COSTCO Vs. SAMS |
|
Hey, can anyone give me info on these 2 wholesale clubs. We had Sams, a few years back. I've heard that Costco has more organics than Sams, any info on that?
Also, can you get a guest card to try the place out before joining?
I appreciate any helpful info on these clubs. Trying to decide if joining would be worth my while. The nearest locations are about 1 hour away from me.

1. kerriannc (3233) | 1 year ago | Hello Irish, miss your face during the week. The little I know about Costco is that they are one that stands out for quality. There were a company here in Jamaica that was using that need and they told them to change it because what this company was selling is inferior. So hence the name change to the one here in my country. I would encourage you to give it a try.

2. rjscott (3074) | 1 year ago | I don't know a thing about Costco, but I have a membership at Sam's that runs $40 a year. Sam's allows members to bring guests, but I think that you could get a guest "free run" for a one-time use. Call them or visit their Web site for the store in your area more info.
I can't say that Sam's has any better a selection of organics than any of the other stores locally.
And, to be perfectly honest, for the items that I get there the prices aren't all that wonderful. I go there mainly for Fruit 20 and double boxes of Cheerios, which I cannot get elsewhere.
Memo to self: You pay for the membership but unless you shop there all the time, that membership fee could fill your gas tank. Oh! Locally today, the lowest price on gas is $2.19, LOWER than Sam's. (C) 2008 RJScott

Irishfrndly65 (7387) | 1 year ago | Yip we can get the 10% ethanol blend, you know...the stuff that runs out of your car 3 times as fast....at $1.95! I chose less ethanol for $2.06. LOL!
| |
|
|
thebohemianheart (2704) | 1 year ago | yeah, I know it's cleaner, or supposedly it is. But, when you think about it, it is more expensive in the long run. AND, with all the devices on vehicles these days, I am not so sure that the whole thing is not a bunch of whoopla. If the government would let the companies drill here, we wouldn't be in so much trouble. And, I am going to shut up now, cuz I really have no idea what I am talking about.

kerriannc (3233) | 1 year ago | Bio and Irish, we have started to used ethanol here in Jamaica. It is 90% 87 gasoline and 10% ethanol. Persons who has been on the trial team says that it is good and much cleaner. Maybe you can just give it a try for about a month and see how it works. You know it is like changing your baby feeding and it doesn't seems as if it is beneficial but little by little you see the baby growing and becoming more healthier.

Irishfrndly65 (7387) | 1 year ago | My Jeep is a 2001 and it burns this fuel mix at 3 TIMES the speed that it burns regular or low ethanol. I would love to try it if they would also lower the price to one third of the cost of regular mix. Us po folk can't carry all this anymore. If they want us to "go green" they need to come up with cost effective ways for us to afford it. At this time I drive VERY little. I have cut my driving to 4-6 trips PER MONTH! My man has to go in daily, to his work. We have older vehicles that are completely paid for. We can NOT afford a newer vehicle that, supposedly, uses this new mix more efficiently. We have no car payment and make it pay check by pay check so one of their new vehicles is simply NOT an option for this one income family.
Talk is no longer cheap, for the hard working folk their TALK is getting pretty expensive. I know people that were paying $600 a month for JUST gas, before the priced dropped back down. There's no way we could have done that. By me not driving we kept our bill below $300 per month and that near did us in.
Yip, they can keep talking, but they have to make it affordable for the "little peoples". I will continue to scrimp and save and do the best for my family until they can make it where we can afford to buy it. They need to either make it more efficient for older vehicles or come up with another option...or HEY they could buy us all new cars, I'd go for that.
As a family that has vowed to become debt free and not live off of other's assitance, I will continue to make the best decision for MY family. Sorry that's the way it is, I won't do into debt for the benefit of someone else and leave my son a legacy of debt and unpaid bills, because of some gasoline.;)

kerriannc (3233) | 1 year ago | Well Irish, I don't understand how Ethanol is more expensive than the other Gas Brands because here it is cheaper. I know that USA buy Ethanol from us but at least it should be cheaper because they also manufacture it there in the US. They use the Corn while we used the Sugar Cane. It would certainly be unwise encouraging people to be more environmental aware and then the same thing that you are encouraging is out of the citizens reach. Maybe the environmental watchdog need to take a look at the prices. As I say it is a mixture and so it should be cheaper. Maybe the Gas Station has increased the prices as we all know they are businessmen and maybe the profits are not great so they are still pushing the other brands.
Yes, Irish things are really hard worldwide, here were I am working I am going home with $2800 for the week because I received $2000 on monday when Norris was ill. So I have to carry him to the doctor. This lady who I am working with has $12,000 for me and she pays me the way she can. It is hard all over but we have to just have Faith and hope that this will change for the better.
Maybe for the cars, you can investigate and see if the pumps can be change so that you can buy the cheaper gas. Hopefully the Officials will see that Ethanol prices are too high and bring it down.
Just take it one day at a time. Changes will be coming soon Hopefully.

Irishfrndly65 (7387) | 1 year ago | Here the ethanol mix is either the same price or just a few cents cheaper. For the way burns out of my car, that don't cut it. I'm not griping, mind you. I think our family is much better off than many BECAUSE of how we choose to be debt free. I don't know how those who spend willy-nilly are making it at all.
If you are coming home with $2800 in one week, I'm moving near you. My man don't bring that home all month and he has a really good job with really good benefits. Granted they pay our insurance and he has retirement, etc that comes out of that. But man you could live high on the hog here bouts with that kind of money! So you can see why I am pinching my pennies and balking at paying higher prices for gas that burns 3 times as fast. LOL!
| |
|
|
|
Irishfrndly65 (7387) | 1 year ago | Ok, well I was going to move next door to you! LOL! I love living in the country but sometimes the gas expense is really something. America is so spread out, especially Texas. I keep saying that they need to bring the railroads back to life for people to use for commuting. The closest metroplex is over 1 hr away and those are the only places that have public transit. US needs more public transit with these gas prices, if you ask me.

3. empracht (39) | 1 year ago | From what I know about the two companies, I'd choose Costco over Sam's any day. Sam's is owned by Wal-mart, whom I've been against for years due to slave labor practices, poor treatment to employees, and the destructive effects they have upon small towns and small businesses.
Costco, on the other hand, works with the community and buys many locally owned and produced products. The employees get paid well and get good benefits. I don't know if you can get a guest pass or not. It would not surprise me if you could. But if you are trying to pick which one to join, go with Costco.
As far as it being worth your while to join, Costco is great for bulk purchases. If you're a parent, for example, who purchases diapers, I've heard that alone makes the membership worth it.

4. leenie50 (1814) | 1 year ago | Hi Irish, Well, if I had to choose, I'd choose Costco. Here in Orlando, we have 3 big box stores as they call them. I'll rate them in order. 1. Costco- I think Costco has the largest selections, especially at Christmas. When I lived in California, I too had to drive an hour to Costco. 2. BJ'S- It comes the closest to Cotsco, but in my experience, Costco seems to be bigger and offer more. I do think that BJ'S has a larger wine selection. 3.-Sam's to me offers the least in all areas. But to be fair, I didn't use Sam's as much when I was a member. But like I said, in my experience I think Costco is still tops. I know BJ'S offers a free 2 month membership, but I don't know about the other two. I would either call or google each store for any promotions. Good luck sweetie. leenie

5. marianstallings (115) | 1 year ago | I don't know about the organics but I do know that Costco is a lot more appealing than Sam's and the Customer Service Reps are very friendly. On one particular day, I was shopping late and the store was closing. Usually an announcement goes over the speaker to inform you that the store is closing, but not at Costco. As soon as it is 10 minutes to closing you start noticing employees honing in on you. These guys come from nowhere with headsets and walkie talkies. When they approach you they have this big smile on their face and they ask if they can help you finish shopping. So, of course I always go towards the end of the day now. I tell them what I need and they go get it and bring it to me until I'm done with my shopping list. I love having my own personal shopper! They will also box your food for you, something Sam's won't even think about doing. You're stuck packing your stuff as you load it into your car or trying to box everything in the food court before you go outside if the weather is bad.

6. janeives43 (980) | 1 year ago | Hi Irish..I used to belong to Costco, and I didn't find it as economical as going to Walmart. Maybe it's because it's just the two of us at home, now, but I could always get most of what I needed cheaper, elsewhere. I don't know anything about the organics there or at Sams.
If you have a BJ's Wholesale Warehouse anywhere nearby, I would recommend that one. Good prices and a wide choice of items. I've been a member there for a couple of years, and even with a small family, I find my membership pays for itself. I learned about BJ's with a free guest card, so if you find one, check that out.

webeishere (12394) | 1 year ago | The membership cost is worth it at any store along these lines I feel. We are also members at Restaraunt Depot. Thats a store here in Minnesota that sells mostly restaraunt things. Food of course but other things needed in a kitchen as well like knifes, pots, pans, etc etc. All at a reduced cost too. A bulk store for foods and cheap prices on great quality itmes not food related as well. May get some gifts for friends and family there this year also. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

8. whittby (2039) | 1 year ago | I belonged to Sam's Club a few years back. We didn't have a Costco in the town we lived in. The prices were somewhat cheaper, but I found that when we went there, we ended up buying all kinds of stuff we may not have purchased elsewhere. So the savings was eliminated by our other spending. Just our personal experience - obviously we are spur of the moment, impulse shoppers. Going to Sam's was being like in a candy store - so much good stuff to buy.
We have a Costo about 15 minutes away here and I may consider giving it a try. I'd like to start stocking up on basics. It woudl eliminate all the little trips to the store.

9. webeishere (12394) | 1 year ago | y wife and I have a membership at Sam's. No idea what iot costs as it is through her restaraunt where she works. We did have one for Costco but did not like it as they were costlier than Sams back then we felt. Now we live within a mile of Sama and it is very nice and helpful. As far as organic goes I have no idea really as I seldom buy that stuff. You can go to customer service and request a one day pass at both usually I hear. They also offewr days for free memberships a few times during the year. One should be soon for the holidays I think also. Sorry I could not be of much help really. As far as if it would be worth joining, that depends on how much you'd buy/use from there. Being we are so close we shop Sams every weekend alomost. We give our daughter and son some of the items we buy as well to help them save money as well. Great if you shop with someone else in the neighborhood to split costs and foods as wewll. A great way to go as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~
