These days, we need all the encouragement we can get, I believe. How about this beautiful song by Don Williams?

Lord I Hope This Day is Good

Lord I hope this day is good,
I'm feeling empty and misunderstood,
I should be thankful, Lord, I know I should,
But Lord, I hope this day is good.

Lord, have you forgotten me?
I've been praying to you faithfully,
I'm not sayin' I'm a righteous man,
But, Lord, I hope you understand.

I don't want fortune, and I don't need fame,
Send down the thunder, Lord, send down the rain,
But when you're plannin' just how it would be,
Plan a good day for me.

Back to Chorus

Instrumental

And while we're at it:

I Believe in You
Don Williams

I don't believe in superstars, organic food, or foreign cars,
I don't believe the price of gold, the certainty of growin' old,
That right is right, and left is wrong,
That North and South can't get along,
That East is East and West is West,
That being first is always best.

But I believe in Love,
I believe in Mom and Dad,
It's true, I believe in you.

Well, I don't believe that heaven waits for only those who congregate
I like to think of God as Love,
He's down below - He's up above,
He's watchin' people everywhere,
He knows who does and doesn't care,
And I'm an ordinary man, sometimes I wonder who I am.

But I believe in Love,
I believe in music,
I believe in magic,
And I believe in you.

I know with all my certainty what's going on between you and me is a good thing,
It's true, I believe in you.

I don't believe virginity is as common as it used to be,
In workin' days and sleepin' nights,
That black is black and white is white,
That Superman and Robin Hood are still alive in Hollywood,
That gasoline's in short supply,
The risin' cost of gettin' by.

But, I believe in love,
I believe in old folks,
I believe in children,
And I believe in you.

I believe in love,
I believe in babies,
I believe in Mom and Dad,
And I believe in you.

Hope you enjoy these fine lyrics by an electrician from West Texas that didn't "make it" in the music business till he was in his forties. I saw him once in Branson, Missouri. A wonderful, laid back performer. I'm learning his music. I'm all over the place aren't I?

My website, by the way, is www.soundclick.com/danmatheny Check it out, if you've the time. Like Don Williams, I believe in love as the answer.

Thank-you for your response, though I think Don William's song is of a slightly different genre.

There is truly only one God, and He is Love.

Hi buddies,
Every one has a good song for them.
Lover,give thine all,all thou
hast and all thou art.
Give,give till thy hands and
heart are tree.
Dost thou fear?
Nay,perfect love knoweth not fear nor
aught but joy in giving.
When thou hast naught,
thou hast all.
Give thy life and give thy love:
Give all!give all!
When thy hands and heart are free
Thou shalt receive him who is all, yea, all in all.

Boy, does that speak to me! It entails all the virtues I hold most dear - give your all, know no fear, when thou hast naught, thou hast all. I would have capitalized "him", but no matter, you do well. Continue to put you poetry out there, and the gift will make room for itself.

Hey Dan, I visited your website. You sounded like a less grungy version of Neil Young backed up by Creedence Clearwater Revival (that was meant as a compliment by the way). Nice music you have there. Keep up the good work!

Thanks so much, Champ.

The songs were all produced by Jonathan David Brown. Johnny Decible. We made friends, via e-mail, many years ago. In 2000, we produced "The Last Mile", and that is not Creedence doing the back up, it is Johnny, Micheal Brinson, and my sister, Rachel Patterson. Johnny plays the drums, Micheal the lead guitar, and Rachel does the back-up singing. Rachel and I have sung since childhood, when we were part of an evangelistic family singing in churches throughout the South. Micheal is the music minister for a church in Oklahoma, Rachel is now way up in the Census Bureau, Johnny is now in Oklahoma City (we recorded it in Sparta, Missouri), and I'm down here in San Antonio. So many changes, but yet we are all still very much alive and well, thank the Lord!

Jonathan and I, strange thing, never met till we were both nearly 40. He's married to a lady that is the daughter of a man who helped start my Dad's church in Del Rio, Bill Britton. Turns out, she was the sister of the best friend of my wife at the time. The acoustic stuff from "Melancholy Ways", which he also produced, was all about the divorce from her and my recovery from mid-life crisis. Good news, I can and will live a more abundant life after that crisis that seems to affect men of my age. And I am. I found a new love, I found that I could actually make it in the big city after being a country boy all my life. I found that my knowledge of Spanish would help me to make it in a neighborhood wherein I was the only Anglo. And yes, as the song I wrote in Boise, "In a Day or So", it's true that we're both getting older. I mean you and me, my ex-wife and me, Johnny and me, my wife and me. We're all getting older, and like Don Williams wrote: "I don't believe in the certainty of growing old". You know what that means - that we may not have that opportunity. So, if I'm growing older, it is one more day to live, one more day to show my stuff, one more day to reach out and extend a loving hand to whoever I meet that day, or to my new family.

Bless you, and may you live long, and prosper,

Dan the Man

Thank-you so much for checking it out. There are songs from two different albums there: "Melancholy Ways", the acoustic stuff, and "The Last Mile", a fuller production done some 8 years ago. The producer was Jonathan David Brown, and if you never listen to any other music, hear his album, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God".

My upcoming CD will be with Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel, and we'll record it not too far from me in Austin. At least, I hope so. I've got to get a few tracks recorded on cassette and send it to Johnny. However, I've spoken with both Mike Brinson and Mike Schmidt, who I've played with before, about doing the guitar and bass work. I don't want fame and fortune, to be quite honest. The lives of those who've been made famous, or gotten rich off of music, hasn't exactly inspired me. Yes, there were those like Jerry Reed that were faithful to their wives, and kept up the "stage life" with a good balance of family life. But there were many who ended up so utterly depraved that they were no longer functional. And they found that the adoration of so many was just too much to handle - their egos swelled, and they became lovers of themselves instead of the music. Those are mistakes I want to avoid. And with God's help, I'll do it.

Thanks again, and I'll upload a later picture onto that site, and perhaps set up one of my own through Google or something.

Dan
