Make or buy a birthday cake?

I have always bought my birthday cakes we get the decorated ones like Spidermas, Disney Princess etc but now my son will be 13 in July and he dosen't care about those character cakes he would rather I make a home made cake and the money I save on the cake use to buy him presents with my daughter is 5 though and she still loves the character cakes.

Neither of my kids has ever had a birthday party, but when it comes to their birthday's I normally make the cake. Neither one of them really likes cake that much and I don't either, so it would be a waste of money to buy one.

when it came to a party with all my friends i know my mom use to buy one that was already made because she had so much other stuff to do for the party it was easier but when just my family was over for my birthday she made one since it was cheaper but did not have all the other preperations since it was not a party just a get together type thing.

I always make birthday cakes, I'm not that good at making birthday cakes. I would rather they remeber the attempts of me making them a cake and the icing that I'm not that good at than a shop cake. At least my cakes are full of love

I've purchased them a few times for my kids, but mostly I've made them. I usually do a round 2-layer one. The kids enjoy being the one to choose the flavor and frosting. They often help making it too.

My girls are both 'grown & flown' and I still make their cakes. I make my grandchildrens cakes too. I was very lucky to have grown up near my one aunt who was a cake decorator and did all the family cakes (tiered wedding cakes and all!) I learned lots about cake decorating, and I love to do it. The last birthday (for my one grandson) I made a cake that was a train. He's really into trains this year, so he thought that a great treat. When my girls were little and had friends over for their birthday parties, they'd usually want a doll cake. (For a doll cake you make a bundt cake and put a Barbie in the middle and then make a bouffant gown with the frosting.) I think that was their fav cake lol. Lots of their friends wanted the same cake for their birthday too. Saves a lot of money doing your own cakes!

I have been buying my kids cakes but only because I don't usually have time to make them. I'd rather make them though.

Celebrations nowadays are SO commercialized that I promised myself that no matter what, I would always bake my son's Birthday Cake. We have a very large extended family and holidays, birthdays, anniverseries, graduations ETC are always an excuse for us all to gather... Yeah, it's easier to buy prepared stuff, especially for alot of people, but I look at my little guy's special day differently... He was a miracle baby (four years to have him!) and it's the one thing (his cake) that I can put my effort into and the entire time to prepare it, I have private thoughts, memories, hopes and dreams for my baby!

Usually we buy our bday cake from many places . I like the ice cream mix ones sometimes and sometimes the sweeter the better . I really like cream cheese icing tho and usualy that has to be made. I once tried to make my dad a bday cake and well it was burnt and gooey and warm in the inside I am better at pre bake ones well the no bake LOL.
