Who are you? |
|
Sometimes I wonder who we really are. I mean, we are born knowing absolutely nothing, and we learn to eat and drink and smell and feel. What determines our personalities? I know that we are largely made up of what our parents teach us and what we see. People get brainwashed, people get influenced. What are we, really? Can we be changed?

Sheepie (2561) | 1 year ago | I notice that once people form an opinion, like in politics or religion, it does not change when other people tell them to change it, but it will change if the person figures out they think they're wrong for themselves.

3. dragon54u (9761) | 1 year ago | I believe we are born with a certain temperament that can't be changed but can be enhanced through nurturing by our parents, friends, etc. Look at all the kids that are treated like crap yet grow up to be wonderful parents. Other kids get the same treatment and pass it on to their own kids. Some grow up in respectable hard working households yet turn into criminals and others are raised in squalor and crime and become upstanding citizens. That's temperament.
Personality is what we develop as our social defense/offense, what people get to know as they associate with us. Personalities can change, of course, depending on what a person experiences.

8. ShellyB (3008) | 1 year ago | Who am I? ME, and yes, we are influenced by where we were born and where we were raised and other people along the way, in the end we take what we like and discard what we don't. We can change, it is a matter of wanting to change.

9. mojcica (838) | 1 year ago | We are what we are tought as children. BUT when growing up we see the world with our own two eyes, using our own brain and therefor should be able to see the world our way. Unfortunally not many people do that and live their lifes as they were tought.
one example: I have a cousin who is a medical doctor, she is over 40y old now. When she was growing up her parents didnt have enough time for her so she always resented that. I understand that she missed them or whatever, but she is a grown up now and educated too so one would assume she would use her own head to change this and try to make things work with her parents, afterall thats what they are, but no she is still acting just like she did when she was growing up. Meaning she acts at this age exactly as she was tought before. Even though she could change this.
So just like she many people always stay the same and either dont want to change or dont know how to change or just dot see the wider picture. And those people will never know who they are as they will always live in a cage that was made for them while growing up.

10. makingpots (6663) | 1 year ago | What an excellent discussion, Sheepie. I do not believe that I am going to do it any justice with my answer. But the topic interests me quite a lot.
I disagree that we are born knowing absolutely nothing (although I know the point you are making - we are a clean slate, a tabula rosa). I believe that our personalities begin to form even in utero and that the preg. mother's health and surroundings affect personality greatly. It seems apparent to me that a mother's choices can have lasting effects on a childs temperments.
What are we, really? Can we be changed? While I believe there is a core personality or temperment that will always prevail in each of us, I tend to believe that we can change the forces of brainwashing or other influences. The mind, body, spirit is a powerful thing and when used together can do and achieve amazing things.

Sheepie (2561) | 1 year ago | Well, it is true that babies, while newborn, seem to have personalities, but I'm not so sure. Some are just more active than others, and I guess that could really effect who they are in the long run.
