As many experienced martial artists say, "it's better to start from scratch or zero than to unlearn something and learn something new". It's quite true. I've been doing Taekwondo for years and I started to learn Aikido. The transition wasn't really that difficult because Taekwondo and Aikido are disciplines of different nature. However, when I started to train in Muay Thai, I experienced some difficulty. Muay Thai's strikes, especially the kicks, are way different than Taekwondo, hence in order to adopt Muay Thai, I have to "unlearn" my Taekwondo and learn Muay Thai. It normally takes time to let the body get used to it. Aside from those, I have also tried doing Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Yaw Yan (Filipino Kickboxing). I never experienced much difficulty learning something of a different nature (from striking to grappling) but I had some hard time adjusting if it's of the same nature (striking to striking). Anyway, though it's a little bit hard at the start, it's still all worth it in the end. Learning different disciplines enables one to learn different techniques. In a few years of martial arts training, I realized that cross training to different styles is a lot better than sticking to one style. Martial arts is evolving and sometimes, new ones are better and more practical than old ones (though new ones are normally variations and adjustments of old ones). Just be sure to at least learn one art deeply and at least master some of it's techniques before starting to learn a new one. Being a master of one is still a lot better than being a jack of all trades.
