I started a discussion yesterday with a few tips from the book I bought on Vinegar called"Kitchen Secrets of the Vinegar Ladies" I see there are a lot of people interested in this very cheap and versitile product so I thought I would start a discussion on some of the cooking tips... 1.tenderise meat by marinating it overnight in vinegar. 2.Add s spoonful of vinegar to cooking water to make cauliflower white and clean. 3.When boiling eggs, add some vinegar to the water to prevent white leaking out of small cracks. 4.Add s teaspoon of vinegar to water when poaching eggs to prevent separation. 5.Add a spoonful of vinegar when cooking fruit to improve flavour. 6.Add a teaspoon of vinegar to cooking water when cooking rice to make it fluffier. 7.Add vinegar to deep fryer to eliminate a greasy taste. 8.Beat 3 egg whites with a teaspoon of vinegar for fluffier meringue. 9.Adding a few drops of vinegar to water when peeling potatoes will prevent discoloration and will stay fresh in the fridge for days. 10. Make buttermilk by adding a tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of milk and let stand for 5 minutes to thicken. 11. scale fish more easily by rubbing fish with vinegar 5 minutes before scaling. 12. wipe jars of preserves and canned foods with a vinegar dampened cloth to prevent mold producing bacteria, 13.Avoid cabbage odor by adding a little vinegar to cooking water. 14. No more sticky pasta. Add a couple of drops of vinegar to your pasta as it boils and it will greatly reduce the starch. I hope that is of some use to the cooks in Mylot....

thanks for the info lilaclady!!that was really informative, ive experience that putting venigar on eggwhites on making meringue, cause it helps the eggwhite to becaome fluffy and full, but im more on using lemon juice to that because i use the meringue in my chiffon cake so the lemon juice became one of the flavors for the cake!!,happy lotting

There are an incredible amount of uses for vinegar and not just for cooking but also as a natural cleaner as well. I can remember my mother uses vinegar in so many things like cleaning the bathroom, adding it to water in the washing machine and running it through a cycle to get the residue out. I cannot ever remember her not having vinegar in the household through the years I was growing up. My partner and I have a small organic farm and so do not use any chemicals on the farm but we take that even further and try not to use anything other than natural products in our home. For that reason we have spent some years experimenting with different ways to do things and had a little bit of success. Yes, vinegar is one of the products that we always make sure we have, as it can be added to so many different things. Thanks for these tips and my partner is reading it over my shoulder and taking note of the ones that she didn't already know about.

Thank You for sharing!!! I always put vinegar in little dishes throughout the house when we paint. The vinegar sucks up the paint smell like you wouldn't believe. That also is a good tip for people like me with asthma.

When you add vinegar to water when boil eggs, it also makes them easier to peel. They look much better, especially if you are making deviled eggs.

Tanks for all these tips few are ones, I have never heard before especially wiping jar lids is great as I am in a place right now where everything develops fungi due to extreme moisture in the air. Till now I had used vinegar only in my chinese dishes and to make curd when no lemons was around. I am going to share this with all my neighbours here too.

Thanks for the information. We often like to use vinegar as an ingredient in our salad dressing we make at home. It works rather well for that purpose.

If you do'nt mind my friend' I'm gonna add more; add 1 1/2 tbsp. of vinegar per 1 cup of water and put it in a sprayer for cleaning your chopping boards. add 1 cup of vinegar to a liter of boiling water and dip all your utensils there, to keep those watermarks and germs out of it. Add a little amount of vinegar to a luke warm water when you're child has fever, and gently rub their body with towel, it lessen the temperature.

My my a weath of knowledge, and trust me it will go a long way. Thanks for more tips to use vinegar for. I don't know about others, but I appreciate them. Many of the things you have told us I was not aware of. I know using it will keep bugs from biting you, that includes ticks, fleas and other vicious varmits. A teaspoon of vinegar a day keeps them away.

Wow, vinegar has to be the most useful ingredient in the world! I have a book on 1001 of vinegar's best uses. It's not only wonderful inthe kitchen but for cleaning and hundreds of other things. It is truly a wonderful product. I use it to clean the bathroom sink and other surfaces, to freshen up the smells in the fridge and even in the washing machine. It is fairly cheap as well. I think we should all be using vinegar a lot more!
