We Don't Need That Microwave Popcorn! |
|
Think about it..microwave popcorn is an expensive way to buy and prepare an inexpensive treat. We're paying a lot extra for that special bag and a few artificial seasonings. We don't have to go back to the old popper (unless you want to), but here's a thought on how to do your popcorn, cheaper..and maybe much better:
All you do is take popcorn — say, 1/4 cup — and put it in a brown paper bag (preferably the large lunch bags sold in supermarkets ), then fold over the top a few times (some people recommend staples, but it seems the bags can catch fire that way and why risk it; the staple is unnecessary), then pop until the kernels stop, which is high heat for two minutes in many cases.
And, even a bit cheaper, and lots more creative....
Why bother with the bag? You can pop the popcorn right in a bowl, covered with a plate. Just need a closed environment so that the water inside the kernels turns to steam and pops. . .You can put flavorings and oils at the bottom of the bowl, or season afterwards. And there’s no waste!

1. philjas (925) | 1 year ago | First of all DO NOT use staples, it will most likely cause a fire. Years ago I tried to do my own microwave popcorn and I used a twist tie - I forgot that have metal inside of them and I had a big fire in my microwave!
The one thing that is advantageous about microwave popcorn is if you like a lot of butter, like movie theater butter, prepackaged microwave popcorn is absolutely the best way to get it. I remember the old days of Jiffy Pop and hot air popper. Popping the corn is easy, the hard part is getting it buttered enough and evenly. Butter flavored microwave popcorn eliminates that problem.

2. Sheepie (2561) | 1 year ago | Wow, that's all? You can still put it in the microwave? Wow. We do have a popper though, however we don't use it nearly enough! It's hard to find good popping corn, though. I think using real butter tastes so much better than that yellow stuff. It melts the popcorn, but it's still very good.

janeives43 (980) | 1 year ago | I agree with you..real butter tastes much better; and this way, you can do just that.,,add the seasonings you want. I haven't had much trouble finding good popping corn..just look around some specialty gourmet shops.

3. GardenGerty (20190) | 1 year ago | I have a microwave corn popper or two that I bought at yard sales. I agree, why mess with the chemicals and the repackaging and the excess oil. You can pop it dry and them use butter spray on it and other seasonings. It is much healthier and of course less expensive. Lots of things are over processed and over packaged.

janeives43 (980) | 1 year ago | Now that you mention it, I have one of those poppers around here somewhere..time to find it. That butter spray is tasty and you can add spices or salts that you like.

4. wrangel15 (838) | 1 year ago | During special occasions or gatherings, we also prepare pop corns cooked by the microwave. The pop corns are packed closed in a paper bag already. We will just put it in the microwave and wait for a few minutes. We would just have to set the exact time to avoid having burned pop corns.

5. peavey (3729) | 1 year ago | I have never bought microwave popcorn! I've eaten it a few times, but to me, it's tasteless, that's the reason they have to put on all the fake flavors. Real popcorn, popped with heat, has a flavor that only needs salt. That's the way I like it.

janeives43 (980) | 1 year ago | That's the way most of us really like it, too; though I'll take some melted butter as well. It's surprising how frequently people buy the microwaveable boxes in the store, when the real thing is so much better, and cheaper.

6. happythoughts (2120) | 1 year ago | Wow. I didnt even know you could do that. I thought that you needed the oils to make it pop. That sounds a lot healthier too. I have been looking for my air popper for a while now. Its been lost since I put my house up on the market. This is a great alternative. Thanks.
