Walmart employee trampled..have any of you experienced this today? |
|
Or something like it? This is unbelievable, like something you read in a horror book!
"A Wal-Mart employee in suburban New York was trampled to death by a crush of shoppers who tore down the front doors and thronged into the store early Friday morning, turning the annual rite of post-Thanksgiving bargain hunting into a Hobbesian frenzy."
They even pushed and jostled rescue workers trying to give the man CPR and parents had to grab their kids (why would someone have a kid out at that hour?!) to keep the crowd from trampling them.
This is horrible. How can people behave this way? I went out to drive around today because I'd never been out on Black Friday and the traffic was awful, there were no parking spots anywhere and even the groceries were crowded.
How was shopping for you today, if you went?

1. AmandaBarnhart (385) | 1 year ago | I've never been out on black friday or shopping for that matter. I think what happened is horrible and I hope those people feel very ashamed while they go up to the register to get their gift and ask themselves.. was this purchase really worth that poor persons life? Such a shame in what our society has turned into, so despicable and unbelievable. Yet I can say that it doesn't surprise me I guess that people are so self absorb in what they need that they dont' take the time to help anyone up.

pau_79 (507) | 1 year ago | Thats terrible-I think nothing is worth trampling a salesman..but we can never tell how people react in any given situation -makes working in shops risky if this is the case.
I wonder who will be held responsible for the death-really bad esp for the family

2. Chevee (3599) | 1 year ago | I tried to tell them this in another discussion I started on The After Thanksgiving Day sale. Some of the responders said they had never heard of this, fighting pushing and shoving. I told them no way was I getting out in that mess of shoppers and I didn't.

3. grammasnook (1259) | 1 year ago | I have heard stories like this before and it is outrageous that people would just stampede a person. No deal is worth a life. I believe that these types of sales should be outlawed and not permitted. I went one year and the woman behind me grabbed something out of my hand, I looked at her and said well if you want it that bed then take it. I watched people get into a fist fight. The ignorance is unbelievable. Everyone of those shoppers are as guilty as the next. How can people just ignore someone on the floor? Like I said this should be stopped no more black friday events! They would be smart to just send out a regular flyer and suprise the public with the black friday specials.

4. highflyingxangel (8940) | 1 year ago | I think the crowd that we were in today was one of the better crowds that we've been in. We went shopping at a Walmart and I didn't get pushed, or shoved and people weren't madly grabbing things like they have in year's past. People were actually pretty civil. People were being nice and actually helping out people out. I did experience one woman that was pretty snobby and didn't care for anyone else except for a woman that I was helping out that had her baby with her. That's not uncommon for some people though so I'm not that surprised that one person had to ruin the whole thing.
There was plenty of time to everything that we wanted. They still had just about everything left so it really wasn't a bad time today. Not for us anyway.

highflyingxangel (8940) | 1 year ago | It certainly is nice hearing good stories for once. I mean, you have that poor worker that was trampled at Walmart and then the two people that were shot and killed at a Toys R Us in California. It's just terrible. It's not the end of the world if you don't get what you are looking for. It really isn't.

5. Thoroughrob (7831) | 1 year ago | I did not go, but have other years and people just are not nice. You would think they are after the last bit of food to feed their families. I go out and try to find things, if I get them fine, if I don't fine.

dragon54u (9475) | 1 year ago | Even though I didn't shop, I saw the crowds and the traffic and I don't think I'll ever shop the day after Thanksgiving!
I thought it was time to change my routine but I'll keep my Friday quiet from now on. You have a good attitude, more people should feel that way!

7. Ithink (1481) | 1 year ago | This makes me sick, that people could put material things before a life. Even if he had only been injured that would have been bad enough. I found and read the story and the fact that people had the nerve to get mad and yell when asked to leave when they closed the store is so sick!
I really hope the ones that did this and the ones that just stepped over him have a great holiday knowing that they killed someone for a few bucks. What are some people thinking??
I feel sorry for the ones that tried so hard to get to him to help him too. They had to feel helpless and will probably have nightmares of this for a long time to come. Where it is the ones that pushed and shoved all for a good deal that Im hoping has the nightmares.

dragon54u (9475) | 1 year ago | I didn't know there was trouble when the store closed, that's awful.
We have become such a consumer society and put such emphasis on material goods that this was bound to happen, or something like it. People define themselves by their material goods, not their characters. We've lost something in this country that I hope we can get back but we've let it happen. The media tell us we're not cool if we don't have this dress or that phone or drive that kind of car and we believe them.
It's pathetic. It's time for this nation to take a good hard look at itself.

8. marcialoyd (1073) | 1 year ago | That poor guys family. I feel awful for them. I believe that something should be done to outlaw these sales that create such a frenzy every year. Just about every year you hear of people getting hurt if not killed. It is not worth it. I refuse to go out into that mob myself. I was still home tucked away in bed.

9. di1159 (1529) | 1 year ago | We went out to a mall Thanksgiving night which opened at 12:00 a.m. I figured it wouldn't be as crowded as the early morning specials. I was wrong. Sawgrass Mills is an outlet mall and is one of the larger malls in the South Florida area. To get off the turnpike exit there was a 2 mile line of cars just to get to the exit. We got past that, but inside the mall, it was impossible to walk. There was wall to wall people pushing and shoving, if you did manage to get into a store and want to buy something, there was like 1 clerk and a line which snaked throughout the store. Needless to say, I left. I came home and started ordering presents online. I'll wait for the delivery and most places had free or reduced shipping. I'll never do the Black Friday thing again.

dragon54u (9475) | 1 year ago | I wonder why people do that? That must have been why I saw people standing outside one store with unbagged stuff and there were guards with them. No way would I do that, no matter how much money I would save!
I think we should find a way to take the emphasis off presents at Christmas. But business would never put up with it.

10. tammytwo (2798) | 1 year ago | I went out at 5 am to our local Wal-MArt and I believe people were ruder than ever this year. I have been shopping for the past three years on Black Friday and never experienced the rudeness that I did today. Just because the economy is bad doesn't give people the right to act so rude.

dragon54u (9475) | 1 year ago | I don't think they know what else to do besides be rude, they're so frustrated and worried. But why are people spending money right now when they may need it for food in a few weeks or a month, maybe they'll be losing their job? I think that's why they're rude, they don't know how to handle this situation. Or maybe they're just jerks anyway, you never know.
I'll never even drive around to look at the activity anymore. It was really insane.
