What do you think is the most polite and least offensive way of asking someone to extinguish a cigarette on your presence? (if it is inevitable...)

I am not sure how you can tell a person you just met not to smoke near you. If the person you don't know it is better that you walk away from him because who knows whatever you said to him would make him offended and he might do something to you which you might not like. But if the person is your family or relative, or a friend I suggest that you take a step at a time. I did this with my own husband, and now i have succeeded in persuading him not to smoke around me anymore.

The way is like this. At first I told him that smoking is bad for the lungs. It can cause cancer. But he didn't want to listen to me and said I am babbling and he doesn't like to hear about it anymore. I just be patient and let him be for a few days. Then I approached him in a different way. I told him if he smoke near a person who doesn't smoke, the effect of the smoke is doubled from the real smoker. If he loves me he won't smoke near me because it will the same as killing me.

After that he never smokes near me and when he forgets I always cough in front of me and made a gesture to show him that I really am annoyed by the smoke. He would understand and he would walk away.

Everyone knows they can't smoke in my home, as I have breathing problems so they just can't do it. When I am elsewhere and I'm with family and friends they still don't smaoke around me. If I were in a public place or someplace where they do smoke. I'd just remove myself from the area as it's me with the problem and I'm not going to inconvience anyone else. I'm just that way. If they ask why I'm not there or left, I'll let them know or someone will in my absense. Then if they want to respect the fact that smoking can not be done around me that is great.

I am not a smoker. I hate the smell, but I am sure that there are plenty of things that I do that other people hate. The one thing that would probably bother me is if my parents started smoking in the house again. They decided to stop doing that after we moved into this house, and I am glad. I was tired of going to school smelling like smoke all day long. People in middle school would walk by me and ask if I smoked.

If I am out in public, there are other places I could be rather than RIGHT THERE where someone is smoking. If I know that people are going to be smoking in a certain place, I avoid it. At concerts, for example, I don't go out on the smoking balcony. If I go somewhere where I know there will be smokers, then I just suck it up.

It is normally very difficult to ask people to stop smoking near you, but one thing I would is to look at them on the face, then smile, if they don't get that message I would look at them again and this time no smile. If nothing happened I would ask the person if she or smoke the other ciagratte which has got good smell and do not affect people near you, this time he should sense that am uncomfortable with the cigarate, or I will just tell him please excuse me, am having some lung and chest problem and that smoke is affecting me.

This is a good question, here most of the time you just have to point to the sign.
Most of our public areas are non-smoking now

Start coughing as though you can't hardly breath or as though you are almost choking and cover your mouth and nose with your handkerchief at the same time. The smoker will almost always put out his cigarette even witout your saying a word.

I politely tell the offender to please stop smoking. I'm allergic to the smoke. Even if they don't comply and I can't escape (let's say we sit in a moving car), I will get a coughing fit so violent... well, they'll get so concerned they stop, lol. No, I'm serious, I am allergic to the smoke and will not tolerate it around me lest they want to suffer the consequences (it ain't pretty).
