't a big deal to me. If I can't stand to look in there, I close the door. | | | | | | |

| | Are you ready to really commit to making her keep her room clean??? If you are I have the soultion! My parents did it to me and now 10 years later, my own house, family and more I STILL keep my room clean! My parents hated that I kept my room a mess my dad came up with this idea to do a room inspection. So on the day he did a "room inspection" he came in with a garbage bag. Any thing on the floor or bed or under the bed or on the dresser, chair, on the closet floor that didn't belong there went in the garbage bag. I mean EVERY THING. Garbage, one shoe, clothing, cups (empty) any thing and every thing. 5 HUGE garbage bags later my room was clean and the bags were in my parents room. So the deal was if they came to do a "room inspection" and my room was clean I got ONE garbage bag back. If my room was not clean then that stuff went in a bag too! I kept my room clean for a while then lost every thing again. That time I was only left with 2 pairs of pants. So I had to do laundry every other day so I had pants to wear. My mom seeing that I only had one pair of pants did an "inspection" just so she could give me a bag back. There were no rhyme or reason to the "inspections" some times my parents would give it a week other times it was every day for a week. Once it was about a month and I lost every thing! I still remember those horriable room inpections! My younger brother gets them now too! He hates them just as much as I did but he learned quicker then I did keeps every thing in a laundry basket (clothing in a laundry basket is acceptable) You HAVE TO KEEP UP WITH IT!! Consistancy is the KEY!!! | | | | | | |

| | horrible, you say.. yeah, I had the same experience, but not with my parents. My eldest brother is the one who was very strict with us. He's 10 years older than me, and I respect him to high heavens because of that. My sister, 2 years older than me, shared a room. We had a "clean day" like every Saturdays or Sundays since there are no classes. Our eldest brother checks up our room from time to time. But sometimes, when we needed more space, we goes into his room and do our stuff there. Being unorganized and lazy, I usually left my things in his room. So, when I remembered them and couldn't find my stuff, I know where to find them... in the trash can! lol ^^v those were the days | | | |

| | The bags...that's so funny! I tried that...but lost interest. Losing your stuff can get expensive. Nice story though, enjoyed reading. I wrote a song named " My Room's A Mess ". It's on youtube..see : iplaylive. I guess it has a flip side to inspections though. | | | |

| | Though I am an organized person, I remember my room was quite messy when I was in my teens. Well, I would get rid of the garbage frequently and make the bed too but I did have stuff all over the place and I would get mad if my mother tried to clean up the mess because I had some order in that disorder (if that makes sense). I knew what was where and when she cleaned it, I couldn't find anything. My son is starting to be that way and it's driving me nuts now....history repeating itself. But it's not as bad as mine was....it's just the bed not being made and the desk being overloaded. But he's just 8 now and I'm sure he'll get to where your daughter is pretty soon. And in both cases, it is quite surprising because my son and I are basically very organized people. Sometimes, people who are organized find it difficult to clean up when the junk gets too much to handle(I heard about that on an Oprah show). | | | | | | |

| | Mine was basically organized. Sometimes I would get piles of stuff but I could not stand it for long and would have to clean it up. I was never told to clean my room, I just like a basically tidy place. I am not overly crazy, either, and was not then. No OCD for me!! LOL | | | |

| | Welcome to the world of a teenager. My daughter is 13, too and her room is a permanent mess. I just make sure the door is kept shut so I don't have to look at it. | | | | | | |

| | Hi friends, You know, you are about the 10th person to tell me this. Just close the door. I really wouldn't have a problem with that, but..... If things are growing on plates or bugs are finding their way into the room, then I cannot just close the door. This is a part of my house. I keep the rest of the house as clean as I can. I cannot justify just closing off a room because the occupant of that room is toooo lazy to pick up their own mess!!!! HELP!!!!! Cheryl | | | |

| | My daughter is 8 and I am trying to get her to keep her room orderly. I have come up with a system. I have her clean up a portion of her room every day. she cleans under the bed one day, the next she cleans the top of her drawers, she will be cleaning her desk out and computer area on tomorrow. I have saved the floor for last that way anything on the top of the drawers wont fall onto it. We will buy her new accents for her room and bedding after she gets the place clean. She loves bratz, hannah montana, raven. I told her that we can find something from those catergories as her reward. After this is all done I will constantly reward her each month with a new peice of accents for her room to match as long as her room stays clean. I like to instill pride in her about how clean her room can be. I find myself yelling but it helps only for a day or so. I hope that this plan works. I hope that it can give you ideas as well. | | | | | | |

| | I think that's a good idea dividing a seemingly huge room into chunks. During that age, I was very tidy with my room especially if I have a new toy or a new decor. But when I went to highschool, priorities changed, cleaning my room is not one of them. Even if my room's messy, I know where to look for my stuff. So, when my mom goes cleaning it, I'll be like... MA!! You messed up my room again!! waaaaaaaaah!!! ^^v hehe! | | | |

| | I have one child who is a neat freak and the other could care less. Anything and everything winds up on his floor. He has shelves and things but it is still awful. I accidentally came across a site with step by step instructions on how to clean your room, bathroom, kitchen, etc.. in 15 minutes. I printed it out and taped it to his closet door. Since then he has done much better. I think sometimes their rooms get so cluttered that they feel overwhelmed and don't know where to start. If your interested in the website it is about.com. | | | |

| | That is an excellent idea!! I know that it can be quite overwhelming. The best thing is to have exact places for everything to go and not have too much stuff that they do not need. I find many kids have too much stuff in their rooms. A box for keepsakes, a bulletin board that must be purged with each season change (good stuff in the keepsake box, the rest in trash), really helps. | | | |
