Nobody believes a liar...even when he is telling the truth! |
|
That is the last line in the Aesop story, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and it holds an important lesson that people would do well to heed. Here's the story:
http://www.storyarts.org/library/aesops/stories/boy.html
The Boy Who Cried Wolf
There once was a shepherd boy who was bored as he sat on the hillside watching the village sheep. To amuse himself he took a great breath and sang out, "Wolf! Wolf! The Wolf is chasing the sheep!"
The villagers came running up the hill to help the boy drive the wolf away. But when they arrived at the top of the hill, they found no wolf. The boy laughed at the sight of their angry faces.
"Don't cry 'wolf', shepherd boy," said the villagers, "when there's no wolf!" They went grumbling back down the hill.
Later, the boy sang out again, "Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!" To his naughty delight, he watched the villagers run up the hill to help him drive the wolf away.
When the villagers saw no wolf they sternly said, "Save your frightened song for when there is really something wrong! Don't cry 'wolf' when there is NO wolf!"
But the boy just grinned and watched them go grumbling down the hill once more.
Later, he saw a REAL wolf prowling about his flock. Alarmed, he leaped to his feet and sang out as loudly as he could, "Wolf! Wolf!"
But the villagers thought he was trying to fool them again, and so they didn't come.
At sunset, everyone wondered why the shepherd boy hadn't returned to the village with their sheep. They went up the hill to find the boy. They found him weeping.
"There really was a wolf here! The flock has scattered! I cried out, "Wolf!" Why didn't you come?"
An old man tried to comfort the boy as they walked back to the village.
"We'll help you look for the lost sheep in the morning," he said, putting his arm around the youth, "Nobody believes a liar...even when he is telling the truth!"
There is an ugly new trend at mylot and in the outside world where just like thew boy in this story, people are making false cries, but they are crying racism where none exists instead of "wolf" but it is really no different. The more people make false accusations towards innocent people, the more good people will begin to turn away form hearing it, and when REAL racism shows up in all it's horrible ugliness, the cries will go unnoticed becasue people have stopped paying attention, like in the fable, "Nobody believes a liar...even when he is telling the truth!"
I am not the only person to notice this phenomenon, here are some interesting links for anyone who cares to read and learn:
http://media.www.collegian.com/media/storage/paper864/news/1998/04/16/UndefinedSection/When-Racism.Cries.Wolf-1692658.shtml
http://leopardatthesummit.blogspot.com/2008/10/false-racism.html
"Cries of racism where it doesn't exist only makes those that care, turn the other cheek when it really happens. They will be tired of wasting their time and energy because they listened to the false accusations. Good, caring people will become like the town that got tired of listening to the boy that cried wolf."
http://proteinwisdom.com/?p=13447
Do you support those who make repeated false accusations, or do you think eventually they will find their cries falling on deaf ears because people tire of investigating alarms raised when there is no true cause for alarm and that the people making these fake claims will one day find that when they have a claim which is actually of merit, people have stopped paying attention to them.

MSV1313 (2243) | 1 year ago | There will come a point when there are so many fake accusations of racism thrown about that when a REAL and nasty incident of racism occurs, people may not take notice since they have tired of hearing the false ones for so long.

3. sndcain36 (2667) | 1 year ago | Excellent links MSV! The race baiters try to silence any criticism of Obama because the idea that Obama will be a failure as president is too horrifying to be borne; Obama MUST succeed because the alternative is unthinkable. So they call his detractors racist and hope that is enough to fool everyone.
These people don't want equality for Obama, they want affirmative action; they want special treatment for Obama; they want him to be exempt from the same criticism and scrutiny of other presidents and in particular they want Obama to be exempt from the treatment Bush has has to endure.
But I am all for equal treatment and Obama NEEDS to be given the same treatment as his predecessors. Anything less is condescending.

4. xfahctor (5536) | 1 year ago | The saddest part about this, is there is still horrid, obscene racism in society. And because of the "cry wolf" syndrom, it is often ignored or worse, encouraged and perpetuated. Groups like th kkk and neo nazzi's want people to race bait, and cry wolf because it helps their agenda and sadly, people are all to willing by complacency to help out.

6. whiteheather39 (13431) | 1 year ago | Yes I do think eventually they will find their cries falling on deaf ears. My own personal observation of unfounded cries of racism seem, in the most part, to be from egoists of all races who believe that they are so special they should, as their due, receive instant gratification to all their needs, that only their opinion is the correct one and receive special treatment as they are of more importance than anyone else. Subsequently the race card is used for the wrong reasons.

MSV1313 (2243) | 1 year ago | I totally agree with your keen observation. The peopel you and I have had the misfortune to come across are pure narcissists and only use the false accusations of racism as an excuse to claim some sort of moral superiority when it in fact does just the opposite but they are too conceited to realize that. I also find it ironic that these people who exhibit latent ignorance when they claim everyone is a racist when no such evidence of racism exists in the same breath claim t be highly educated. Another irony about folks who like to brag about this degree or that degree is that their tirades are often poorly constructed and rife with spelling and grammar errors and a lack of coherent thought. I'm still laughing about a post I saw where somebody accusing racism said the innocent victim of his attack was feeling mad because a "black man will be in the oral office". Ha ha ha, I thought the "oral" office was strictly a Clinton thing!

| 7. LeopartAtTheSummit (1) | 1 year ago | One of the frustrating things about false racism for me, is that some races seem to think if you are a "minority" then you can't be racist. It was taught when I was in college, and unfortunately I wasn't mature enough to speak up and debate the issue. All races can be racist. Majority/minority doesn't mean a thing.

10. djmarion (3292) | 1 year ago | i have read that story when i was young and have come to like the message it tries to relay. our world is full of pretention and lies. people will do anything to take advantage of others. some will create stories just to fool good and kind-hearted people.
But out of these things i know that the truth will be revealed and the one who tries to fool people will eventually go down.
I'm glad you brought this topic up and I'm also glad to know that a lot of people are also noticing these fallacy.
