Open office, closed office or cubicle - which you prefer and where you work? |
| |
| I know there is no perfect solution for a work environment, some things work better for some people, some work better for others. So I started this discussion to learn about people's preferences and experiences. I personally work in a company that uses a mix between open plan office and cubicle layout. We have wall sections around 3 feet high inside every four-desk cluster and no walls anywhere else. I like the layout since people are generally quiet here and having cross-cluster conversations is very easy when needed. I don't think a real cubicle or an office would work half as good. Of course, if we had more people in a room (currently around 20) then things would be different :) What's your preference - do you like a completely open plan office, do you like having walls and a door or do you prefer the solution in between these two? In what setting do you work now, whether and why you like it? | | | | | |

| | I believe it should depend on the type of work you are doing. I was a Payroll administrator, I was given an office with a lock, since I was handling confidential information. Then for whatever reasons, I was removed from the office and given a cubicle in the midst of the office. Therefore, my phone conversations among employees was no longer confidential because everyone could hear what I was saying, and the paper work was no longer under lock and key. It doesn't matter to me what I have, but I think the work you do should determine it. My fax machine was open to the masses for anyone to see if I was not at my desk. | | | | | | |

| | Hi there matipp! I work in a school and the place we consider our office is the faculty room. All the teachers stay in one office. Only our heads have their own tables even if they are with us in that office. There are 4 long tables that we share with our co-teachers. Our dean is in a separate office in the same area. The set-up is good enough but it can get better. I would rather have my own working table... | | | | | | |

| | My desk is in an open area as is my bosses. We are both on the first of two floors. I am in the area when you walk in the door and he is in the office next to mine. He has doors but never uses them his office is always open. The other two people have offices upstairs. I wouldn't want there offices because they don't see any one during the day innless they come down stairs. I like my open office it gives me a chance to talk to any one that comes in. I need to be the "center" because of my job. I deal with customers, and field workers all day. I have to be right in the mix. We only have 4 people in the office including myself and 8 people in the field. | | | | | | |

| | My office is tiny room where we have 5 counselors and then our boss sits in the back office....Its in a tiny space we have door to get in and out and cubicles..We each have our own lil cubicle. I kind of prefer my own office tho so I have my space and not everyone can hear ur conversation if ur wit a patient or on the phone. Thats what I hate the most. Its easy 2 hear what ppl our saying and they are nosy! But dont get me wrong I like my job and all but they could reorganize our space and make it bigger or something....Its ok for now tho I guess. | | | | | | |

| | I have worked in almost all types of work space. I have tried a cubicle, open space, long table, call center type. The best office space I love most is the one I am working on now....my room. That's right. I'm working homebase so my computer is in the room and I love working in this space because nobody bothers me and I can wear anything I want and start working in the time that I want to. In other words, I have freedom. | | | | | | |

| | As for me I really don't want working inside a cubicle. Although it would be helpful in making me more focused in my work I think it makes me feel that I'm separated and alone from other people. Also working in a cubicle limits so much the space needed sometimes for me to stretch my legs after long hours of sitting. | | | | | | |

| | it depends on who yo are at the office. If yo ar a boss and want to keep an eye on your subordinates, yo want your subordinates to be in an open office with see through cubicles, while you yourself want an office which has its privacy. if yo are a subordinate, yo woudl love to have a private cubicle where your boss anc't see you. | | | | | | |

| | When the weather is good, I usually open the door. But when the weather is bad, I usually closed the door. I am afraid of cold weather. Good weather to open the door for good ventilation is good for our health. | | | | | | |
