Cinnamon Dough Christmas Ornaments..Non edible  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 89/100. janeives43 (979) 4 years ago

These dough ornaments are easy to make, and they're great for old fashioned Christmas Tree Ornaments or special package decorations. As the children grow older, they can help to shape their own..store with protective bubblewrap and they'll last a long time.

1-1/2 cups ground cinnamon
1 cup applesauce
2/3 cup white school glue (such as Elmer’s)
flour
rolling pin
cookie cutters
ribbon
wax paper
drying rack
tassels
gift wrapped box
drinking straw
tooth picks

Steps:

Mix cinnamon, applesauce and glue together in a bowl.

Remove the mixture from the bowl and knead it with your hands until it forms a firm clay.

Let the cinnamon clay sit for about 30 minutes.

Dust your rolling pin, hands, or working surface with cinnamon, or use wax paper as a working surface.

Roll out cinnamon clay with a rolling pin to approximately 1/4- to 1/8-inch thick.

Cut out desired shapes with cookie cutters (gingerbread men, stars, snowflakes). To hang the cinnamon clay ornament shape, use a straw to cut out a hole near the top and bottom of the shape. For garlands, create holes on the sides of the shape with a straw too.

Place shapes on a non-stick cooling rack or wax paper. Turn the clay over occasionally to dry evenly and flat.

Dry shapes for approximately five days. When dried, insert a ribbon through the hole of the cinnamon clay ornaments for hanging on a tree or adding to a package. Tassels may be added to the bottom for extra decoration. To make a garland, attach shapes together in a row with ribbon.

Oh, I know this isn't edible but it sure sounds good. I may have to try it out, I like having old fashioned ornaments on my tree. Especially home made things. I'll save this recipe :)

I hope you enjoy making these as much as my family does!

In my experience the thicker ones are better. You can even paint on them with craft paint once they are dry. I bet I have some up in the attic. Hmmm. Might be fun to do this year.

I think you're right about thickness, Gerty..they're probably less fragile that way. They are lots of fun to make!

I have also made these, and instead of letting the air dry, we put them in the oven on a very low temperature to help them dry. This really enhanced the smell, and the aroma of cinnamon in the house was lovely.

That's a wonderful idea. Cinnamon aroma wafting thru a house is the best of the spicy smells, I think.

My daughter made these last year in church and they came out really cute. I was thinking about making them with my daycare kids, so thanks for the recipe.
Do you know if there is a way to make the dough ahead of time and keep it soft, or do you have to make the dough and then cut out right away?

myLot reputation of 89/100. janeives43 (979)  4 years ago

This would be a great project for the daycare children. I have never made the dough ahead of time, so I'm not sure how long it would last, tightly covered. You could make the shapes at home and then let the children paint or decorate them in class.

I have seen these places but I had never really thought about how they were made. Unfortunately, I do not have kids, or work with kids and do not have a Tree so I can think about making these, but this does sound like something Fun and easy to do. Thanks for sharing this idea with us all.

I used to make these along with flour dough ornaments every year. and gave man of them away as gifts. I used to buy new cookie cutter shapes just so I would have new designs for these ornaments. I used to have a dehydrator and used that to dry the ornaments. It was a lot of fun to make these and decorate them with my daughter.

myLot reputation of 89/100. janeives43 (979)  4 years ago

A dehydrator would be a wonderful way to dry cookie ornaments! If I were making as many as I used to when the kids were little, I might think of investing in one. They are lots of fun, aren't they?

They were a lot of fun to make and I may have to make them again this year. The cinnamon ones smell really good, and I have some grandchildren who might enjoy making them.

My sons class made those last year. The teacher sent a note home asking parents to send in either cinnamon or applesauce to help cover the cost of making them. I sent in 2 jars of applesauce and 2 jars of cinnamon.
