Sour Sponges to Stuck on Food  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 89/100. janeives43 (979) 4 years ago

A few more scribbles from my rolodex that I have found helpful, thru the years...

Sour Sponge: Soak the sponge in lemon juice and rinse it out. This will remove the odor for good but keep in mind that it is important to either dispose of, bleach, or run your sponge through your dishwasher regularly to keep bacteria from growing.

Stains in Plastic Storage Containers: Use a baking soda paste (baking soda and water) and rub into the stain. You can then rinse with vinegar (optional) and wash normally. Another method is to place container outside on a nice sunny day and the sun actually bleaches the stain out. To avoid stains in the first place, spray container with cooking spray before putting things in it that stain i.e. spaghetti sauce.

Stickers, Decals, and Glue: To remove them from furniture, glass, plastic, etc. saturate with vegetable oil and rub off.

Stuck-On Food in Pots, Pans, and Crockpots: Fill the pan with water and place a fabric softener sheet in the water. Allow the pan to soak overnight. The food will wipe right out!

These little jottings may not be news to you old hands, but it's useful information for someone who has never had to take care of their own place before. I hope you enjoy!

I run my sponges thru the washing machine weekly, and I haven't had a problem with sourness. If you try this, it's important NOT to throw them in the dryer, as they're apt to melt.

Whoops..that's a really good point! Most of today's sponges aren't real sponge. I guess I'm lucky I haven't had an accident yet. Thanks Deb!

As usual you are a gem with knowledge. Any idea how baby hair form forehead and body be removed easily. she is 3 months old.

At 3 months of age, the baby's hair in those areas might fall off on it's own. I wouldn't want to suggest anything because she is so young. If it bothers you, why not ask her pediatrician?

Hi Janey,

How do you file these little goodies in your rolo? Are these tips filed individually? I'm just curious. When I put together my Janey's Tips Book they will be full pages that I have copied of your posts. I'll have to tab it somehow. Got any ideas?
Spraying your plastic before filling is a super idea. I do run my sponge and other dish cleaners through the dish washer. That's another great quick cleaning idea. I have this dish cleaner that looks like the bar-b-Q mops that I use for cleaning glasses etc. Instead of open ended like the ones for Bar-B-Q, it loops at the end of each cotton string. So it is perfect for glasses etc. One problem, I can't remember where I bought it. I am desparate to find another one. It had to be Target or Linen-n-Things or someplace like that. When I have the opportunity, I will look till I find it. Once again, thank you.

Hi leenie..I try to alphabetize, but over the years, things have gotten out of control. If you notice the hints in this discussion, they are all alphabetized with a key word..sponge, whatever.

Your dish cleaner sounds like a dream come true. Isn't it a fact..we find something that works well and have such a hard time replacing it when it's used up? Take care..Jane

You're welcome, Debbie. I answered your question in another discussion today. I wish I could have found a better answer, but maybe what I sent will help. Jane

Debbie..I thought I had a tip from way back, and I found it! Rub regular toothpaste, not the gel, into the stain with a soft cloth, let it set a little, then clean off with warm water. Hope that one helps.
