Please make sure you buy from a brand that uses "fully hydrogenated vegetable oil" and NOT "partially hydrogenated vegetable oil" (which means trans fat) in the ingredient list.

Yes peanut by itself is healthy if we just eat the peanuts as they are. However when made into peanut butter we've to consider a few factors. We have to check whether on the ingredient list there is "partially hydrogenated vegetable oil", where the vegetable oil can be cottonseed oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil and of course not forget peanut oil from the peanuts themselves. The vegetable oils are monosaturated or polysaturated fats which sounds healthy, but when they are partially hydrogenated, they are turned into trans fat which has been confirmed by research that it is unhealthy and increases risks for cardiovascular disease and cancer. However there're brands which uses "fully hydrogenated vegetable oil" which is trans-fat free since all the double bonds are taken up by hydrogen. So butter being a fully hydrogenated fat is in fact healthier than peanut butter made with partially hydrogenated oil. Next is of course the sugar content of peanut butter, which comes second in quantity after "roasted peanuts". Therefore unknowingly we may have ate lots of unhealthy fats and sugar.
