You can spend a fortune on Christmas wrapping paper and bows! I was behind a lady with my shopping cart at Walmart, last night. All she had in her cart were bags of ready made stick on bows, rolls of Christmas wrapping paper, rolls of curling ribbon and some of those rolls of stick on cards for the gifts. She didn't seem to have a lot of stuff; one reason why I got behind her in line, but her total came to $67.31. I couldn't believe it! Can you imagine what you could buy for $67.31?

Please don't get me wrong, I save those ready made bows from packages given to my family. If there's a nice piece of Christmas paper that survives being unwrapped in one piece, I put it away. And I do buy those rolls of curling ribbon. I've found, however, that with a little creativity and much less money, you can individualize those packages you're wrapping..and it's fun!

Don’t spend a fortune on gift wrap this year! Here are some thrifty alternatives:
Red, green or holiday fabric from the clearance section at your local fabric store.
Tie with a spool of inexpensive ribbon. (This can be used over and over again.)
Use brown paper shopping bags for a natural look.
Use your child’s artwork to wrap smaller gifts.
Gift bags from the dollar store in solid colors like red, silver and green that can be reused
for other occasions.
White trash bags work well for large gifts.
Use craft scissors to cut designs from holiday cards to use as gift tags.
Elegant cigar boxes make a great custom gift box when you put a bow on top.

While we're talking thrift, here, I'd like to suggest after Christmas shopping, for up to 75% off on all of those items my Walmart friend had in her shopping cart. If you don't want or don't have time for the home made look, you can buy the prepared stuff ahead of time, for much less..Don't forget to include Christmas cards to this list of post holiday bargains.

I am all about frugal shopping an dbuying a head of time or when on clearance. However I have a husband who tends to let money burn a whole in his pocket. So it is like I have to buy it when I see it. Or wait and pray he will let me buy it later. Don't get me wrong he is getting better at learning. He even checks the prices to get the cheaper things now. he has come along way from when I first met him in believing you have to buy expensive things in order to get quality and such. But he sure has a long way to go. He doesn't know the first thing about being crafty.

I don't think most men have the frugality gene, Rusty. It takes a lot of time to get thru to most on this subject, but it sounds like your hubby is getting there slowly.

As a male I have to say that I am miserable when it comes to money. It is partly the way I was bought up but I became even more frugal when my ex-wife and I separated. I suddenly found that the same income which used to keep our home going was not nearly enough when I suddenly had to pay child support and have a separate place to live.

So I was already into the habit of watching where my money went when I met the lady who is my partner. When we set up home together we found it was rather expensve although she was good at budgeting anyway. She too had been married and had to bring up her children without any financial support from their father, so she was well versed in getting the best she could from limited funds.

Your husband will learn too rusty and if you are already into budgeting, then you have a head start.

Thank you. Yes, my husband has come along way. I think he realizes what I am saying but you know...has to do it at his own pace type thing.
I once was talking to some older ladies. One mention to the other how she had such a good husband and such to help her do things. Plus she wanted to know how she done it. The first lady looked at her and said "it has taken 15 years of training and I am not done yet." lol I couldn't hold my laughter in. The situation was to funny.

Some interesting suggestions here and I will pass them on to my partner. I am fairly frugal when it comes to money and admit that it was bought on by necessity when my ex-wife and I seoparated. Suddenly the whole world changed, at least for me financially, as I has to find somewhere else to live plus pay maintenance for my children who were still young. Then I met my partner and we started a new life together so saving money on any way that we could was a necessity.

My partner is very craft orientated and makes many of these things. Gift cards are made from cards that we receive in previous years which she cuts around and makes all fancy. Wrapping paper is what we save that is still good from the previous year plus we stock up when we see it on special anywhere. When the grandchildren visit we give them some paints and butcher's paper (plain white paper in big sheets) which they decorate.

Old boxes in good condition can be covered with the artwork or some of the pictures off old birthday or Christmas cards. It is hard to imagine sopending that amount of money on wrapping paper and bits when most of it will no doubt get thrown away. I am not eally sure how much we spend on wrapping paper etc but doubt it would cost us even $10 a year. That amount would include the paints and glue we do have to buy.

Thanks for the tips as I am sure my partner will appreciate them.

I hope you and your partner find some of these tips useful, oldboy. If your spending for wrapping paper, etc. is around $10 yearly, you're already probably following these suggestions and your partner has a few more of her own. Everything is so costly these days, that I was just blown away when I saw someone spending over $60 for wrapping materials!
