How Green is Your Kitchen? | | | | I was reading an article on simple ways we can save, reuse and recycle in our kitchen, without making major changes in our lifestyles. Here are a few good ideas, to help start out easily: Many people think that using a dishwasher wastes a lot of water. This is not true, if you wait to run your washer when it's completely full. Handwashing dishes uses a steady stream of water, both to wash and then rinse. This all adds up, especially if you're like me and wash every time you have a few used items in the sink. If you remember to save up and do your dishwashing only when your appliance is full, and turn off the heat-drying option, you will save water, energy, and ultimately, money. Remember to avoid throwing greases down your drain. You could end up with an expensive visit from your plumber; but grease in drains makes it extremely difficult for sewage treatment facilities to do their job properly. Recycling is an obvious choice, but many of us don't realize how many recyleables there are in our kitchen. Empty cans, bottles, glass jars and containers..all these can be placed in a separate recycling bin, carried to your curb for trash pickup, or taken to your nearest recycling center. Compost your food scraps. Many things are compostable and will make your garden a healthier place in the coming year. You can make your own compost pile at home, or purchase a composter. If you are an organic coffee drinker, Wikipedia has many useful ideas for using those coffee grounds. None of these ideas are earthshattering or new, but every little bit helps. If you fall into the pattern of doing these things on a daily basis, it will soon become habit...and you'll be well on your way to a greener kitchen. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | I am an enthusiastic environmentalist, so I am already practicing what you read about in the article. However, I do not have a dishwasher over here, so I am not wasting the water in such way. But during those days when I was on relocation to U.S., the leased apartment does have a dishwasher. I found that it's not efficient to clean the dish sometimes, especially after cooking oily food. I still need to do final wash after retrieving the pans and plates from the dish washer. But it's great for people who are busy and do not have much time washing their dish. I always dump the leftover in the dish and throw it into the dustbin. Therefore, it won't clog my basin pipe. Sometimes, I will pack the oily liquid (curry or soup) into plastic bag and throw it into dust bin, instead of pouring it into the basin. This could avoid further polluting the water. I usually avoid cooking over what I could eat, and try my best to finish all the food, in order to minimize the leftover (less rubbish). Besides, I will wipe the oily dish with old newspaper to reduce the oil substance being flushed down into the drain too. We need to take care of our waste water, because it flows into the ocean. It will come back to us, because we are eating sea food, which could be affected by polluted sea water. I will recycle all metal cans, glass bottles and paper box. This could encourage reusing the recyclable resource and reduce the CO2 produced due to less manufacturing needed to produce more of these resource. This eventually will help in decreasing the global warming effect. Actually, the best way to help is, be thrifty always, avoid wasting habit, consume less and shop smartly. | | | | | | | janeives43 (979)

| | You are most welcome and thanks for the compliments. I have been trying to convince my friend to be environmental friendly, but they are obstinate to do so. Actually they do not have any idea of how bad our environment is going to be now and in the near future. They take the environmental issue for granted. They thought they can leave it to the government to worry about it. Actually, it could help a lot and make a big difference if everyone of us can contribute a on our part well. It's a pity that even oir government is not green as well. Most of their developement policies are destructive to our environment too! | | | | | | | Best Dishwasher Overall Our experts have done the research so you don't have to! www.Bestcovery.com | add comment | | | |
