MP3's and 6 y/o's |
|
My daughter and I both had gotten a free MP3 player back in the Spring, but it was free because it only holds so much music..Like on mine, I uploaded my CD and could get all but one song on it.. Well, my daughter ended up buying a better one for herself and she put on music that my 6 y/o likes on her old one..And she gave it to him with 2 rules that if he broke them, she would take it back. Rule number 1, don't take it to school and Rule number 2, don't throw it in your toy box, he is to give it to her or me when he is done with it..
So, considering this player probably is not even worth 5.00 and it has limited music, I had no problem other than he doesn't use it while I am talking to him, he doesn't have it while we are eating together and it is to never be up loud, that if he can't hear what I am saying in a normal voice while listening to music, then it is too loud..
So, those are my rules..Do you think that since these rules are in place, that it was a bad idea to give him one at this age? At what age is the right age for a MP3, whether an expensive one or not? And would you have strict rules like we have?

1. ebsharer (2474) | 1 year ago | For Christmas last year we bought both our kids a MP3 player. They were about 25 bucks each. They hold a lot of music! I'd say we got about 80 songs on my sons and over a hundred on my daughters (shorter songs).
Our rule is if you lose it you don't get another one.
Other then that we let them go. We know what songs are on it so thats fine with us. We let them take it to school because they have a long bus ride. Also my son likes to listen to his during recess.
They know when they aren't allowed to listen to it which is dinner time. They would never even bring it to the dinner table because thats talk time and they look forward to it as much as we do.

carmelanirel (6339) | 1 year ago | wow, that's good..My daughter got one for 40.00 that holds like 500 songs, she loves it..But like I said, the one my son has only holds very few songs, but she didn't want him to take it to school, she is afraid someone will steal it which is too bad, because my son also is on the bus for a long time, about an hour, and that is the worse part of his day, the bus ride..

carmelanirel (6339) | 1 year ago | At 6 y/o? My older kids didn't have something like that until they were at least 10 or 11, but with my 6 y/o having a 19 y/o sister, he is more mature, but she is still insisting he don't take it out, he may lose it or it might get stolen...So for now, he has one, but only for at home or in the car..

sedel1027 (12411) | 1 year ago | When I was 6 I had an AM/FM radio. We are a technology forward house, my son was one of the main PC users in the house when he was 6. He will be 10 in January and has had his own PC and very basic digital camera for about 2 years now. He had an AM/FM radio when he was much younger.

3. book1962 (14761) | 1 year ago | its a great idea to give him the MP3, as it was free and when it doesnt function any more or is broken its no big loss (like starting with inexpensive gadgets like this for kids anyways. The rule of not taking it to school where it can be stolen or thrown on the floor and not throwing it into the toy box is good and also the rule of not having it louder than your speaking.

4. CarlKnittel (362) | 1 year ago | I got my first new radio when I was about 10 but I had tape recorders and such way before that. When dad upgraded to better equipment us kids often got the older stuff. That tape recorder lasted until I was in my teens and would have been around longer if I hadn't gotten a newer one with stereo speakers and the like. I don't own an mp3 player myself yet so I can't say much for that but, I wouldn't recommend in the ear type headphones at that age. In fact I don't think I had anything but an ear bud before I was a teen and I didn't get that until I was 10. Even then it was large and had a wide base that kept me from pushing it into my ear very far. This solved the problem of not hearing parents and was probably good for my hearing. They do make speakers that plug in like head phones. I have a pair attached to my old Walkman cassette player. Not olny does it solve the earbud problem but you might like them for listening to your own music or turning your portable radio into a mini boom box.

carmelanirel (6339) | 1 year ago | That is what we did, we gave him the style of ear phones that don't go into the ear, I didn't want that..And my daughter does have this back pack type bad where you plug in the MP3 player to hear it without earphones, but then he couldn't listen to music without disturbing his Dad..(Dad is not into music at all)
